I don't think I've -ever- seen a shout people haven't objected to that wasn't NPC inspired - and even THOSE were rarely uncontested. I wonder, what kind of shouts do you think are valid? People use them for taunts, vents, hellos and goodbyes, and all sorts of things people dislike hearing, but no one's ever happy about an original shout or anything. What would it take?
Shamarah2005-02-12 02:46:59
... ignore this.

I find that the best use for shouts is grandstanding. Big, majesting, sweeping speeches. Progaganda and that sort of thing.
Akraasiel2005-02-12 04:38:27
Well, people appeared to like my shout just a moment ago, if anyone has a log of it, I cant remember what I said.
Hmm, and it was only two minutes ago too...

Druid of the Hart, Akraasiel Tliwx, Of the Scelaige shouts, "I have a tale to
tell you all of a little elfen girl and a viscanti boy and their pet talking
Merian, or I would if I could remember it. It was quite touching nonetheless
and would have caused you all to set aside the troubles and have a group hug,
so lets just pretend I told the tale and stop raiding each others villages and
hug and make up. Even you fish people. (No offense to the fishmen)"

Shouts to me, are annoying as fsck. Unless they pertain to everyone in the realms, (bragging to all the realms does not count, nor does announcing your undying love for someone) there is no reason for people to announce hello and goodbye via shouts, nor is there reason for people to shout how they are going to kill this person or that person. In my opinion, shouts should not even be used by mortals. Is it really feasible that we should be able to hear someone from all over the "world"? Has there ever been a productive and useful shout, save in times of war maybe? The only people who should be able to shout are the Divine, because it makes sense that their voices would be heard across great distances.
I am sure many of you will jump on me about this saying "Just turn shouts off!" and well, I do when it gets annoying. However, if you look at it from an RP perspective...shouting for mortals just does not make sense.
Shouting is just another way to try to draw attention to yourself, and is a tacky and obvious way to do it.
*end rant*

I like minnows personally, or... of course you could put a Merian in armour and call it a sardine in a can....

Havent you ever read any legends, Lugh bellowed so loud his cry was heard all the way across Erin. Shouts travelling across vast distances when significant people shouted was a fairly common portion of myth.

Which Lugh are you talking about? The only Lugh I know of is a god, and Etain never objected to gods being able to shout.
Akraasiel2005-02-12 05:49:18
Lugh wasnt -technically- a god... at least not when he started.
Besides Cuchulain did it too.

I don't think shouts are literally people shouting. I figure that it's someone forcing a message over every single Aetherwave at the same time; thus the cost of endurance.

You know, this is the entire point of my question. Why is EVERYONE not shoutsoff ALL the time? Because you didn't actually describe a shout that WOULDN'T be annoying, so there's no reason to keep it on at all, is there? I'm wondering why the people who rant about them so much have them on at all, because there's never a shout they wouldn't complain about.
Unless they're masochists or something, it just doesn't make sense.

Actually, it is remotely entertaining to me to see people prove themselves to be attenion seeking niblets. I know that whoever is shouting dumb things, is someone that I will be able to make fun of later.
and yes, I am a masochist.
Eldanien2005-02-14 15:48:48
Hmm, a masochist. That might explain some things.

Are there such things as good shouts? Imo, shouts and public post just contribute to the pollution on Lusternia... thanks to the gods for Shoutsoff
Probably a good shout would be something like Guido said, speeches... or minor announcements you want people to hear but not necessarily needs to be posted. Or even maybe a small piece of poetry someone has come up with and simply wishes to recite it before they forget it.
