I just felt like stating my utter loathing for modern day "beautiful" and what it does to people, especially teenage girls. The lack of self esteem is creates is just unbelievable, and I can't believe so many supermodels actually confuse themselves with "rolemodel"
Anyway, this comes from a conversation with a certain person, who will remain nameless, and inspired me to write something..
Vicious lies,
That’s all they are,
The words that sound around you,
The thoughts you think to yourself.
Vicious lies,
That’s all they are,
Those images on your TV screen,
Those daydreams of teenage boys.
Vicious lies,
Are not worth your tears -
Only sweet words whispered in the dark,
And tender caress upon your soft skin,
Should ever be the cause for a sigh.
But instead they say
Where beauty lies
Is in the eye of the beholder
But I say it simply lies
And that the cherished concept
Those frightened butterflies
Sparked in your smile and rosy blush,
Nurtured in your heart and fragile soul,
Enough to make hearts skip a beat
Is well alive in you.
The mirror isn’t reality,
That magazine isn’t beauty,
Those catcalls are no serenade,
And in the midst of such vicious lies,
You are truth,
And I am simply awed.
Meh, a bit rough and not all that spectacular in my opinion, but the frustration kicked me into writing-mode.
What is this world coming to when incredibly beautiful girls think they are hideous? When they think they have to have the longest legs or biggest breasts or bounciest/shiniest hair? It aggrivates me to no end, when I see, even on my college campus, such prissy pampered princesses, and, even worse, the guys who drool over them. So many amazing people are shattered by growing up in this sort of culture, and it simply isn't fair.
Grrr to our modern media.
Bastards.
Edit: Bah, the formating is messed up (certain lines should be indented) but I am not going to be bothered with it.

It's a $$$$ society, and you girls with low self esteem will buy any worthless 'fix' they can, be it for hair, face, etc.
Unknown2005-06-22 14:46:44
I think you're forgetting the guys here. It's amazing what a male will do to validate his manhood.
Ialie2005-06-22 14:50:09
Too true.
They are slowly working on the men

actually Ialie, initially for the men, viagra and such were created for men who suffered impotence. Any idea how bad sex can be if you can't get it up? Generally sex CAN'T happen.
Overall though yea, society is bending us over backwards making us feel bad.
Take me for example, the 'healthy weight' for someone 6'2 at most is 202 lbs. which I could manage just BARELY, but I wouldn't have any muscle in my torso and probably have to lose some of my leg muscle as well as the chub that I admit I have.
Some people just aren't built for being thin twigs and either way it's not healthy, not that people ever listen to the doctors whose entire research centers on human health, nooooo, they listen to the bimbo supermodel with an IQ of a sack of bricks who spews forth the bile that is written for her.

I think society hasn't found a balance. Stick people are wierd-looking unhealthy, fat people are disgusting and unhealthy, and so apparently, the first alternative is better.
I'll admit though, I'd much rather date a stick than a fat person.
ALSO, if you look at the stars today, many of the women are healthy, "skinny" (because Americans are fat, so our standards are effed), and have killer abs.
Ohmygosh don't let our young women work out!
I work in a call center. I swear to god, 95% of the people here are obeese. Girls want to look up to stars for their body types? Awesome? Rolemodels? Bad choice.

I don't find fat people disgusting, and find stick thin celebrities as more of a problem because people try to copy them.
Richter2005-06-22 18:01:33
Well stop trying to copy them, it's as unhealthy as eating too much and no exercising.
Manjanaia2005-06-22 18:03:12
I don't try to copy them, I'm well aware of the ideal weight. You seem unaware to the mental conditions related to eating disorders, which the media very much worsen.

as unhealty as smoking, drinking, sex with multiple partners and countless other things.

The base of the problem is not thin or obese, most people would not argue with the fact that being overweight is not good for a person, it stands from the fact that young girls and women are given a sense that if they are not overall perfect it’s not good enough .. Perfect bodies, hair, skin, aging is now seen as ugly. Applying anti aging cream at 20 to make sure you’ll look radiant for the rest of your life… I could go on for pages on the stuff the media is telling we should look and use. I find it very disturbing when I see young girls not even 10 years of age saying they are fat (when they are not by far btw). This can also lead to eating disorders although probably not the only factor, but it’s very sad to see children as young as 7 not feeding themselves… it’s pressure to be what we see everyday. We lost sense of liking, loving whom we are inside and out with what was given to us with fake images of prefectness .. On the other side the Dove company as taken a new publicity, which moves away from the perfect image and shows everyday women and girls .. Nice for a change! In hopes more company follow in there steps.
Saikado2005-06-22 18:31:21
hey! I don't drink too often!!! And I do exercise, it's a good 30-40 minute walk to the college which I end up walking 4 times a day.
Amaru2005-06-22 19:03:45
There is a general, natural idea of what beautiful is, which I don't think can be changed. That includes ideas of weight and such. What I hate is when girls who are naturally beautiful feel they aren't without fake tans and dyed blonde hair. Nothing is more revolting to me than dyed blonde hair.
Saikado2005-06-22 19:06:50
see, if I died my hair blonde, it would only be to prime it for a non-natural hair color
Manjanaia2005-06-22 19:08:43
Well, I think dyed blonde hair can be nice, it's Vicky Pollard types that are not good.
Amaru2005-06-22 19:12:16
It'd be typical of me to blame America, but I think there's a certain Western obsession with image which has got out of hand. And it affects most of us, often without realising.
Amaru2005-06-22 19:20:21
Here's a great example of what I mean.
Before:
After:
I can't see how anyone wouldn't prefer her natural fair, beautiful skin and natural hair colour to the fake.. blondey brown streaked hair and fake tan which doesn't suit her. What a waste.

Manjanaia2005-06-22 19:23:00
I agree. I just don't see the need for this unnatural 'beauty'.
