At the moment, since salt and sulfur used for raising shields and tearing them down.. takes equilibrium, it is about the same as circle/pentagram and void/nullify, with apparently no difference at all.
Faeling, aslaran and furrikin have major tankiness problems, as any members of those races will have experience, but by making salt and sulfur take physical balance, instead of equilibrium, their problems would be fixed for at least a decent amount, AND salt and sulfur will become a viable trade commodity.
Furrikin are decently tanky -> lvl1 balance recovery, mediocrely fast to shield.
Aslaran are less tanky -> lvl2 balance recovery, pretty fast to shield.
Faeling are as resistant as wet paper -> lvl3 balance recovery, insane shielding.
It would fit perfectly, almost as if it's intended that way.

And, yeah, you're not exactly sprinkling it with your mind. Anyway, until then I'm happy to take salt and sulfur out of anyone's rift if it's overloading. I'll possibly even pay to take it off you.
Shiri2005-04-20 19:01:46
Furrikin are NOT decently tanky. Just more so than Aslaran/Faeling.
...but yes, do that.

I think this is one of those cases where communication between Estarra and Roark didn't have the intended outcome (like faeling not getting lvl3 faster balance right away)...and salt and sulfur really ARE supposed to take balance, and not equilibrium!
Terenas2005-04-20 19:08:52
No! I want to keep it using eq so I can sprinkle and save my 30 mana!
Thorgal2005-04-20 19:59:54
I don't think I caught the point of that, Terenas.
Anyway.. on an ic level, it doesn't make any sense to be sprinkling stuff with your mind, and on an ooc level, it'd help balance furballs, aslaran and faeling greatly.

That's a great idea.
Shamarah2005-04-20 21:02:42
This is a bad idea, because Faeling would probably shield faster than people can void. (Unless a cap was put on the speed so void, done by a normal eq race, is faster than Faeling salt.)
Unknown2005-04-21 01:15:53
I always assume it WOULD be like that...
Given how low Circle/Pentagram/Void/Nullify are in the Magics, there's no reason why anyone would use salt or sulphur if there was no speed difference...

Saves the 50 mana.
Unknown2005-04-21 02:08:20
No, this is not a good idea. Faelings would shield faster then raze for crying out loud. Aslaran and Furrikin would still be much faster then void/nullify.
What they should do, is cause Circle/Pentagram and Nullify/Void cost more mana, like 200-300 mana or more. Then the salt/sulfur would be viable and sought after, for the 0 mana use.

Athana2005-04-21 02:15:14
Yay. Then maybe people would take some of the salt and sulfur I'm giving away because its dumb to waste pocketbelts on them.
Unknown2005-04-21 02:27:24
Well the salt just blackmail, did i say blackmail, i mean talk to your TM of the cooking Cartels, make em make recipes that use Salt in them, thus salt cured, Sulphur well... dunno bout that, i dont think Sulphur tastes that good
Estarra2005-04-21 02:33:49
Salt and sulfur take no mana to use.

Right. But the difference between no mana and 50 mana is inconsequential, is what we are saying.

Oh, it's only 50 mana? *Makes note to increase cost*
Shiri2005-04-21 02:42:50
Whee, go Estarra!
Elryn2005-04-21 02:46:31
I seem to remember someone suggesting that lowmagic/highmagic each have one of shield/breaking shield abilities, but not both. Then salt and sulfur become essential commodities (well, except for knights, but that is ok). I thought that idea had merit.
This change would be fantastic for Faelings, but I'm not sure if we should be able to simply halt attackers entirely.

Yeah I've been trying to idea that for a really long time. I reaally hope it gets used in recipes. As for sulfur...hmm
Nyla2005-04-21 03:02:25
Maybe there could be a skill in arts that turns salt into gem commodities..
