IRE #5!

Back to The Real World.

Hmm! Looks like IRE's looking for coders for their 5th MUD. I wonder how long that's going to take. In any case, y'all better stay here or I'll have to restrain you and lock you in a room with a permanently open Lusternia ZMUD client or something. And nothing else. Muaha.

Anyway, I just wondered what kind of setting this one's going to be? It was described as based on Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia world, but I have NO idea what that's about. Which makes me wonder, what were the main influences You guys had for Lusternia anyway? All idle curiosity. happy.gif

If it is based on Feist, it should be incredibly cool. He created what is, in my opinion, an incredibly detailed world and a lot of -really- interesting books.

Of course, it could just be the setting, or it could be the way magic works (greater path and lesser path, one being the more 'wizardly' things and one being more 'sorceror/witches' to speak in D&D sort of terms) or it could be in the way the gods work through avatars and people rarely, if ever, see a god, or it could be.. ok, I'll stop.

I don't know how many different spins you can put on a high fantasy game without getting into the 'played one, played them all' syndome.

Honestly, I'd love to see some solid cyberpunk gliding on a Rapture engine.

Maybe that will be #11.

Ooo, the "classic wizard"? Anyway, I'm not nearly as interested in the Feist game as I was for Lusternia. We shall see, though.

I was searching up on Google about Midkemia and Raymond Feist, and it looks like it is a book as well as a game, though, I am not sure which type of game.

Here is a quote by Raymond Feist (I think) which I found at www.raymondfeistbooks.com:

QUOTE
Midkemia is a virtual world created by a bunch of UC San Diego grad school buddies 28 years ago. We did it for fun, as a pastime. This was around the time that Dungeons & Dragons was all the rage. But D & D was underdeveloped for our tastes; we decided to draw on our knowledge of medieval history and our love of fantasy to build a fully realized gameworld: Midkemia. We made up characters, countries, political alliances and disputes, a system of magic, a pantheon of gods -- a wonderful, magical place that didn't exist anywhere except in our heads. We brought it to life when we got together on a regular basis (every Thursday night for a while, then Friday nights), mastering games or playing characters. Game players understand this sort of world-building, but for a lot of people it may seem like a weird thing to do. And maybe it is -- but in my opinion it's no more weird than driving buckets of golfballs in the rain, collecting every pressing of every LP the Beatles ever made, or buying every stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Later, my friend Steve Abrams suggested that I tell the story of how Greater Path Magic (Don't know what that is? Read the books!) came to Midkemia; from that came my first novel Magician, published in 1982. In order not to conflict with the gameworld we'd created, I set Magician, the first of my Riftwar novels, 500 years before our game. I write the history to the Midkemia the Friday Nighters created.

What we never imagined all those years ago was that this world would take on a life of its own beyond anything we could have imagined; that Midkemia would find its way into homes all around the world -- not just our student apartments. I hadn't begun writing back then, and the possibility of a computer game was nil since the personal computer didn't yet exist. We created Midkemia solely for the sake of fun.

The Rift War Saga (The name of the series featuring Midkemia.) is a cut above your usual military/sword& sorcery fantasy. It features well developed characters for each generation of storyline wthin the different series in the Saga. Best of all Feist doesn't pull punches. He's not afraid to kill off characters which gives more incentive to be interested in the plot. I remember first reading Magician when I was 12 or 13.

The Midkemia books that I've read are excellent, I'd highly recommend them (Haven't read all of them, but I have read a few). The game, Betrayal at Krondor, is pretty cool too (Especially since I played it before reading the books, then read the books, then played it again and went "whoa" cause I knew who some of the characters were that I hadn't known before biggrin.gif). It's a sort of RPG, but it's not like Diablo or anything, it's first person and it has a lot of riddles and turn based combat. Really oooooold graphics, looks like one of the first attempts at 3D type stuff. But cool, you can go wandering around the countryside like Morrowind if you want, and do all random quests and things... smile.gif

Can't wait to see the IRE version! I was excited when I first heard that they'd bought the rights, it's good to know that something is being done with them...

Beat 'Betrayal at Krondor' in '96 (it came out in '93, but I was always behind the times. Still wanting to see Return to Krondor, as I wasn't a huge fan of Betrayal at Antara).

If anyone knows the site of one of these games, could they please post the address?
Shiri2004-12-08 20:58:12
Wait, wait, the Magician was one of these books? Meh. Wasn't a great fan of the timeline changing. It sort of depersonalised the whole thing, from my perspective. Ah well, to each his/her own!

Never heard of Midkemia, but it sounds good.

Needless to say, Lusternia's only just been introducted, therefore I'm so not interested. ¬_¬

Don't forget Persistent Realms. They're making a game on the Rapture engine - can't remember the name right now - and what i've seen looks pretty good. The CTO is Anatole from Imperian, if any of you remember him, and the rest of the company are IRE gamers as well.
Unknown2004-12-09 16:48:12
Persistant Realms? That really their name?
Slythe2004-12-10 04:33:51
Hmm... I think IRE should come up with a futuristic/space age thing. Or something. >.>
Hazar2004-12-10 05:29:47
I believe so.

For many old abandonware pc games:
www.oldgames.nu
or
www.the-underdogs.org/

I think you might find those games there.

I had a look at their forums, and it's called Ilyrias. And by the looks of it, it looks good. I can't find out when it's going to be released abouts, though.
