Yeah, okay, it may seem a confusing question. But I'm curious. I "read" words in my head, but most people I talk to seem to "hear" them. Why is this?
Unknown2005-04-16 03:50:50
I can't answer your question anymore because I'm thinking about it.
I think I hear them sometimes, but it depends on the situation. If I'm casually looking at something it isn't like "Hmm! Hi-C!" I'll have to revisit the question later, but.. I think I'm a situational person.

Read. I guess that's where my pedantism comes from.
Shoshana2005-04-16 09:33:48
I hear words but then I'm much more of an aural person than a visual person, so it makes sense *shrug* It never actually occurred to me that some people read in their heads until someone brought it up in a thread here a while ago (At least I think it was here...). What do they do before they learn to read?
Shiri2005-04-16 13:33:27
...yeah, I dunno. I learnt to read really really early. Hmm.
And yeah, my history teacher said something about that, Zaltan. Apparently people who read in their heads spell better because they see the words -all the time.-

hear... I talk to myself too so watch out -.-
Nika2005-04-16 13:47:23
After thinking about it, (laugh), I hear in my head. And I hear when I read, too. Which is odd, I am more of a visual person and I learnt to read at a very young age too.

"The voices! The voices! Get them out of my head!!" you moan, holding your head
in pain.
in pain.
Sylphas2005-04-16 16:36:12
I hear them, yet I'm excellent at spelling and grammar. How's that work?
Shiri2005-04-16 16:37:25
It's just a trend.
Xavius2005-04-17 00:52:26
You read the words because you're a MUDing forum addict. You read more words than you hear!
I hear my thoughts. Which is good, because I argue with myself. Do you know how horribly inconvenient it would be to take the time to write a letter to myself in the middle of a heated debate? Totally ruins the spirit of the moment.

Heh. I've read words in my head since as far back as I can remember.
Daganev2005-04-17 03:47:41
I voted Hear, but when I translate things, or think in another language I read it.
Nika2005-04-17 09:32:58
*nod* I can read in my head if I'm concentrating a little harder, (if I'm at school for example), and sometimes I do when I'm remembering things, like something that someone has said. But it's still mostly hearing.
Shiri2005-04-17 11:29:45
A lot more people hear than read, then. Odd.
Shoshana2005-04-17 12:05:35
Nah, you're the odd one *duck*
Manjanaia2005-04-17 13:08:57
Most definately hear. I read something and hear it in my head. In fact it is impossible for me to do otherwise because I read something and immediately hear it in my head. So if I deliberately try to read by seeing the words in my head I have to read the words first anyway and hear them.
Sylphas2005-04-18 05:10:33
I attach meanings to the sound of words, not to how they're represented. If I read words instead of hearing them, I'd have to then translate them manually into sounds in my head before I understood them.
It's part of the reason I like Japanese more than French or Spanish. It's easier to learn (the words, not the alphabet. That's a whole different story) because it's easier to pronounce.

If Im speed reading I think in words, because they are faster to process and require less cognition. If Im just normally reading I hear it in my head. I also, when I do sleep, dream with subtitles, and think in text. Meh, MUDs make you weird.

I guess I hear the words. I listen to a ton of music, and when I'm not, the songs play out in my head repeatedly. I just got used to thinking by hearing. I never really visualized words in my head.
