Maybe have the races like Mugwump, Aslaran, Krokani, etc, that do not specialize, have some form of long, drawn out series of quests, to get a racial specialization? There'd be two, one for magi/guardian, and one for warriors. And when you forgot geomancy/aquamancy/druidry/wicca, or whatever stag/crow/sacraments/necromancy for the warriors, you lost said specialization, and would have to repeat the quest.
Instance. Aslarans train in the Shanthmark Lodge, to become better warriors. Thus, through a long, drawn-out series of quests for an aslaran warrior/magi (it would be different for each), involving them meditating, training etc, like the NPCs claim to have, before reaching their final stage of meditation, to become true aslaran warriors.
Just a stupid thought. Maybe Lukovic could train warriors, and some Djarrakh mage (pops out of nowhere!) could train magi/guardians?
Again, just a stupid thought.

Ooers! That'd be so neat. I'd love that actually, but the poor furrikins would end up having to farm for theirs in estelbar. That would be a good idea though, especially if it was something that could be finished bit by bit instead of having to worry about someone coming behind you and getting the items or whatever, so you can't finish. Like the Caer Witrin quest in Achaea? ^___^
Erion2005-06-03 04:40:48
Furrikin have a commune

While it would be wonderful to have those sort of quests, I believe the intent of specialization is to allow for a race to fit a particular organization perfectly, so that you can choose any class of the org and be assured of having well above average suitability to it. Also, switching between classes does not require a change of race or roleplay.
I don't think any quest external to an organization would fit these aims.

Personally, I like it. I doubt it'll ever happen, but I like it.

Instead of doing this, maybe have still have the quests but the said person who completes the quest first in the new month, gains like some sort of cool race on artifacts for that month. Sorta like the champion artifacts but crapper i guess, like Knights might make them swing faster. Magi and Druids would give maybe a 10% increase in their staff/cudgel damage, Guardians would be able to invest a new skill into their angel/demon and Wiccans could get like stronger Avatar Fae, since their quests would relate to the Night/Moon Avatars, Druids would have their aspects, Magi their Elemental Lords, Guardians their Supernals and Warriors could have maybe their villages. But these quests could -only- be given out by a non specialized race, maybe?
Unknown2005-06-03 09:30:30
The point of the non-specialized races is largely that they can go anywhere. That said, I think that 3-4 of the less commonly used races need some upgrades, but otherwise making every race have a potential specialization would take away from the feel of specializations overall, and everyone of said race would feel they have to get the specialization. I'm assuming that the specialization would bias them towards one side.

We need that 10% upgrade on cudgel anyway!
Erion2005-06-03 16:22:31
Cudgel is insane for bashing period. Doesn't need an upgrade. And if you make it a nasty series of long, drawn out, heavily randomized quests, people will be less inclined to do it, versus just getting your arse out of Novicehood. And they could be relatively sub-standard specializations.
I mean, look at the Tosha quest. Who honestly finishes that quest, anymore? It gives a perm bonus to your max life, I'm told. That's a LOT better than 5k gold.

Half the time, I might as well use my sickle as my cudgel. I tell you, neither have ever been terribly good when I've used em.
Erion2005-06-03 18:30:11
Cudgels are crappy vs players. Cudgels have the right damage type for mobs, though. They deal a crapload.
Sylphas2005-06-03 18:46:34
Cudgel and sickle seem to do the same amount of damage to players, discounting bleeding. They're just defended against in different ways.
Richter2005-06-03 19:50:30
Was this topic about cudgels, or specializations?
Anyway, I believe the point was so that Merians get the biggest boost where they should be living, and are frowned upon living other places (sorry, but those Glomdoring Merians still irritate me, hah). The same is for the other ones, Viscanti are best-suited to Magnagora, and shouldn't really be living other places (save for Glomdoring -maybe-).
I think it was an an effort to save RP a bit, and create some possible racial tension. As cool as this idea sounds, it would effectively destroy what they were trying to do.
I do like the arti idea though, for the racial quests. I miss unique quests, like getting the bellows/hp boost in Lusternia, or the gryphon.

omg zombie gryphon teh winz.
Richter2005-06-03 20:14:17
I don't remember a zombie gryphon!
Shiri2005-06-04 00:06:22
It was in forestwatch. Man, even I remember that one.
Suhnaye2005-06-05 03:30:36
This'd be pretty sweet...
I do think the quests should be really really difficult, kinda like the tosha quest, that way not everyone even bothers to do em... It should be something people do to gain honour, recognition, and respect, not something they do just for the stats...
Also, I think the stats from this should be slightly higher than the specialization bonus's people get with guilds... The difference should be that ALL races have these, if they don't do the quests, the guild based specializations still get small bonus's, but if they go through the specialization quest, it brings em up to a bit higher point than with guild specialization... Also, it could then be encouraged by all guilds and citys and communes... All sorts of things could be done to encourage it, and it would be an AWSOME RP tool.
And why does it seem like this post is getting burried...

i don't think this is necessary since the races have been upgraded recently
Erion2005-06-09 17:41:12
Given this thread's not been posted on since prior to the update, you think?
Unknown2005-06-09 17:45:54
that's why I said it isn't necessary anymore Ok, I failed to include "anymore" in my post but that's what I mean
