I thought of a system to encourage more fighting among those of the same skill level. While dying is cool and all, fighting those who are around the same skill level as you kinda gives you at least a glimmer of hope and takes the sting of dying off. As opposed to fighting, let's say Daevos, who is six hundred times your size.
Everytime you kill someone so many times smaller than you you recieve so many points. After you accumulate so many points, you are unable to attack anyone less than 75% your size, and like wise anyone that much smaller than you cannot attack you either.
For example,
Cletus kills someone 25% his size so he recieves three points. He kills another person who is 50% is size so he recieves one point, and so on and so forth until he has accumulated 20 points. At 10 points Cletus would be unable to attack anyone 25% of his size. At 15, 50%, and at 20 75%. As each month passes without you killing anyone so much smaller than you, Cletus loses one point, and unpon death without resurgem, lichdom, vitae, or immolation, Cletus would lose 5 points.

I think the avenger system is fine as it is. If someone much larger than you kills you, there's only so many from the other side(s) with credits, so you don't have to worry about them again for awhile. It'd be very easy as well to abuse this kind of thing with newbie alts with web or other such things.

Yeah, I can't say I like the idea; tired enough having to face groups of 5+ that are lower level (where you gain little if you win; lose a lot if you lose ).

He did have the "and small people can't attack you either." At the time, I thought that was a bad idea, since THEY shouldn't be restricted, but I can see how that would work now.

It's not about killing one person who is smaller than you over and over again. It's about killing a large amount of people significantly smaller than you. It's just a way to add a smidgen of balance.

The avenger system in terms of mechanics is not unique, but the way it's incorporated to the story is exceptional. Something like this would make it OOC. I like how currently, if you REALLY want to kill someone, you can do so and just take the pacifism. Roleplay would be destroyed otherwise.

Also, keep in mind that it's not necessarily someone's might that determines how skilled they are at fighting. Say you have two players, who both buy three hundred credits. One takes those credits and puts them into a trade skill, and non-combat oriented skills like Healing or Riding. The other uses them to trans his guild skills. They're the same might, but one is going to be a lot more effective as a fighter than the other. Not to mention the player that hoards credits, transes everything, and is -still- a useless combatant, compared with the one that buys only a few, but learns to use his skills well and has a full system for cures and so forth (though this is, admittedly, a rarer situation).

I dunno I like the idea for the enjoyment it would add to combat for the lower leveled characters but I think it would really sap a lot of the RP possibilities and for the reason I just have to disagree with it. Keep it as 'real' as possible, don't enforce so many restrictions.

Big problem: How are you defining size?
From the examples, it looks like you are using might - but will not work well. Trade skills shouldn't count for or against you, and skillsets like magic and resilience have too strong of an effect. Additionally, and more fundamentally, might is completely OOC. The current avenger makes IC sense - Avechna exists and has power, etc.
Other systems are equally silly. Levels? Penalizes bashers, and level is not a good measure of fighting ability. Combat rankings are too erratic.

I'd be screwed if it was based on might like you said. Since I am transcendent in everything, there are like two people with equal might to me, killing anyone else would "gain me points."
Richter2005-01-10 23:45:05
Yeah, I have more might than 95% of the populace, I agree on the last point.
Unknown2005-01-10 23:58:37
I like how the avenger system is but I wish my suspect status would vanish so I can kill someone thats still on there.

Another unwanted side effect of a system like you suggest would be the same reason that Grace only lasts for a short time (in Achaea, at least) before being removed automatically. People like to abuse their immunity to attacks by spying and just being generally annoying. Even somewhat passive skills that would just move a person or shut them up cannot be used, and it gets on your nerves quickly when they're somewhere that you need or want to be and can't easily ignore their idiocy.

What if instead of the avenger killing you, the avenger killed the highest ranked person in commune or city.
Maybe would give incentive for communes and cities to control their members.

Or just give disgruntled peons more incentive to call down the avenger and get their leaders killed. A whole new way for spies and traitors to get their revenge! Yay!
