Basically, the end all, and be all of my arguments -towards- MU*'ing, is that I have insomnia.
And this keeps me from/forces me to dislike normal 'everyday' activites, like sports, and excercising, purely based on the fact that over half the time, I can't do about what timezone I'm in.
Pretty much, I'm asking how you guys deal with it.
At the moment, I'm a bit of a 'stoner', just to deal with the fact I can't sleep.
Alcohol is a bit of a problem too, I guess.
Sucks to be me.

Quit any form of drugs. Don't play computer for several weeks. Really wind down. Healthy diet. Hot baths and aromatherapy and junk like that. And have a really comfy bed.
Silvanus2005-05-19 20:57:01
This is what you do:
First you go out and buy one of these;
Then, you bring that to one of these that is yours:
Then, you get in this position:
Till it looks like this:

Yeah Silvanus' emphasis is right. Computer must go, one way or another. If you can afford it/can get time off work or whatever, a holiday somewhere quiet with no PC would help. Preferably somewhere with fresh air. That should weaken the need for Lusternia. While you're away, get a friend to take your computer and hide it somewhere until you get 7 good nights of sleep at least. In a row. Then you begin to resume normal life, but much less computer. Seriously.
Nayl2005-05-19 21:11:35
Well, I actually don't play Lusty until I've had a nap, at least for an hour.
So, yea, and drugs I take just to sleep.
Really should get sleeping pills, and only computer on weekends.
Le Sigh.

Sleeping pills are bad. Try something more natural. You can get natural sleeping tablety things. Lavender on your pillow helps. And drinking warm milk.
Amaru2005-05-19 21:26:57
It's a state of mind, I get it in bursts. Try hypnosis.
Manjanaia2005-05-19 21:27:51
Yeah what Amaru says is true. I often can't sleep randomly, especially if I have a lot to think about.
Terenas2005-05-19 21:28:49
Never had insomnia so can't say I feel your pain. Then again, I just turn my music on really low at night and drift to sleep even when I don't need it. Works pretty well for me.
And shouldn't this thread be in the Real World section?

Doesn't bother me much, i'm usually up at 6am and I don't hit the bed until 2ish or later but I dislike sleep anyway. If i'm working on something time sensitive i've been known to keep myself awake for a couple of days at a time then crash for six hours. Also i've found that if I go to bed early and get more then four hours of sleep, I wake up a cranky SOB and stay that way for most of the day.
Annoys the hell out of my wife, i'll be tinkering around in the living room at like 4:30 and she'll get up because I made to much noise and ask me where I get the energy. Then again she goes to bed at 9 o'clock and wakes up grumpy....Or I make her grumpy not sure there
EDIT: Been a long day so I rambled quite a bit, and probably misspelled quite a few things

Nayl brings up a good point, didn't they make pipes not cure insomnia anymore? Or only last? And if it doesn't cure it anymore, how do you cure it?
Acrune2005-05-20 00:11:13
I think there was an affliction such then if you had the affliction and insomnia at the same time, you'd cure insomnia instead of the affliction. So they fixed it.
Aajen2005-05-20 00:54:00
Well somking something cures insomnia (well it really makes it worse, but it doesn't feel that way, and it sure as hell won't make me stop), but it's not coltsfoot...
Anyway, I used to have some really bad insomnia, I'd have to stay up for like 36 hours just so I could sleep, it felt really unhealthy... so what I did is quit my boring office job that made me want to sleep even though I couldn't, and got a job working outside... actually that sounds really similar to the plot of Office Space (minus the arson and grand larsony). Now I work 8 hours a day basicly moving stuff from one place to another or going school for 8 hours straight and I'm beat as hell when I get home. In short get an outside job, it'll -really- suck at first but it will probably cure you eventually.
Office jobs are the cause of every disease known to man (especially mental illness), or at least make most of them worse.........
You could also make an imaginary friend and start a fight club...

Make sure your house is freakin' freezing, but put an electric blanket on your bed and set it to the highest setting. That always puts me out, especially in summer when the heat is bloody awful. (Fans everywhere!)
Morik2005-05-20 06:50:34
Exercise. I know, you said you can't, and I'd like to know why. But one of the cures for RL insomnia is physical exhaustion. At that point you can tell whether its a chemical-related issue (ie, your brain really honestly has trouble hitting state=sleep), or whether you're just not physically tired.
You don't need to do much. Half an hour in the morning to waken you up, half an hour in the evening. Get a bicycle. Go for a ride. Not only will you feel more alert, but you'll have a better chance at sleeping.
Don't eat huge amounts of food in the evening. Evening time isn't for massive feasts. Evening time is for some low-carbohydrate food (Eg vegetables). You won't find it easy to sleep if your body decides it needs to spend time metabolising food. Eat a lot during the morning, eat ok during lunch, eat light during dinner.
Stop the drugs. I know, it'll be hard. But you won't find it easy to cure insomnia if you are messing with your own brain chemisty. Sleeping tablets aren't going to help you in the long term as they also do nifty things to your head.
There's been studies showing that you want to be warm when you sleep. Not cold. Especially your feet. Something involving London Heathrow and people who try to sleep on the benches. Its an interesting read, really. In any case, try to keep your extremities warm. If you live in a hot climate, don't go overboard trying to stay ice cold. It won't help.
Above all. Go and see a couple of GPs. Not one, more than one. There's a wide variety of opinions on insomnia. Long term drugs aren't the way. :-) Insomnia, in a lot of cases, is due to lifestyle and you will find you need to change it. Don't fear it, it can be quite fun.
Adrian, an insomniac.

it cures insomnia /last/, right?
Shiri2005-05-20 06:56:08
Yes, Morik has it right.
Thorgal2005-05-20 09:31:12
Yarr, Morik really does have it right, just try any excercises you're capable of, untill you're sweating and panting, then take a hot bath (not a shower) and try sleeping without sleeping pills.
Most sleeping pills actually suck for sleeping, they prevent a deep and calm sleep, it's better to take either nothing, or some -small- dose of painkillers instead, like codeine.
