Constructive comments only, please. Any bitching or snide remarks would be best left to other threads.
Is karma totally useless? What instead? Can karma be fixed?
I love Bricriu's suggestion of modifying karma.
But, first, look at the intention. To curb PK on Prime. Now, I doubt most of the problem is Narsrim killing Daevos and Kaervas killing Tuek and... etc. ad infinitum.
The problem is my youngest brother creating a character, pursuing -no- PK actions -whatsoever-, and getting randomly killed by a Seren during the Seren-Mag war. Why? Because he was a non-novice Nihilist.
I can say I wasn't happy with that from an OOC standpoint, especially when the killer wasn't a non-name.
Luckily, he found a better way to spend his time (and he was honestly interested in Lusternia).
The administration has stated that PK -will- be curbed somehow. Karma doesn't work? Offer constructive criticism. To allow the administration to possibly read this thread without getting pissed off themselves, please leave bitching about karma -out of it-.

My ideas are for someone to lose all karma when they attack someone. A system to punish people for killing randomly, yes, but it's too open to abuse as things stand now.
Alternately, if you downgraded spores, catacombs and hermit to have a 4 second delay during which you can't do anything and made lichdom a passive state instead of a slightly improved vitae and made it impossible to summon and teleport to non-allies, most of the people who do rampant pk would actually have to die. Problem solved, no need for a karma system.

Simplistically, take the company mantra and actually apply it to the game design. Why, when everything that has ever been said points to the opinion that PK should take place on the Planes, do all important conflicts take place on the Prime? This isn't a fault of the players doing the killing. It's the fault of the game design. Either restructure the realm in such a fashion as to actually make the Prime a place where killing one another serves little purpose and being on the Planes has a better risk/reward ratio, and or switch the mantra entirely and start making design changes in such a way as to make death on the Prime less of an issue for people and involvement in conflicts on the Prime more avoidable by those who wish no place in it.

I'm of the opinion that the purpose of Karma is to not only curb PK on prime, but to have the larger goal of creating a world where having someone who can kill lots of people vs having someone who can talk his way out of a gravedigger pit, is not the defining factor to world politics.
i.e With Karma, I feel the dynamics of village questing and power questing will define the great city just as much as the ability to remove enemies during a time of war, and just as important as the abiliy to create agreements and treaties between cities/communes.
It also allows even those players who only spend 1 hour a day in the game to be able to feel as if they are contributing to the game and thier society as a whole.

That's not really what the topic of this thread was meant to address, Daganev. We're trying to discuss how to fix Karma, or more appropriately, how to reduce the amount of PK on the Prime. Mind deleting your post? Wouldn't want too much clutter.

Well, it was worth a shot. Thanks Rhysus. Can this thread be closed now?

The topic was ment to adress Karma and "fix it." HOwever in order to fix something properly I think its important that you look at all aspects of what you are fixing. Sure I can try to fix my flat tire by sticking air in it, but unless I notice that tire needs to free of holes, sticking air in it will be a big waste of time.

I think most of the alternative solutions have been summarized here -
http://lusternia.ire-community.com/index.php?showtopic=1994
The reasoning behind each is spread out of multiple threads and would be redundant to repeat here. My preferences:
- Remove curses and downgrade blessings
- Allow cursing to be done on vengeance (not suspect). I can't find the post, but it's a simple concept.
People are trying to be constructive, but there's a lot of room for frustration.
(cue ad hominem attacks here)
the end
