Shortswords

I was just curious what the upper stat-range on shortswords was. Can their speed equal that of a decent rapier?

For RP purposes I was sort of interested in having my char use a rapier and a shortsword, but, if I can't get the shortsword anywhere near the rapier's speed, I'll have to nix that idea.

Also, as a human, will I be able to bash with that sort of combination? I mean, I know people manage it with dual rapiers, but that seems to be mostly aslaran with their increased speed. Should I maybe just pick up two broadswords for bashing and have my rapier/shortsword for RP and group-PvP where it won't matter quite as much?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I made a pair of 180 speed shortswords for myself a long time ago, that's probably on the upper end of what you can get without doing intensive reforges.

As a base balance race, your shortsword is likely to be about a second slower on recovery than your rapier. As for hunting, your strength and your swing time are the most important factors...don't worry too much about having lower damage on your weapons.

Hm. Thank you very much. I was just curious because I currently have a broadsword with 193 speed.. so.. I assumed a shortsword would be able to match that, given they are supposedly faster.

193 speed on a broadsword is very high, something you'd see maybe once every 50 forges. The average hovers around 160. The trick to it all is that rapiers often go above 240 speed without difficulty, which is where you'll start to notice a visible difference in swing time compared to a broad or short sword. At the slower speeds, it doesn't really matter unless you are a faster balance race, they'll swing about the same, with possibly *just* enough delay between them to get a prompt message between the arm recoveries.

I have a pair of fullered blue steel broadswords with 162 damage each, and I'm sure they took quite a bit of forging. I also used to have a pair of iron military broadswords with 150 damage and I know for a fact they took at least 30 min real time to get that high.

30 minutes is nothing. I've heard of forgers like Daevos working 2+ hours straight on a weapon to get it exactly right.

Actually, that was just the time I spent there. The initial forging process must have been a long undertaking. One reason why I would rather rely on my mates for forgecraft. I've just got too little patience to sit about banging primatively on things. Though, by contrast, combat isn't much different. doh.gif

Forging triggers are your friend. Marcalo reads comics while reforging.
