The Viravain Catastrophe

I'm posting this because I'm curious as to the thoughts that other players are having. By this Event, I mean the deTainting of Gloriana up till this post.

Personally, while I hope I'm right and this leads to Glomdoring, my response is lukewarm at best. The real meat of the event(The seal breaking and the Divine Interaction) was pretty cool, but a whole lot of this ongoing thing seems to be just waiting.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want action 24/7... But this afternoon, we had a good bit of momentum, it was interesting and exciting, and now it seems like the whole thing has totally stalled. The deTainting seemed a bit unnecessarily drawn-out, but not too bad.

Some constructive thoughts:
1) For any given day of an event, have a definitive ending. This keeps it from feeling like we're sort of hanging out to dry. Right now, I sort of get the "Ok... Now what?" feeling. It's like we're almost supposed to go back to business as usual, other than not shouting and dodging Viravain.
2) If there's a choice between drawing out an event so the coders/builders can finish a project and delaying the start of the event, go with the second option. The "downtime" in between the event parts tends to smush the fun a bit. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd much rather get a later start if it would result in immersing, interesting stuff going on.

That's about all that floats to mind right now. Overall, I like where this could be going, but it might be a good idea to look at some of the basic decisions that are being made with regards to events.

What do you guys think?
Shiri2005-04-03 23:35:55
I think rather that a certain amount of suspense is good, but it WOULD be neat if we had some sort of goal to work towards, even if it's something like "she'll be draining your nexi if you don't put stuff into it a lot" and...stuff. Makes us feel like we're doing something.

However, this has all been planned for quite a while, fairly probably, so suggesting things right now is just not gonna do anything. Unless horrendous bugs start appearing, and I can't see why they would, there's no reason for the Gods to wing anything for such a minor complaint.

In summary: A more appropriate poll would be "What can the name of that stupid events post be changed to, because it currently sounds like a bad sci-fi movie."
Shamarah2005-04-03 23:36:26
Well, it looks like something's happening...
Shiri2005-04-03 23:40:29
Hah. Now they can't get to the baby for the crow quest. OVERPOWERED! NERF GODS!

And...I just wanted to say, argh, Viravain's player not only watches sailor moon, but apparently too much hentai as well. sleep.gif

- blink.gif @ above post- Well then...

Even though I wasn't here for it... it sounds alright. The event itself isn't really what matters but it's what the players do with it. It's a grand oppurtunity for some characters to show... certain characteristics that otherwise may have gone unseen. -.-
Shiri2005-04-04 00:25:02
Except not, because it'll be drowned out in the flood of people trying to get themselves recognised, and no one individually will be noticed, more than likely. Heh.
Laysus2005-04-04 00:27:05
I loved it, even if "The Viravain Catastrophe" makes me think aging sci-fi movie (The Omega Strain! The Andromeda Incident! The Viravain Catastrophe!)
Unknown2005-04-04 00:30:36
I was not talking about getting your character recognized actually. There are lots of little things, beliefs and day to day characteristics that some well played characters hide that have been given a golden oppurtunity to come forth -.- If you dont know what I mean then that just means your particular character has none heh
Shiri2005-04-04 00:34:51
That's exactly what I mean, actually. The little things don't get noticed because people are focusing on the big things. It's true that my character doesn't have many of the little details you're talking about - at least none that I planned - but that doesn't mean I can't recognise them, heh. The problem is simply that anyone trying to use the event to display said details will either be swept under and have no one notice if they underplay it, or be seen as one of the ones trying to grab attention (and therefore have it ignored) if they overplay it.

Yes, I'm just being grumpy and cynical. No worries. You should try anyway, just don't be too disappointed.
Unknown2005-04-04 01:15:15
*laugh* I have no need to be disappointed. What I speak of has already been accomplished... I keep tight circles about my characters so those who actually matter notice.

Some constructive comments:
1) We managed to stick around the entire time, considering the entire length and breadth of the history, I'd say it's happening at a nice pace but one would have to be around the entire time to notice.
2) Definitive endings are so cliche. Since when do you see a sequence of events, and everything stops for a moment to come to somewhat of a conclusion so everyone can rest up for the next set.
3) Immersion isn't totally dependant on the world... the character being there on a regular basis creates the counterpart.
Erion2005-04-04 01:37:22
As to 3, he's reffering to the near hour break that Viravain disappeared and nothing happened, and we're all on the edge of our seat. Apparantly Viravain's writing the announce posts now. o.O
Desdemona2005-04-04 01:38:13
I loved the event, it soooo proves that even the Elder Gods are flawed... I hope from this day forward the mortals learn to question their deities even more.
Erion2005-04-04 01:39:38
biggrin.gif Here here, Desdemona!
Shiri2005-04-04 01:39:57
Anyway, we did get something to do. Namely pwn random hentai tentacle monsters.

Presumably more will be spontaneously popping up and we'll have to terminate them if and when, sooo.

Hey, Shiri, ever heard of H.P. Lovecraft? Go to the library. The Call of Cthulhu might be a good story to start on. (By the way, Cthulhu is pronounced... well... almost exactly like Kethuru, as it happens. halo.gif)
Shiri2005-04-04 01:41:48
I know, I know. I keep meaning to read those.

But I was going off the fact her avatars have both been sailor moon. So. happy.gif

EDIT: I bet you can't attribute THAT to some 11th century Norman legend or something like that. *peer*

EDITEDIT: Oh, and just in case you can, I'm going to bed now, so you'll just have to imagine the exasperated sigh and disbelieving face I'd be pulling if I could read your post.
Kaervas2005-04-04 01:43:11
I'm loving this so far, it has to be one of the best events I've taken part in my time MUDing. Kudos to the Divine for working so hard on it and coming up with something original, I can't wait to see what happens next. biggrin.gif
Silvanus2005-04-04 01:45:50
I want to know what mortals are supposed to do. It just seems like all the players are just fish flopping in the sea with no direction to go.
Desdemona2005-04-04 01:48:43
Maybe we need to place the pieces of the puzzle together. tongue.gif I am not sure, but I think we are acting pretty random, perhaps there are clues somewhere to tell us how to fix this whole thing but in our activity we haven't been able to find them.
