Maybe I am being whingy - I have done this on occasion too - but talking about your health, mana and experience in numbers and percentages is REALLY OOC in my opinion. I just don't see how it can be justified as IC, especially since we are in a fantasy world, not one filled with gadgets that might possibly give percentage reeadings on life force and such.

Agree? Disagree? Shut up?

It is impossible to have a pure roleplaying environment in any game where any sort of statistic is measured numerically. Might as well learn to live with it.

Thought that myself, actually. I can still hope though.
Daganev2005-01-20 06:13:26
In as much as we are roleplaying, and delving into the realm of make believe, I just pretend that numbers and stats that I say are being translated by the gaming envorionment into the proper modern lusternian slang that would convey the same thing.

I have 18 str == However one in lusternia would say, I can bench 350.

They could at least have "names" for each rank of numbers, like "average", "above-average" etc., like in Shadows of Isildur. Oooh, ooh, and you could have "bars" in the prompt like SoI, oooh.

QUOTE(SoI prompt)
< ******, |||||| >

That may not be exactly how it is, but at least similar.
* = health
| = fatigue
Daganev2005-01-20 09:02:35
so instead of saying I have 18 str and my blades do 500 damage, I'll say I have above average strength and when I hit people it takes off two barry thingies. Theres no way around it.
Unknown2005-01-20 10:06:15
I know, I know. But at least it's better than:

5867h, 4922m, 1290e, 10p, 24795en, 59392w ex-

But, they need to change it somehow...
medheriadh2005-01-20 10:21:15
You know, when I played pen-and-paper RPG's, talking about stats was considered totally OOC. no-one would say to another IC 'i have 15 strength' or whatever. There were stats, but no-one mentioned them.

Now, when you have stats and then techie stuff (client, telnet, macros, aliases, etc.), it is like the techie vocabulary is so way OOC that it makes talking about stats sound almost IC.

However, I agree with Quidqyboo, and I try to avoid talking about stats as much as possible.

There is no NEED to discuss exact damage or health or anything like that.

You say, "well I may not be the biggest Elfen around but my curse will make you wish you never met me" (or something as Bruce Willis as that).

Translation: "I am size 11 and my curse does 600 damage".

It just really spoils the mood for me when people feel the need to mention their stats.
Shiri2005-01-20 17:01:15
I'm told that Imperian had a sytem (similar to, not the same as) this for...like...what was it? I think it was experience. Like you'd say, "I'm to the 59th circle." instead of, "I'm 90% to level 59." Having that for stats too might be nice, eh? happy.gif
Gwylifar2005-01-20 23:49:07
Even "level 59" is kind of annoying, frankly.
Shiri2005-01-20 23:51:40
Yeah, which's why I said, "59th circle." *G*
Melanchthon2005-01-21 00:15:12
When so much of the world is derived from them, it is very hard to discuss it without bringing in the numbers.

I've been trying to balance it by just using tells for the number crunching, and keeping says completely in-character.

Regarding levels, all this talk of 'circle' this or that is a rather weak substitute. If you really must reference your level and want to stay in-character, use your level rank title.
Gwylifar2005-01-21 13:26:34
I do try to do that, but people just give blank stares, and besides, some of those titles are just awful.
