The extinction of Runes??

I'm just curious what you guys think about this. While as a knight I can't play with Dreamweaving, it seems that most people are abandoning Runes for it. I'm not sure if there's a real risk, but it would seem that if the trend continues, we could find ourselves with a shortage of runic mages/druids, and thus, in quite a bad position when it comes to city/commune defenses.

What do you guys think? Is there a need for concern? Do you think the sheer 'newness' and all of Dreamweaving is going to lure people away from the Runes skillset which quite a few people complain about? Or will it be kept simply for its more offensive nature?

People will always still use runes. It might be a little harder to find a trans runist, but there'll always be people who use it.

Every now and then I'll probably switch back to Runes and put enough lessons back into it to get what I need for about 200 statues, get all the runes and keep the runebags, and just get a novice with Runes to outrb any of the runes I need for statues whenever I need them. Shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I think its funny that Dreamweaving is supposed to be secretive and stealthy.. but like EVERYONE is going to have it... just amuses me, but, it is an interesting twist, having the Mages essentially become the new Snakes.

Yeah, there are a bunch of Geomancers who are still trans Runes. Forgetting trans Runes and transing Dreamweavers only took me an additional 60 credits or so...so I really don't think this is the extinction of runes.

As for weakening defenses...I doubt it. There will always be people who can create runes for statues, and if the need arises, I'm sure someone would be willing to take the heat and learn runes. I can't say that I used runes extensively in combat, or at least enough so that without them I'll be completely lacking in terms of an offense. Not that I'm any good at fighting, but embedding memoryloss or narcolepsy is pretty damn useful.

I'm never giving up my runes. Runes is FAR superior to dreamweaving combat-wise.

Dreamweavers will take over the world, forcing poor people like Arilyon to use thier rune skillz to make statues for hours.
Unknown2005-03-22 22:44:46
Hehe, some of us still kept runes....though one *point me* sucks at it pretty badly so far.

I love my runes.. I know how they work. It's a comfort zone! It's like that security blanket kids carry around when they're young. Let me be happy in my mediocrity!
Revan2005-03-22 22:47:44
The only real use for dreamweaving in combat is the beefed up demesne. Otherwise, it's not that great at all. Yay blackout... but... what are you going to use it with? Can't really afflict with no runes =/

Aside from that, mix up a dreamweaver demesne user and a runist. Dreamweaver screws people up with their demesne and the runist screws them with the runes. Makes for excellent team combat.

Large demesne, small area of blackout motes, chasm.
Unknown2005-03-22 22:52:37
Don't they have to be punctured first, before the motes will hit them?
Nyla2005-03-22 22:53:17
Hartstone demesne was basically runes in the first place
Sylphas2005-03-22 22:57:55
Embedded motes hit without puncture, last I checked. Casted motes do not.
Iridiel2005-03-23 12:23:23
Wait until they make a rune that screws dreamwalkers on way or the other (attacking them while on dreamform, for example, or forcing them back into their bodies, or whatever) and things will be much more balanced *grin*
It's just about something new to play with, many people will switch just because is new and want to try it.
If knights developed a new specialization wich sounded cool, many would do the change on the first 2 weeks.

Firstly, i dont believe they are going to make any more attacks that actually harm Dreamweavers since, you need to put someone to sleep before you can do any damage an that it self i quite hard, few good triggers, insomnia, metawake, you are basically immune to the damage one. The one thing i'd like to see is a difference between Dream Motes Embeded in the Dreamrealm and the Corporeal realm, as in one being able to hit corporeal beings and the other non corporeal beings, mainly cause i'd like to have a passive defence against Dreamweavers biggrin.gif

I've said from day one that the sneaky spy like guild is the mages, and I like that because its not the real purpose of the guild, so you can actually get sneaky people to pretend they arn't spies.

I think runes will become a second tradeskill for some people, since runes are needed (I think?) for statues and totems. Of course, I'm probably wrong about that.

Yep, you're wrong. We do statues and such for free in the defense of our cities/communes.
