Crow Totems

Taintwood coming soon to go along with this. Critique please! (Yes, I am running out of ideas I haven't already used, so this probably won't be as good as my others. sad.gif I will try though.)
Also, I thought having the Moon/Night/Crow/Stag antipathy would be an awesome concept to exploit, so I put in Lycanthropy here and propose a new ability for Moon (The reason there's no similar one in Night is because they have Blue Moon).

Scythe - A scythe of lunar light and stag antler strikes against the night.

Converting the nature talisman into a silvery scythe composed of moonlight and stag horn will deal increased damage on a curse to a follower of Mother Night or Brother Crow, though its effectiveness against others is decreased.

----------Specialisation: Crow----------

Murder - Call a murder of Crow's sacred beasts.
*5 power (Master Ravenwood)*
Summoning a great flock of crows from the sky, the corvid forces them to do his bidding, at first learning the simple technique of encouraging them to peck at an opponent's face, blinding him, severings ears and even scalping him.

Wasp - The buzzing wasp is mindless, but bears deadly poisons in its sting.

The wasp's spirit weakens an opponent's physical strength with wasting poisons when its mark is pressed into them, inflicting them with lethargy and physical weakness.

Wickerman - Coat an opponent with a wooden armour.

Though the wicker armour the brand covers an opponent's skin with will protect them from crushing damage, it restricts their movement, slowing fleeing, and heightens their susceptibility to fire.

Bat - The shadowy bat is frail, but can absorb the strength of others.

The spirit of the bat siphons both health and mana away from an opponent with a successful brand touch, though for its sustenance it absorbs a portion of the health of its owner in addition.

Carrion - The Crow is a devourer of death and decay.
The corvid may devour the corpses of his enemies to provide sustenance for himself - additionally, consuming the bodies of followers of Stag will restore some of his life essence.

Spider - The ensaring spider is weak, but possesses a fierce wit and cunning.

The spider spirit's power wraps an opponent in thick webs which, though they take more effort to writhe from than cosmic webs or vines, are often broken by an attempted physical attack.

Abduct - Carry an opponent high into the air.

Ordering the murder to abduct a target lifts her into the sky, dropping her a moment later. This is strenuous, however, and cannot be performed by the crows often.

Beetle - The fearsome beetle is inaccurate, but claims an awesomely crushing strength.

The beetle spirit's power tramples an opponent's legs when its mark is pressed into them, potentially breaking one or more of their limbs.

Fadefeathers - A shifting mass of feathers both aids and restricts movement.

Ordering the murder to form a cloak of black feathers around a target reduces their dexterity by disrupting their physical movements, and grants freedom to the magical auras by nullifying magics that prevent summoning.

Egg - The corvid's egg reforms him completely upon resurrection.
*3 power*
Embedding an ebony egg into the ground allows it to act as a conduit for the soul, so that upon the corvid's resurrection from the Portal he immediately returns to the egg's location in the same defensive state as at his death.

Bale - The piercing gaze of Crow strikes sheer horror into the hardiest opponent.

Conjuring into the eyes a terrifying red glare, the blackfeather can imbue his baleful gaze with the power to paralyse opponents and even stun them for a brief time.

Flock - Order the murder to completely surround an opponent's head.

Surrounding an opponent's vision completely, the murder deals intense damage and wounding, as well as blacking her out, though they will need to rest shortly after.

Whisperwind - Send whispering madnesses through the wind.
>
Whispering a message to his murder, the corvid can release them with a puff of smoke to transmit the image to the target's eyes. The crows will need to rest after this, though for a far shorter period of time than with other techniques.

Taintlink - Emit corruptions of the body from the mark.
*3 power*
The touch of Crow's brand channels physical maladies from the corvid's body into an unlucky target, though leaving the room can break the link.

Lycanthropy - The corruptive touch of the corvid induces lunar madness.
*5 power (Master Ravenwood)*
Inflicting the curse of lycanthropy onto an opponent, though it temporarily increases both their strength and intelligence, will also bestow different uncurable manias, neuroses and phobias, depending on the state of the moon. Followers of the Moon totem, studiers of the lunar arts, are more vulnerable to this technique, as their closeness to Mother Moon makes this disease's contraction swifter.

Flowfeathers - Remanifest in nearby tainted ground.
*1 power*
As a means of escape, the corvid may will the murder to dissipate him into a scattering of feathers, relocating to a random tainted forest in the local area, though

Darkbrand - The foul spirits of the Glomdoring are simultaneously channeled into an opponent.
*8 power (Master Ravenwood)*
Leaking corrupted energies from the mark of Crow, the corvid can strike an opponent simultaneously with the marks of the Wasp, Spider, Beetle, and Bat.

Wyrm - The titanic worm is slow, but its constricting coils are unavoidable.
*5 power*
By entering into a deep meditative trance, incapable of any other actions, the corvid may trap an opponent in almost inescapable, yet incorporeal bindings. Writhing from these bindings, difficult though they are to conjure, takes a considerable amount of time, though the ritual used to summon them is also longer than most.

Crowform - Shift into the image of Brother Crow himself.
*10 power (Master Ravenwood)*

The greatest gift of Brother Crow is granting the corvid his form, destroying his murder as a sacrifice. The cunning mind and body of Crow infuses his follower's, granting him increased intelligence, and dexterity, and imbues him with dark wings to take to the skies. Lastly, the shimmering feathers of Crow become usable as a weapon, spraying them at opponents for unavoidable cutting damage.

I hope Wickerman isn't a bit over the top as far as these things go, but then again, we have crucifixion and torture so I wouldn't imagine it a problem.

Sorry about the slightly weak theme, again. Will do better with Continua, Continuum's my home, after all. wink.gif

Crowmark, because it was lame, has been replaced with Murder. And various new powers to do with said murder - Abduct, Murder, and Flock. Flowfeathers, fadefeathers, whisperwind also made Murder powers. Credit to Maedhros for that.
Credit to Cronnacht for name "Corvid," too. Because it's so much better than the one I had.

Well, now all they need to do is code the cities and Glom and use Shiri's ideas and we are all set
Richter2005-01-11 00:28:02
And use the structures I've already designed for Glomdoring.

Sorry to say Shiri, I haven't read any of them yet, as I was about to write my own, and it was either my ego, or wanting to be not influenced by other ideas while I write mine.

All the same, commentary is appreciated. tongue.gif (Specially from the people who can do something about it. hide.gif)

Honestly, I've found the skill ideas thus far rather silly, and lacking the polish the current skillsets have.

Any specific ones you think I could work on?
Shamarah2005-01-11 00:46:04
If I understand Egg correctly, that's a really, really bad idea, because you could never kill someone past vitae that way.
Shiri2005-01-11 00:49:04
Well, I didn't think it would be so bad, but editted to just be Portal ress anyway.
Maedhros2005-01-11 01:16:35
This one's pretty good. It has the coolness factor, though you'd probably want to add some better skills, I can't imagine anyone with this skillset being powerful, except maybe against some Serewnilders.
Shiri2005-01-11 01:19:38
Hrm, you might be right. I think I did the same thing as transmutation and added some disadvantages (case in point, Bat), but in the process made some of the skills a bit dodgy...having said that, egg, lycanthropy (situationally, could be a defence too if you wanted), flowfeathers, fadefeathers, taintlink and whisperwind seemed fairly good to me. Maybe I should tweak around a bit. More specific examples welcome.
Maedhros2005-01-11 02:21:18
Hmm, I don't really know specifically, it just gives me that imperssion.

For one, Beetle is useless against anyone with a mending vial, and it's relatively high up.

I'd think Gaze is pretty useless to, aside from group combat, since paralyse is way more useful when it's passive, like runes.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a pull-into-trees attack; I dunno if it's in a different skillset or something, I know almost nothing about Serenwilde skills.

Maybe something like...

Flock
*10 power, draws 1% reserves per

I'd like to see you do better. The Gods made these skillsets over a few years. Shiri and I will spend maybe up to an hour on them.
Hazar2005-01-11 02:24:01
Oh, nice stuff, Maedhros! Put it in, Shiri, please?

I just want more facepaints for the warriors. Right now it's mainly spells.
Shiri2005-01-11 12:46:03
Oh, whoops, I forgot all about the warriors. >_< Will do some more, and steal some of Maedhros' ideas, once I'm back at home, seeing as at school I don't have access to my filey thing where I put this stuff.

And I do spend more than an hour in these, by the way, I'm not good enough that I can do a whole set in an hour. tongue.gif

Well, I'll steal some of those skills, as I say *puts credit sign in*, but I thought I should clarify on those 3.

Gaze, maybe. Yeah, that could do with an upgrade, like a tiny stun with the paralysis.

Beetle breaks multiple limbs potentially, and hey, there is a nihilist skill at maybe gifted that only does the one, so it can't be that bad.

Pull into trees is covered by Monkey totem, which Serenwilde already has, and you automatically have by virtue of mastering totems. (Which you would need to get Crow.)

EDIT: New updates. Yay Maedhros.

Just some random thoughts.

How about changing the specialisation fron Crow to Corvus? This would reflect a Glom Druids ability to utlise aspects of Raven just as those in Serenwilde can spiritbond Crow. You don't really think Brennan gave up the powers he was granted by Raven? This would add a little flavour as you could also use powers influenced by other members of the Corvus genus like the Jackdaw and Rook. Perhaps characters could actually have a partial transformation into the different species.

Ex:

JACKDAW - The smallest and most social of the Corvids.

By taking on the form of the Jackdaw a user of Corvus reduces there size but gains quickness allowing them to establish balace at a faster rate.
While in Jackdaw form the the Corvus user gains these additional abilities.

This establishes an ether link link between the user and other Jackdaws.

ROOK- Slightly larger then the Jackdaw the Rook derives its moniker from the its unusual call. The Rook is also a master scavenger.

While in Rook form the Corvus user is reduced in size but gains greater quickness allowing them to establish equilibrium at a faster rate. A Rook also gains the following abilities.

Rooks are monogamous creatures and very loyal to their mates. Two Rooks may bond with each other. Two Rooks thus bonded have a moderate increases in the effectivenss of any established defenses.
Rooks are notorious scavengers. Any food attempts by a Rook to scavenge for food has twice the normal chance of success and is twice as nutritious.

CROW- Smaller then the raven but just as clever the Crow is noted for feeding on the eggs and fledglings of other birds.
The Crow is a wise bird and invoking him reflects this in the Corvus users intelligence. Crows gain the additional abilities.

Crows are dangerous in numbers. For each additional Crow in a flock the power of the flock's leader is exponentially increased. Those Crows in the flock that are not the leader may not take offensive actions.
The Kaw of the Crow saps the will of those wh hear it.
Crows are known carrior eaters. A Crow can feast on the flesh of another to grant itself sustenance.

RAVEN- The largest of the Corvids the Raven is a creature of mystery.
The Raven is a wise bird and this is reflected in the Corvus users intelligence. A Raven also gains the following abilities.

The Raven is the font of wisdom and what he can give he can also take away. With this power a raven can befuddle his enemies.
The Raven is the font of wisdom and what he can give he can also take away. With this power a Raven can place the curse of forgetfulness on his enemies.
Normally thought of as loners, Ravens have great power when gathered in numbers. Grouped together Ravens can drain the power of thier enemies.

Note: These are all rough ideas. The dsrciptions are sparce. I haven't provided any power usages or number requirements for the multi-user skills. I don't really know what good guidelines would be. Feel free to suggest any. I am pondering doing similar set ups for Wasp, Arachnid, Carrion bettle, and Bat.

Please disect or comment.
Shiri2005-01-11 21:45:52
Well, although Corvid is a cool name, which I am promptly stealing (Blackfeather was someone's idea because I couldn't think of it, possibly Ialie's, I forget), the thing is that just like Geomancy, Crow skills have been Tainted. So in the same way Geomancers know Sickening and stuff, Crow followers would know Crowwy skills. You know.
Unknown2005-01-11 21:51:38
Crowwy? I did include Crow skills. I included the other aspects because I don't expect Glom Druids to have totally abandoned the skills they used to know. That and the entire Corvus genus is pretty interesting and the Jackdaws and Rooks deserve a mention dammit!
Unknown2005-01-11 21:52:44
Double post. doh.gif
Hazar2005-01-11 23:34:03
Here's the problem the idea. When the Taint came along, Raven didn't just walk off into a corner and become dormant while Crow ran the show. Crow IS Raven, after he's been touched by the Taint. Raven is no more. Any skills that came from Raven now come from Crow.
