Hi guys. My name is Daniel, I've played Aetolia for a year, Achaea for 3 years, and Lusternia since closed beta testing. I have really good trigger systems, so if you are interested in help setting things up for combat, just ask. I won't give you my system, but I will give you nice tips.

I thought Elessar (a.k.a. Aragorn) was a (hu)man, not an elf(en).
Unknown2005-01-07 05:47:08
Eh? How do you make the relation between Elessar and Aragorn. And Aragorn is only kind of a human. He is of the ranger people from the North, sometimes considered a different race of men....
Dan2005-01-07 07:13:16
waoh! my name is Dan (Daniel really, but I go by Dan)...

I dont have any curing triggers... mind posting the trigger message and the cure?

King Elessar is Aragorn, Ranger of the North and Heir to the Throne of Gondor. Kind of a human? How does that make sense? The Dunedain (I'm not going to bother to look up the character map for the codes for the accented vowels), or Rangers of the North, are men, even if their customs are different from those in Gondor, Rohan, Dunland or (the wood-men of) Mirkwood. The ways of the Dunedain are the closest and less-changed from the ways of Numenor, as they have been in more isolation from the rest of Western Middle-earth than other Numenoreans who fled east. This does not mean that they're only "kind of humans"; they are probably have more relation to their ancestors of old than the others of Middle-earth, as mentioned above.
Although Aragorn or Elessar is part Elven, he is still most certainly a human - as he becomes king of all the lands of the Men of western Middle-earth - and definitely not an elf. He had a life that thrice of lesser men due to his lineage and ancestors, but elves themselves are immortal, and are not effected by the Gift of Men (or Doom of Men), a.k.a. mortality.
What I'm trying to say that Aragorn/Elessar is a man - if not, then a gifted one - but by no means another race - elf, dwarf, halfling, orc, goblin, uruk, troll, ent, Mir* (or whatever the wizards are named), nor any other race in Middle-earth or other places in Tolkien's world.

EDIT: *Maiar is what they're called (thanks Sylphas).

I didn't particulary choose this name because of that.. I'm sure I heard it or read it in LOTR and then subconsciously came up with it. Thus the reason I chose to be Elfen. The other thing you should realize, is Lusternia is its own world, Aragorn from LOTR does not exist, nor does a King Elessar of sorts. I am an Elfen in the Forest Commune of Serenwilde... not some galvanting King who calls himself a ranger.

And Dan, there is a sticky at the top of this forum with the herb messages. Look through there, and if you have any questions, ask. THe sticky is really helpful. I will be making my affliction lists soon though, and will post them here.

Elessar means Elf-stone in Sindarin. It's a nickname Aragorn was given. Also, Aragorn is all human. He, like most Dunedain, was raised in Rivendell, but he was born of human parents.

Look at the previous post... I said that it doesnt matter as they are two completly different realms... You could make the argument that the character Jack of mag was a run off of Jack in Achaea, which is not necessarily true, as they are two different realms, and two different characters. Now please keep this post on topic. It was meant as a combat post, not debating over my name post.
Unknown2005-01-07 17:23:01
However, names like 'Gandalf', 'Raistlin', 'Merlin', and yes, 'Elessar' take away from the RP environment of others. How would you like a new Serenguard named 'George Bush' to start giving orders?
Unknown2005-01-07 17:41:13
The point is that I don't think most people realize that it is from a place. George Bush would obvoiusly be asked to change the name because its someone almost everyone knows! I didn't know Elessar was Aragorn's Elf given name, or I wouldn't have chosen it... you want me to change my name?? Perhaps I will! Now PLEASE, keep on topic. If you wish to speak more with me about this do it through private messages.

Okay, you're right: I'm sorry I added to the off-topic discussion. Tolkien arcana is always tempting to me. As a last note. I wouldn't bother changing your name unless a lot of people complain in game. Or, of course, if the divinity wind up objecting.

To be more on-topic. I'm starting to get to a level where I have to start thinking about PvP. I've never fought a player in an IRE game, or indeed any MUD. I've only ever bashed and crafted. Needless to say, I feel very intimidated. I know I'll need to set up some combat triggers, maybe even a complex system, to be competitive, but I don't know exactly where to start.

I'm actually decent at programming (mainly in Python, although I do know some lower level languages like C++), so the technical concepts aren't as challenging to me as the game concepts. Also, I'm probably going to have to find a new client. I use Savitar (http://www.heynow.com/savitar/), for Mac OS X, but it only supports basic triggers and macros -- no scripting.

In short, your offer to help tempts me, but I'm not experienced enough to know what to ask. Any general tips? Or places to start?

I'm working on a tutorial for zMUD, but I've only got one or two sections finished so far. I'm kinda stuck for the details of the next section I want to write, so I'm waiting for inspiration.

I'd suggest just browsing the forums, reading through the help files, and asking questions of folks you know to be experienced with combat and/or scripting. Start simple and build it up gradually. If you try to do everything at once, you'll be overwhelmed and may just quit.

zMUD was the first ever computer language (besides HTML) which I learnt, and once I got the ideas of programming (such as how variables work) by mostly just reading off the "Introduction to ..." help files and asking on forums. It was pretty easy to learn from there, just to what Zarquan suggested, and also I find (once you've got a little knowledge on zMUD) that looking at other scripts (e.g. ACP) is a good way to expand your knowledge on functions and commands.

Also a tip, try using Rapscillion. Its a mac client that I heard was very useful. I think you can find the link on www.achaea.com, where they suggest all the different clients. If you have a pc you can use, you should get zmud, its helpful. Since I use a pc, I can't be of much help, besides providing the information you will need. I just can't help you trigger it. So here is my advice:

Fuin: On the top of the combat forum, there are the lists of the herb messages etc. It doesn't have all of them, but its a damn good start. Take those, and 'uncode' them, which should be easy, just take everything out except the message itself. Then find the cure for it. Thats something you will have to do with HELP HEALINGLIST in game, since I don't have all of mine down yet... i mangled my hand in a window, so it will take a while for me to be able to get it all typed up... Anyway, when you find the cures, dont trigger the cures to be eaten when the affliction pops up, have the affliction pop up in color... the color you think of when you hear the herbs name, so maybe faeleaf would be green, or horehound would be brown. After that, set up triggers to remove the herb from your rift, eat it, and if you are in a freeforall, to put it back in. Also have some pipe triggers set up so that you can easily smoke them. I can provide you a whole pipe trigger set if you need... just have to find it.

Zarquan: If you tell me what type of help you need with the tutorial, I'll give you a hand.

Unless your name in real life is Elessar, that's quite a bad analogy.

.. Uh, carry on.
Amaru2005-01-12 21:04:53
Uhh yea, nevermind.

Sorry Jack, it was just a quick reference. I remembered seeing your name under one of the Mag guild help files, and thought of the Achaean Jack. My bad.
