Hexes is lovely. But I don't suppose you'd add a way to whammy an allhex?

I smell a batch of +1 bakin' in Yrael's kitchen.
That said, overpowered nerf hexes. Drop the allhex, drop the whammy, give 'em an ability to whispering madness/Unnameable them.

Drop allhex and give us whispering madness? Good, Erion! I have my custom title now (Meh, screw you.) so no more +1 cookies.
Acrune2005-06-14 14:10:16
Ew, that'd be a scary thing to add.

What did whispering madness do?

You had to have 3 insanities, then you could be afflicted with whispering madness. Then, those three insanities could not be cured, until Madness was cured. If someone followed it up with Unnameable, you could not cure Madness, thus could not cure insanities. It was a nasty combination, although occultists rarely used it, for fear of people getting too used to it.
But, on Achaea, when you saw people shouting a cliched line about how it cannot be true, that's what it was. Supposedly, the Occultist "enlightened" individuals.

I saw the shouting crap, although for like 40 IG years I thought it was just some retarded inside joke, until I finally got a brooch of Thoth and got suspicious. xD
But okay, hmm. So what was the cure for madness? And what was the cure for unnameable? And how do you enlighten? (Or is that unnameable?) I'm just all curious, PM me if you want.
Erion2005-06-14 14:29:31
I think Madness was a smokeable cure, and Unnameable/Enlighten, same thing. The ability was called Enlighten - Unnameable was another ability that would, I think, give insanities if it was spoke/visioned, and someone was not deaf/blind.
You may have needed to do 3 insanities/madness/unnameable/enlighten, actually. It's been so long since I was an occultist.

Enlighten was second to trans, I think. Obviously pretty nasty, since it can't be cured.

Syntax: UNNAMABLE SPEAK, UNNAMABLE VISION
From your studies of occult lore, you can use karma to actually speak the
Unnamable's name or cause a vision of the Unnamable to appear to everyone in a location. For any who are not trained in occult studies, those hearing the name or seeing the vision will be afflicted with various insanities.
Syntax: WHISPERINGMADNESS
Having one of the following insanities: dementia, stupidity, confusion,
hypersomnia, paranoia, hallucinations, impatience, addiction, recklessness, and masochism, weakens the mind enough to afflict that person with the dreaded curse of whispering madness. Once afflicted, none of those insanities can be cured until whispering madness is cured first.
You pass your hand in front of Szanthax. He trembles and his eyes widen in
terror.
Syntax: ENLIGHTEN
Perhaps the cruelest curse imaginable, you can reveal the occult mysteries to a non-initiate as you have learned it. Their minds must be sufficiently open for the revelation to be received. In other words, the target must have whispering madness as well as three (or more) of the following insanities: dementia, stupidity, confusion, hypersomnia, paranoia, hallucinations, impatience, hypochondria, recklessness, masochism, agoraphobia, anorexia, loneliness, claustrophobia, hypochondria, lover's effect. If such is the case, you may give that target the revelation of what the nature of the universe is as you see it, which will unfortunately make their insanities permanent until death.
You place both hands on either side of Szanthax's head and stare straight into
his eyes. Summoning all your knowledge of the occult mysteries, you will your
knowledge into Szanthax's mind.
You see Szanthax Darrion, Devout of Light shout, "No, it cannot be true! I
cannot accept it! I beg of you to make it stop!"

Okay, so, that's what it was. 3 insanities -> Madness -> Enlightenment.
I used to whore tactics like unnameable speak/vision -> Madness -> Enlightenment. I wonder if Estarra built the occultist guild? I know Servelan (Sorry for the misspelling, kinna tired) was the founder. But the karma system/power have a lot of similiarities.
I also loved to pact golgatha in the middle of crowded interesctions.

With an inhuman rending sound, as if existence were being torn asunder, a pit begins to open in the ground below you. Pulsing impossibly, it seems not to be a splitting of the earth so much as a splitting of reality. Finally it is done, and a gaping maw of midnight and sulpher lies before you.
Teresina is drawn screaming into the Pit of Golgotha.
The Pit of Golgotha suddenly flares in size!

That shizzat was awesome. Especially when people are sitting at NoT or Crossroads, and just, BAM, Golgotha. Then pact Xen. like a bizzitch and run.
Erion2005-06-14 15:08:51
So, Ceres. Should we give them a version of it?
Yea, we should. Right in hexes. Bam!

Enlighten was fun. I mostly used it on easy people though, when I wanted something of a challenge from them. It was alway funny when I enlightened them and they got away anyways and just floundered around the arena until someone finished them off.
But I'd hate to see it in Lusternia. I dont even think it'd work too well. Whispers and enlighten would both need to have pretty decent power costs, so by the time you got enough power back to pull an enlighten, the target would have to be pretty bad to still have whispers.

Back on topic.
I went Moondancer in the test server and tried out Hexes, it was incredibly fun, though a bit annoying at times to use, especially with all the prepping up. I'd prefer runes for instant afflictions, but Doublewhammy and Whammy was pretty sweet. I locked Rakor (who doesn't have focus mind) pretty much instantly everytime with Doublewhammy. I'd hate to see it in the hands of a capable fighter nowaday, aside from Tuek who was already deadly before the Hexes upgrades.

Runes is instant, but it's selection of afflictions is much worse, we can't mask them, and they're just not as versatile.
Thorgal2005-06-14 21:25:28
Runes is also, unlike hexes, hella expensive.
Unknown2005-06-14 22:54:49
It's too bad that the coolest occultist abilities didn't get ported over.

One reason I'd never go tarot or runes, right there. I hate having to pay gold for my own abilities, it's sucky.
