DISCLAMER - This is not going to go in game, as i don't trust peoples OOC/IC sense (sorry guys).

However, I was curious of what people think of betrayal. Not just quit glomdoring -> go join serenwilde, but more well played out, developed plots. Any oppinions? Good? Bad?

From an OOC perspective, if the character says to do something, doing it is just being honest to their roleplay. This gets muddled when we differentiate between the character and the player, and start to opinion whether a shift in character was motivated internally to the character (i.e. supposed good roleplay) or internally to the player (i.e. you did it because you wanted to). I think that differentiation is bull censor.gif, since characters do not play themselves, and however much we try to be true to them as distinct from us, they remain extensions of ourselves...therefor, what is true for us is true for them, what motivates us motivates them.

It's like saying your hand is separate from your body. In a contrived way, it's true, but if you hit someone, they're not going to blame your hand. Hand and body, body and person, are one.

Relating to any element of your character, then, including betrayal...if you feel it is the right thing to do, then it's the right thing to do. If you want to roleplay a betrayal, I wouldn't agonize over it.

As far as how other characters react to that, though...if I believe that the Taint is Truth, and you betray the Taint, then there is no ground for forgiveness or compassion, ever. If perceptions like that bother you, then I would back away from engendering them.

We're here to enjoy our stay, after all.

Like Melan said. If it fits the character, all well and good.

If it's obviously OOCly motivated, that's when it becomes shatty RP, and questionable.

And there's the inevitable prick who'll take IC OOC, sadly.

A good betrayal in the morning gets the loins moving, as my great aunts mother-in-law's sister used to say.

Betrayal is fun, but only if you've a great reason. Unless you're trying to get into Celest. If you're even THINKING of that, just don't bother.

Betrayal is an interesting story element if it's roleplayed well. It's just as uninteresting when it's roleplayed poorly. It's like a magnifier, it makes good RP better and bad RP worse.

However, it's also very, very, very overdone.

It depends a lot on how far you want to go with your betrayal. It is one thing to tell your friends in the opposing org about posts, things that happen or where teams are and such but it is something completely different when you try and work your way up to a leading position and then maybe steal gold and credits from your guild or whatever.
As Gwyl said, every kind of betrayal has been done countless times already, though that is not necessarily a reason for not doing it.
But you should consider your actions. What will happen to your char when your betrayal gets discovered? For many people, I am admittedly among them, there is a saying: Once a traitor, always a traitor. So you should carefully consider.......on the other hand I noticed that many here forget quickly or just don't care.

My characters have never betrayed any organizations they have been affiliated with, in Achaea or Lusternia. I just don't find a need to burn all your bridges, if you want to leave, just leave, picking a new loyalty is far different from renouncing and betrying your old ones. Or maybe I'm just a pacifist that doesn't like to get involved in conflicts. closedeyes.gif

Betrayal can be a cool aspect to play out, but very few people accept it at all. The wohle organisation will label you traitor and give you too much stick for it.

Of course those things will be ooc motivated and should be. If you want to move to another org, you decide that ooc. Just simply doing it isn't right though, you have to think and plan it so that your character can be accepted as having made that progression, roleplaying it well.

The question is... do you leave as a treacherous snake everyone you knew wants you dead, or do you leave as a man with the respect of your old fellows? Betrayal itself may be one of the most despised things to do for some folks, especially if they are loyal dogs. So I'd advice to "betray" in a way were you don't leave with the complete enmity of those you leave behind.
