I'm a huge movie fan and I assume many of you are as well. I was just interested in what people's favorite movies are (make a short list), and if you have a really obscure movie that you'd like to share, please do! I'm always up for hearing about something interesting.

Some of my personal favorite directors/films/genres:
1)Quentin Tarantino movies
2)Sergio Leone (spaghetti westerns)
3)Akira Kurosawa
4)Dario Argento + George Romero
5)Stanley Kubrick
6)Peter Jackson (including his early horror stuff)
7)Tim Burton
8)Bruce Lee movies
9)Gangster genre (Scarface, Goodfellas, Casino, etc..)
10)Roman Polanski
11)Oliver Stone
12)Bruce Campbell movies (they are all great!)
13)El Mariachi/Desperado series of films (robert rodriguez)

Anyway, hope to hear some good recommendations!

Shrek, Shrek 2, and Mononoke Hime. Not a great film watcher, I am, but I recommend those anyway. The first two 'cause they're funny and not offensive (hurray, I needed some of that) and the last one 'cause it's cool. Anime though, so everyone else here prolly hates it biggrin.gif

The Shawshank Redemption. It's one of those movies that when I come across it on TV, I'll end up watching it until it's over. I've done this with the movie probably 10+ times by now. Yojimbo by Kurosawa is quite nice as well.
Fain2004-11-03 02:54:08
Yeah, I'm a big fan of Yojimbo.. and of course it was remade by Sergio Leone as A Fistfull of Dollars.

1. Boondock Saints
2. Any Tarantino movie
3. We Were Soldiers
4. Patton
5. Gangster movies
6. Last Samurai - I was surprised.
7. The WHole 10 Yards, again, sequels usually are never funny.
8. The classic Godzillas, those are sweet smile.gif
9. The original The Punisher.
10. Pirates of the Carribean, who'd guess a movie with Johnny Depp could be good?
Fain2004-11-03 03:26:17
I suspected you were a Boondocks fan Silvanus smile.gif

I liked Billy Connolly in both Boondocks and Last Samurai.. looking forward to the Boondocks sequel.

Wasn't it obvious? I mean.. look at my Avatar. All Saints Day is going to be amazing though, I believe one of the brothers was in Blade 2 (Maybe, I only saw little parts, I forgot which one).

Nine Queens is great, its a South american film and was remade in the U.S recently. Its a great con movie. definitly worth finding in your local blockbuster.
Ihsahn2004-11-03 03:52:45
They need to make a good movie/miniseries adaptation of a James Clavell book. Shogun's miniseries didn't cut it, not even a little. And Dirk Struan has such movie hero potential!

I highly approve of Gattaca, Fight Club, Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, and any honestly, unintentionally hilarious horror movie. As for intentionally hilarious? Well, let's just say that most of them aren't exactly the next Dead Alive.
Unknown2004-11-03 04:52:28
Wow, if I wasn't already a citizen a Magnagora, I would switch just on the basis of your list, especially regarding George Romero, Bruce Campbell and Tim Burton. If you can't tell, I'm a fairly big fan of horror/B-movies. Some of my favorites from this category are:

1) The Evil Dead Series (Hilarious, especially when Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell stopped trying to film a serious horror flick)

2) Death Race 2000 (An early Sylvester Stallone movie, along with David Carradine. One of those movies which would have been really good except it tried to have a moral lesson, completely unnecessary in my opinion.

3) Riki-O (A Japanese film that has some of the goriest, unrealistic fighting out there. If some of you remember the old intro to "5-questions" when Craig Kilborn ran The Daily Show, the man bloating up and then exploding came from this movie)

4) Starry Night (A film where Vincent Van Gogh comes back to life in California in the 90's. He decides that since he never sold any of his art when alive, he technically still owned them and tries to steal them back from those who own them now. Two best parts of the movie: 1-The movie's in English, yet it's overdubbed in...english! 2-You will be suprised at how many versions of "Starry, starry, night" can be fit into one movie.

That's all I can think of right now, probably will post more later. Oh, and if you haven't read Bruce Campbell's autobiography, "If Chins Could Kill, Confessions of a B-Movie Actor," you should because it's hilarious.

See you in Lusternia!

Well, my favorite movies are:

The Nightmare Before Christmas---my all time favorite there
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
The Pianist---I really love this movie...Adrian Brody did really well and they said that he sold his car and apartment for a month to get in touch with the feeling of loss for this movie.
---laugh all you want at this one, I like it anyway---That Thing You Do
Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder----that movie just cracks me up for some reason.

If you can't tell, I'm a fairly big fan of horror/B-movies.

If you love zombie/horror movies, check out some of the stuff coming from Asia:
1) Versus (samurai yakuzas vs zombies! a winning combination)
2) The Eye (really creepy)
3) Ringu (which The Ring was stolen from.. the japanese version is far better)

Riki-O! is classic. (aka The Story of Ricky) It had some of the most outlandish stuff I've ever seen in a martial arts movie. I think it was rated the best movie to watch while intoxicated.

I'll be definitely looking into some of these suggestions I haven't heard of though, thanks! Keep em coming, and I'll try to drop some new recommendations as well. biggrin.gif

If you havn't seen it yet, go out and rent, or buy, or ebay, Donnie Darko.
It's a great movie and it has a great sound track. Got one of the girls from that new 'Saved!' as well as from My Life as a House (also a must see!)
It also has Jake.. Gillinhal? umm.. yeah, I dunno how to spell his last name. Anyway, great movie, go see it!

Oh! Also......I recommend the ORIGINAL Animated version of the Hobbit....you'll know it if you find it. For its time period, the animation is phenomenal and the songs get stuck in your head. The same people who did it also did a version of The Lord of the Rings that is cool as well *not the one with real people that were poorly drawn over*
Asarnil2004-11-04 17:12:52
Just off the top of my head:
Road Trip, Spaceballs, Equilibrium, The Dirty Dozen, Loaded Weapon, Hot Shots, The Punisher (for some reason I really liked this comic book adaption), Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, The Hebrew Hammer, School of Rock, The Last Samurai, Zatoichi, Hero, Fight Club, American History X, Ju-On (the Japanese version of The Grudge and it is way scarier), Saw (awesome Aussie flick even if they did cut like 8 seconds out of the "saw" scene), Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Perfect Blue, Ghost In The Shell, Akira
Unknown2004-11-04 17:19:07
American History X is a really good movie....if you like it, check out the movie Believer as well.
Carline2004-11-04 18:19:02
let's see ...
Deer hunter
Heat
Alien, the original movie
Clockwork Orange
Breaking the waves ... not a feel good movie tho but great for it's genre
Lord of the Rings .. all 3 that were last made ..

Silvanus has a remarkably similar Top 3 to mine (actually watched Boondock Saints and We Were Soldiers today)

Not really a true movie but worth watching regardless, is this strange pseudo mini-series movie thing I got from the states called The 10th Kingdom. Dunno if anyone's seen it but its pretty spiffy, though it's a good six hours long.

My all time MOST favourite movie, which I subject almost everyone who crosses my path to, is this obscure 80's cartoon movie called "Wizards". It's not anime, so people might think it's a tad dodgey, but with a theme of nazi influenced mutants and chaos warriors toting machine guns and riding tanks vs elves and faeries, its a surefire winner laugh.gif . Problem is no one I've ever met has seen it until I show them the movie, so if anyone owns it or has seen it, please say so so that I don't feel like I own the last remaining copy in existance. unsure.gif

That's about the only new stuff I can add, since I'd merely be repeating what most people have already said, though I'm surprised no one has mentioned "vintage" old movies like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Willow, The Princess Bride and Legend (either that or I'm just having flashbacks to my childhood) or the Conan movies (comics are better, but meh)
Unknown2004-11-05 14:35:36
The Dark Crystal rocks *sagenod*
