More interesting travel

I'm not sure how this would be implimented specifically, but I think it would be interesting of long-distance travel was harder.

I realize the Basin is pretty small, but it can't be so small that walking from one corner of the Basin to the other, excepting for gravediggers, is an entirely risk free affair.

Perhaps more aggro mobs, bandits or something on the road, that would be nice.

Weather could be more of a factor, see my other post

More wandering mobs on the roads, roads are meant to be busy places, especially near cities, not the sole domain of pilgrims and adventurers. More caravans, wandering traders you can buy things from, messengers carrying important documents for the mail system instead of the current bird system.

It would open up some RP opprotunity, people could command caravans and hire guards, run the mail, give a new twist to comm trading.

Travel and the roads could just be a bit...more I suppose, though I realize it would probably be hard to code

No aggro mobs. Novices and not-exactly-combat-oriented people go there too.

Instead of the mail being magically delivered from Person A to Person B, wouldn't it be fun to see a bird come flying through the room on his way to his destination? You could purchase different "postage rates" at the post office to have your mail sent slowly or quickly, by turtle or by hawk. Add a bit of realism and entertainment at the same time.

I don't want to get attacked when I walk around. I sure don't get attacked while walking around Oak Harbor. *eye*

Sounds like fun to me. Maybe the aggro mobs should only appear at nighttime. All the hoodlums waiting for a loner to assault. And on day time, just your regular folks wandering around, talking on the streets, and I like the idea of the wanderig salesman. Though I am not sure if many out there would... seeing how Bob already gets too much trouble for simply being a stationary salesman smile.gif

Wandering salesmen wouldn't have to sell what Bob sells, they could just sell random trinkets and interesting little items and such.

Like the sellsman in Aetolia with all the little anti-vampire items?

For the mail system I want to see a gnome steam cannon at the post office and when a letter is mailed you see a gnome load it fiddle with some gears and hold his ears as he pulls a cord then BLAM! it goes soaring. On the receiving end you hear a whistling sound followed by a loud report over head as the mail tube explodes. Your mail gently falling down into your hands on a small parachute.

The current mail system is alright. The only problem with it is that the birds can't be intercepted... or can they? glare.gif

Yep, as I am insinuating... It would be great if mail could actually be intercepted and tracked down. Probably a change that could be implemented to make this possible, would be if "birds" flew through a designed course, and depending on mail priority they may or may not land on a clearing or something to rest. When they do... *WHAM* Bird gets hit, and bird drops package. ninja.gif
Shiri2005-01-28 18:44:52
That would be fairly interesting. You can keep the OOC messages to messages, and just have nice interceptible letters if you're not bothered from an OOC perspective whether your IC letter gets caught or not. Well, um, I think it would be cool anyway. tongue.gif

People would become more paranoic, that is what I think. So people would resort more to messaging anything they with to communicate to someone, or use tells. And probably to deliver packages, they would just teleport. *snap* The only kind of letters that would be left vulnerable would be anonymous letters, unless the anonymous sender finds an alternative to deliver the letter without revealing their identity. Lusternia is sooo deep with communication sad.gif Just imagine how grand would be to be able to intercept anything. Expecting a letter containing a poem from your fiance along with a million gold? Expecting a report from your anonymous spy in the enemy front? Too bad, because a wiseguy decided to rob the mail laugh.gif

Oh... unless... for starters mail systems weren't instant. Top priority mail could be sent at a few seconds worth, while regular mail could be hold at the post office to be sent later on in the day. That they, people would be able to break into post offices! smile.gif

That's precisely what I was getting at, Desdemona. I'd like to see the letters actually delivered and we'd be able to "catch" the note in transit. It would add an interesting way for anyone of any class to spy or steal, and we all know how interesting spies and thieves make the realms. unsure.gif (You all know you like the conflict, even if you don't like the spies and the thieves. Your lives would be boring, if not for these folks! Heh.)

Let people kill the birds and intercept your letters!!
No one would ever use mail again. smile.gif

Ack no? Besides carrier pidgeons fly HIGH in the sky. No way can it be intercepted unless you can fly THAT high.

Erm, you know... Another cool idea would be if everyone weren't able to speak a common language, making people to stick to the racial tongues or commune/city languages. And that ONLY written language were the same for everyone, for some strange twist of fate. Oh, and that messages and tells didn't exist. That way people would always resort to mail to communicate internationally. Unless you could also manage to learn the language of another place... I am not sure why I suggested this.tongue.gif But maybe where I am trying to get is... that if the mail system were actually used much more frequently than it is, thanks to the communication boundries, and birds could be interecepted... It would be heaven. closedeyes.gif

Edit: Maybe a future future event could be an... Babel event where suddenly everyone looses the common tongue and um messages and tells disappear! laugh.gif

Lets just start by removing shouts and see how that goes.
