A lot of people keep the large amounts in the bank and a few 100k in their pack for immediate spending.

I never keep over 3k in my pack anymore. I rarely even leave good stuff in it - I mainly use it for sorting out the menial crap in my inventory, or a place to quickly stuff gold I might drop if I think I'll die.
