Publicly Posting Common Skills

Back to The Polling Place.

This is in response to the debate about lusternia.org.

If I had known, I wouldn've have transed Tarot for World.

I'm glad I found out not to get Pollute (did anyways, wanted trans geomancy) and not to go to Reality.
Richter2005-04-18 22:06:48
No.

The only exceptions that I allow myself are:

1. Complete skill lists for myself. I just don't share them, per a discussion way back in beta.

2. I have the basic skill list (not in-depth files) of the tradeskills in the Merchant's Guild helpfiles, just so we can tell what all everyone can make.

Other than that, things such as posting guild skills ooc just ruins them.
Faethan2005-04-18 22:09:39
Only common skills should be posted. Guild skills should remain secret.
Unknown2005-04-18 22:18:16
I'm for getting common/guild skills shown since I was already given a list. Some of us can't buy 900 credits to Trans our guild skills or might want to know what to invest in properly.

Though I suppose some people wanting to keep guild skills a secret should be taken in consideration (Despite most guilds already having lists in their GHELP files. All it takes is a couple of alts to see what you want).
Tehn2005-04-18 22:39:27
I'm all for skills being publicly known.. I don't see how it kills roleplay, because anyone in the higher tier of fighting already knows everything they need to about opponents skills...through asking and testing with individuals. I also feel people should have a heads up on what they are investing in, my GODS is Puissance useless.... mad.gif
Richter2005-04-18 22:42:17
Yes... pussiance is useless.

But you should ask your guild what to learn. And getting tri-trans is always good, in any situation. happy.gif

No, but as an Occultist from Achaea, it's just buried in my mind that posting skills = bad.

I don't need every novice and their sister telling me what the next step up in my skill is. Sometimes, I don't even know.

And, hey. You can't ab skills you don't have in Lusternia for a reason, unlike Achaea.
Sylphas2005-04-18 22:54:21
Erion, I have all the Occie skills in my journal, along with a list of what each transmog gives you. The occultist RP is neat, but people know your skills anyway.

And still, why not common skills? That doesn't touch guild RP at all, since anyone can have them.
Erion2005-04-18 22:56:27
For similiar reasons. People don't seperate IC from OOC, and it's just tacky when a novice knows all of the discipline skills, and I don't. Even if I have trans discipline. tongue.gif
Sylphas2005-04-18 22:59:32
If you're gonna use that argument, then we need to ban the forums, IRC, AIM, etc, because there are always people who can't seperate the two. And I'd think skill lists would be the least of your worries. What about a 16 year old newb who knows more of the histories than you? Or someone who knows everything that happened with the Glomdoring plot, even though they just created their char today?
Erion2005-04-18 23:00:34
Your right, there should be more fears.

But just because I'm afraid someone's going to bomb my house doesn't mean I shouldn't be afraid that someone's going to bomb my dog. tongue.gif

One thing that I think should really NOT be done is skill usage syntax.

The last thing you need is new players being able to force you to do certain skills that arn't in the guild culture as possible attacks.
Sylphas2005-04-18 23:20:15
If someone bombs your house, it's a valid act of terrorism. If they bomb your dog, they're just griefers.

Agreed. In depth help files on skills shouldn't be posted, even if they would be cool to have.
Daganev2005-04-18 23:22:37
'valid act of terrorism' -- Wow

I am curious as to how many people who actually buy credits with real money are for the giving of skill names. Because it appears to me that those who have bought creditss don't like the lists being displayed.
Erion2005-04-18 23:25:00
But, if you look at just the ab list, you can still guess a skill's command.

Here's a few from Rituals:

Encipher
Populus
Rubeus
Tristitia
Carcer

ALL of those are Chant . Encipher has a target.
Tehn2005-04-18 23:29:29
If someone has the skill of force, then people in their guild would likely know and be willing to give out the syntax needed.

I would kill someone who released the NC skillsets, ICly or OOCly. No one keeps those seperate, when skills come into play.

HOHOHO, The kettle calls the pot black.
Tehn2005-04-18 23:31:27
I have 5 trans (about 1-1.5 additional trans in mixed skills) having bought credits, so yeah... I'm TOTALLY in favor of people being able to see skill lists. In fact, I recently acquired an entire list for personal use. They exist, and people can obtain them. Why should only certain people be able to?

*thump Erion* You can only guess it because you know that those skills work that way, but if you don't have any access to the skill at all you might not know if its Chant or Recite or maybe they have shortcuts like Tekura had shortcuts.
