Saying "..."

Okay, I get what it's supposed to mean when you say "...". It's that blank wordless stare when words fail you. But if you're not saying anything, why are you saying something? I mean, for times when you're emoting but not saying, imagine if we had a whole system for doing that, with lots of variety of different kinds of emotions to express, and even a way to make your own custom ones on the fly. Oh, wait, we do! Maybe we should use it?

Maybe we already have one, but if not, can we get a BLANK emote to make it more likely people will do this? I'll write up the text for it if it'd help.

As for using "..." on aetherwaves... still don't. If you're not saying something audible, we can't hear you. The same reason you shouldn't -romp- or -snuggle- in an aetherwave (but -giggle- or -laugh- might be all right), don't use the aetherwaves to say nothing, out loud.

(Edit: I'm not objecting to using the ellipsis in a sentence, just to saying nothing whatever but "...".)

Emotes you can hear in your voice, like you can hear when someone is smiling or crying etc, are fine for the channels, imho. The '...' thing in says..well, I've never thought about that. You're right. You can't say silence silently.
Lyren2005-01-21 14:51:44
What do other people see when you use the SAY command on its own? From your POV, it comes out "You open your mouth but say nothing," which is preferable to "You say, '...'".
Shoshana2005-01-21 14:52:30
I always thought of it as someone opening their mouth to speak, but nothing coming out because of speechlessness or whatever...
Shiri2005-01-21 18:23:22
Hm. I use that, yes. (Lyren, no one else sees when you just do SAY, incidentally.) An emote to do instead might be nice. I always thought of it more as a sort of...you're being interrupted in the middle of speaking, and it's a big sort of "duh" pause. Which is why it's a bit better on channels. Still, though, you've a point. *tries to stop*
Unknown2005-01-21 18:25:31
I think other people should be able to see it when you type SAY on its own.
Amaru2005-01-21 18:50:01
It represents an awkward or suggestive silence in a conversation. Because of the nature of Lusternia, it's hard to tell if someone is actually quiet for a reason or if they're just doing something else. Saying '...' isn't such a bad way of getting past this. Everyone knows what it symbolises, you don't have to be offended by the fact that Lusternia calls it a 'say'.

I'm fond of doing custom emotes for things like that, myself.

Custom emotes are fun and you hardly ever see anyone doing them.
Richter2005-01-21 19:15:28
You're right about that, and I do it far to often.

"..."

Shiri2005-01-21 19:26:11
It would be handy if people could see SAY, but...well, I don't see it as a sort of "speechless", more as a sort of...":glare:...shut up...just...shut up" type thing. So it's not REALLY the same.
Daganev2005-01-21 22:54:46
I prefer blink...

Try the emote NOTHING

I didn't find this until after I got my voice back, which nullified my needing it, but...you know.
Shiri2005-01-21 23:01:05
Hm, well, that covers one application of it! Nice!
Gwylifar2005-01-22 16:11:53
See, the fact that different people think it means different things just goes to show, using an emote for emoting is more apt. And thanks for the tip on NOTHING, Aris, that's a great one. I would never have guessed to try "NOTHING" as a verb.

That is a pet peeve of mine, someone saying "..." especially over organization channels.

Those city, guild and clan channels are a mental link, you cannot hear someone going "..." just like you cannot hug or snuggle someone over a city or guild channel. I want to scream everytime someone emotes over a channel. Or does something like *hugs you tight* over a channel. You cannot see grins, or anything like that via those links...so why put them out there?

Etain, stop bringing up old threads?
Shiri2005-02-12 21:10:00
Yesh, stop necroing, as I said in the other one. biggrin.gif

I am new to these forums, I didn't see the rules stating you cannot look over old threads you have never seen before to comment on them. If my reading and commenting on past threads is so offensive, then you are perfectly welcome to send me a PM in regards.

Aw, we weren't serious. happy.gif (Or, I wasn't. ninja.gif)

I don't mind '...' over aetherwaves. You know that the other person has sent a message over the waves, but its just sort of blank static. Like holding down the button on a walkie-talkie and then not saying anything.
