It's a pretty simple question. How can I find out what type of RAM I have? I need to get some more, but looking at my system specs it just says RAM. Is there a way I can find out without opening my tower and looking at it?

Peak into the little holes? tongue.gif

Ok, that was useless, but I dont know either, I'm not into that hardware thang, and I want my post count to go up.

And you pronounce my name wrong *peer*

I personally open up my tower and take a peek inside. Otherwise, it might tell you when the computer is booting up for that split second (the black screen with the white letters before the Windows splash screen), but I somehow doubt that it will tell you. If I recall, Device Managers doesn't show you either...

This may help you http://www.sisoftware.net/ .

Another handy little program is CPU-Z
Another way of doing is is looking up your mainboard on the makers site, usually tells you there what sort of RAM it takes.
Silvanus2005-04-10 18:58:46
Or, if you use XP, just look at system information.
Faethan2005-04-10 21:17:04
On XP, as Silvanus said, you just need to go Start|Control Panel|System and it'll tell you.

With those programs, can you find out all that information about your computer that hardout-computer-people post in forums, comparing each others computers. It's just like a bunch of alphanumeric characters tongue.gif, but can those programs do (roughly) that?

Another good trick is:
Start -> Run -> dxdiag
It's cheating, but it works good

I believe Manjanaia wanted type of RAM. SD or DDR.

But honestly out of all these programs you can use the most easiest way if you know what type of mainboard you have is just to look it up.

I am unsure about Sandra haven't used it myself. CPU-Z is what I use its just an exe and easy to read what you want to know
Manjanaia2005-04-11 19:09:14
Yeah I wanted type. System specs and dxdiag only showed me RAM, not SD or DDR or whatever.

I'm pretty sure it's DDR now. And I'm about to install a DVD RW so I'm just gonna take a peek inside. Thanks all. ShiriBot can incarcerate this now.

Belarc Advisor

Here ya go, this will analyze your Hardware, is completely free to run, and damn accurate. As for RAM it will tell you what you have, the number of ports you have, and how many are taken up, as well as anything else you could normally only find out by opening your computer's case.
Raezon2005-04-11 21:30:32
If you're gonna go buy more ram anyways, you're gonna have to open up the tower. A. you need to see if you have a slot open and B. you're gonna open it to install it, so just steal the stick out of the computer and take it to Best Buy.
Falasin2005-04-11 23:20:37
Meh, I still like the Berlarc Advisor, you can know if you don't have any open ports without wasting the time of opening the case. There's some site that you can put in your system info an they'll tell you what kind of RAM you need... I can't seem to find it, though.
Manjanaia2005-04-12 15:53:46
Yeah I played with that Advisor thing. I have a DDR slot open, apparently.
