I was looking through a list of cool words on the net somewhere, and demesne was in there. I read the mildly interesting definition and was about to move on when i looked at the pronounciation. Check this out.
demesne
(de-main' or de-meen') n. 1: possession, dominion. 2: in law, possession (of real estate) as one's own. 3: formerly, the land or estate belonging to a lord and not rented or let, but kept in his hands. 4: a lord's mansion and the land around it. 5: a region; domain. 6: a realm (of activity).
Am I the only one who wants to say de-MES-nee or de-MES-neh or something?
Not to mention misreading it and trying de-MENSE
de-meen just sounds so wrong

I always called it "de-MAIN", so to speak. I can see why people would call it a "de MEZ nee" having not learnt French or anything, though, but what I can't understand is how people spell it "demense." I mean the stupid word is a major part of 3 guilds. It's like going on about Celestine angles. Or the Serenwidle commune.

EDIT: Blargh, double posting. Stupid me.

Demesne...
Pronounced a bit like 'domain' and means pretty much the same thing for one meaning of the word 'domain', in the case of the demesnes in Lusternia.
But you can see why people would pronounce it wrong. The spelling is just dodgy as well...

You kind of have to wonder why they just didn't call it "domain", rather than "demesne".

I always pronounced it as "dimeen". I even spell it dimeen when Rauros is speaking.

I refuse to pronounce it any way other than Deh-MEN-Se
