Pink Floyd!

Just thought I'd rant about how amazing Pink Floyd is. I've divided this into sections

**********************REMEMBER, THESE ARE MY PERSONAL OPINIONS******************

WHO IS PINK FLOYD FOR?

They have something for almost everyone!

Into soft jazzy music? Us and Them!

Into blues? Ummm....Stay.

Into rock? Almost everything they've done biggrin.gif.

Into soft rock? Coming Back to Life, Childhood's End, pretty much the whole Obscured by Cloud album.

Into phsychadelia (sp?)? Piper at the Gates of Dawn, although this is the only Pink Floyd album I don't listen to (I even listen to A Momentary Lapse of Reason -SOMETIMES-). Lack of David Gilmour biggrin.gif. I appreciate all Syd's done for the band, but David Gilmour is my idol.

Hard rock? Young Lust, Time (kinda)

Instrumentals? One of These Days, Echoes (though it has a few mintues of singing, but the song is 22 minutes long, so most of it is instrumental), Any Colour You Like, Marooned.

Rock-pop? Money, Learning to Fly.

Extremely awesometistic guitar solos? A LOT of songs, argueably the best is the outro solo for Comfortably Numb on the live album PULSE (5 minutes of hardcore guitar solo, baby), although Time comes in very close for me.

Metal? Damnit, nothing here.

Songs that are heavily depressing and can bring a tear to your eye when you listen to them? The Final Cut (the whole album, minus Not Now John) *NOTE* This is NOTHING like the rest of Pink Floyd works.

I don't know where Wish You Were Here falls under, but it's one of the best songs I have ever heard.

WHY IS PINK FLOYD COOL?

One of the most influental bands of all time
About the same success as the Beatles (record sales-wise)
Nick Mason has one the best car collections in the world
One of their concerts was the most watched concert ever
They have AMAZING light shows
David Gilmour (!!!!)
Dark Side of the Moon stayed on the US charts for top-selling albums for 741 weeks in a row, the longest (obviously) of ANY album ever in existance. This is over 13 years, by the way.
David Gilmour owns the serial numbered #0001 Fender Stratocaster, and had the pickguard made of gold.
David Gilmour is the main reason so many people showed up for the 50th anniversery Stratocaster concert.
David Gilmour has been knighted by the Queen of England for donating a lot of money to charity.
Roger Waters donated all the money raised from one of his concerts (it wasn't with Pink Floyd though) to charity.
Naomi Watts's father, Peter Watts (I think that was his name) did something for Pink Floyd on tour (I think he was a roadie biggrin.gif, or maybe a light technician).
Dark Side of the Moon and the Wizard of Oz play in near-perfect synchronization.
They are in the rock-and-roll Hall of Fame.
Many more reasons I can't think of off the top of my head.

WHY PINK FLOYD IS KIND OF NOT COOL? (Note the KIND OF)

Only one band member has been in the band throughout all of it's history. I'll explain.

Original Pink Floyd band: Syd Barret (guitar), Nick Mason (drums), Richard Wright (keyboards), Roger Waters (bass).
Pink Floyd shortly after: the same, except Syd Barret was replaced with David Gilmour.
Later on, Richard Wright was kicked out of the band by Roger Waters, but was re-inducted by David Gilmour shortly after.
Roger Waters left the band after producing The Final Cut, due to ego problems.

Syd Barret went insane from LSD abuse. Poor guy crying.gif.
The Final Cut is the most depressing thing anyone will ever hear.
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a piece of crap.
They have a song called Up the Khyber.

MY TOP 5 FAVOURITE PINK FLOYD SONGS

Wish You Were Here <---- absolutely beautiful song, powerful lyrics, the song that got me into Pink Floyd
Time <---- beautiful rock singing, awesome solo
Comfortably Numb <---- beautiful singing, amazingly awesome outro
Shine on You Crazy Diamond (the first parts, I forget what numbers they've been dubbed nowadays, since the album I own is extremely old, and just calls them part 1 and 2)
Echoes <---- amazing epic

MY TOP 5 FAVOURITE PINK FLOYD ALBUMS

Wish You Were Here <---- Shine on You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here, 'nuff said.
Dark Side of the Moon <---- Every song on this album is awesome.
The Wall <---- Perhaps their most famous album, a lot of awesome songs on here. However, there are a lot of crappy songs too, so it's not as solid and gets a lower place.
Animals <---- Gogo anti-everything.
PULSE <---- Not really a valid choice, since it's just live versions of all their songs, but I love all the guitar improvisation they did in this.

I WANT TO GET INTO PINK FLOYD BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT SONGS TO LISTEN TO OMG HELP ME PLEASE

WISH YOU WERE HERE
Comfortably Numb
Time
Another Brick in the Wall part 2 (More commonly known as the "We don't need no education" song).
Childhood's End
Echoes
Shine on You Crazy Diamond
High Hopes
Marooned

BANDS/PEOPLE THAT COME CLOSE TO PINK FLOYD

Eric Clapton, all of his solo works, Cream, and Derek and the Dominoes. Haven't heard his works with The Yardbirds or that other band.
The Who
Radiohead

BANDS THAT SUCK AND WHY

Blink 182. Well, I suppose they might be good for people into the Punk genre, but I'm not, and I don't like their music.
Sum41. Same reason.
Simple Plan. TWENTY YEAR OLDS SINGING ABOUT HOW MEAN THEIR DADS ARE AND RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME. Did I mention they sound like crap?
Some band I can't remember, but Sid Vicious is in it. They only suck cause they hate Pink Floyd (blasphemy!)

I'm done for now, I was bored and listening to Pink Floyd.

Relics was a high point but Syd Barret left and recorded the groundbreaking and under-appreciated 'Effervessing Elephant'.

I once recited the whole of the Wall, word perfect and in album song order, after downing a bottle of Southern Comfort. I couldn't do it now and I've not listened to any Floyd since.

'Look mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky.' GRRRR.
Maedhros2005-01-03 01:49:45
Heh, I haven't listened to Floyd that much either recently, but they're still my number one band. In the future, I'll pop in a Floyd CD and get into the crazy-only-listen-to-Floyd hype again.

dude, Pink Floyd is awesome!

but you must never forget the following bands (in order of awesomeness):

1. The Who (teenage wasteland is best song EVER)
2. Queen (break free is SWEET)
3. The Doors (break on through is AWESOME)
4. The Styx (domo oregato )
5. Elton John (he is right, I love saturday night)
6. David Bowie (major tom to ground control is the BEST)
7. Rolling Stones (you cant always get what you want)
8. Deep Purple (smoke on the water is SO COOL)
9. Foreigner (eye of the tiger is AWESOME running music)

but seriously, THE WHO KICKS ASS!
Maedhros2005-01-05 06:12:58
Who's Next is a masterpiece. And by the way, it's Baba o'Riley, not Teenage Wasteland tongue.gif. Behind Blue Eyes is awesome too.

NEVER forget A Perfect Circle and Tool wink.gif

Just got 'The Thirteenth Step' by APC last week. Damn wink.gif.

"I'm more than just a little curious how you're planning to go about making your amends to the dead."

How many people can put a chorus like THAT to music?

And it's not my favorite of Tool's albums, but one of Lateralus's songs has... get this... a Fibonnacci progression (albeit limited).

Black
then
white are
all I see
in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be,
reaching out to me.
lets me see.

That's 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 (rather than 5, 3, it should continue 13, 21... but that's being specific). It's still cool wink.gif

Anyway, yes, Pink Floyd is great wink.gif.

"The Trial" is probably my favorite piece on "The Wall". I've also seen the movie twice, both sober wink.gif.

Dan, Dan, Dan...

Foreigner? Eye of the Tiger!? NOOOOOOOO! Survivor are responsible for that one! tongue.gif

Oh, and 'Smoke on the Water' is one of my most hated songs ever... For Deep Purple, 'Highway Star' and 'Fireball' are much better *grin*. And also, 'Machine Head' is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Another great band, that not many people I know seem to like... Rush! They've made some fantastic music over the years, and they're still going strong. The latest 'proper' album ('Vapor Trails') is one of the best they've done for a long time, and they've still got it live.

And Alex Lifeson is one of my top guitar heroes... Possibly one of the most under-rated guitarists ever!

Oh my Gods. Soril actually talks.

Finally someone who understands me. I can't stop crying with joy. All my friends were like "Pink Floyd? Is that some kind of bird?"
Maedhros2005-01-08 01:14:56
I converted most of my friends to Pink Floyd biggrin.gif. They all had that kind of attitude, I kept peppering them with Pink Floyd stuff, and forcing them to listen to Pink Floyd. They're fans now biggrin.gif.

Rush is ok, I don't like the singer.

Yes, I do! Not very often, mind... Constant reader, irregular poster. I know that I'm usually on the active members list at the bottom! wink.gif

Yeah, Geddy Lee is a bit of an acquired taste. A lot of people find his strangely high singing voice to be a bit of a turn-off (well, that and the subject matter of a lot of the songs - bizzaro prog-concept stuff about space ships and solar federations, or oppressed trees forming a union. And a fair bit of Ayn Rand inspired writing (hey, Roark!), much of the first side of '2112' for example).

Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart are two of the best players of their respective instruments I've ever heard, though. (Although I'm a guitarist myself, so I tend to look a little more towards the technical side of things - I *love* instrumental music, especially stuff like Vai and Satriani, Paul Gilbert etc.).

I love A Perfect Circle, not that fond of Tool. I quite like The Mars Volta at the moment, and I'm going through a big Dream Theater phase.

For those of you that like Pink Floyd, just to stay on topic, you might want to take a listen to a band called Mostly Autumn, if you haven't already. Their album is called 'Passengers', and they are, in a word, phenomenal. The singer is *brilliant*, and the music is fantastic - melodic and technically excellent at the same time, much like a lot of Floyd's work. Take a listen, you won't be disappointed!
Maedhros2005-01-08 02:02:02
Most people who like Pink Floyd like Radiohead too. To me, they're meh; I listen to them sometimes, but not too much.
