Pondering an Inaccuracy

I was just reading through the histories and found something odd, and was just curious if the maps we have are simply inaccurate (i'm talking about the graphical one)

In the histories, Castle Djarrakh holds the Taint back from moving west, which protected the Ballach Swamp.. however.. on the graphical map, and even the more room-by-room ones, Castle Djarrakh is west of the Swamp.. meaning, its magical net couldn't have protected the swamp as is.

Is the map just wrong? As in, does the Gloriana river rest farther to the east and simply bend west? Or is this just a plot-hole that I should ignore and just nod along with, like good ol fashion Doublespeak?

Either way, I don't care.. I was just curious.

Its when the Emperor's army has already moved out from Gaudiguch. They are trying to figure out how to get to Celest, since they can't approach the Crysta Sea from the south or use the Shallach gates due to the Taint.

The ur'Guard commander suggests the Ballach Swamp, then the Taurian matriarch says the taint was close to the Swamp, so it was probably overtaken already. The Krokani leader tells them the Ballach is safe because they raised a defence at the castle which was keeping the Taint from moving west.

Here, i'll just post the part tongue.gif

QUOTE("(31) Memoirs of Lolly Pringle: The Taint")
The Emperor was determined to reach the Isle of Celest but there was no way to approach the Crystal Sea from the south without going through the Taint. He called a war council together.

Besides the Dark Council, who were cloaked in their dark robes, and the Emperor, whose monstrous form was still hidden behind the illusory glamour, the council included Captain Galvorg of the ur’Guard, Lord Trogak of the krokani, Packleader Oolit of the loboshigaru, and Meldoonia Sher, a matriarch of the Taurian Mercenaries. The Emperor presented the situation simply: they needed to get to Celest at all possible speed.

“What about the Shallach tunnels?” Meldonia asked Captain Galvorg.

“Taint has the tunnels,” he said. “We entered tunnels many times, but orclach never returned. It is closed to us. We should head through Balach Swamp.”

“Balach is at the borders of the Taint last I heard,” said Meldonia. “Its most likely infected by now."

“We can go through the Balach Swamp,” said Lord Trogak, his huge, great eye blinking slowly at the Emperor. “Djarrakh holds back the Taint from moving west. Balach is not infected.”

I thought Balach was like, the site of some of the Holy Celestine Empires previous experiments, and already screwed up? I don't know, but what your saying (your point, not your post *grin*) makes no sense at all.

Where did it say the wall was a straight line or ran perfectly north-south? Anyway, the histories aren't based on first-hand eyewitness accounts, but rather spurious and hysterical reports during a very chaotic time. cooldance.gif

My point is that Balach shouldn't have been protected if the defense raised by Djarrakh was anywhere close to a straight line. It was just me wondering if either the account is inaccurate, or the map. Makes sense to me.

Lolly could see the defensive net put up by Castle Djarrakh, and its his memoir.. doesn't that make him a first-hand eyewitness?

However, I'll accept that answer! Though, it does remind me of that "Do a little sidestep" politician skit from "The Best Little Whore House in Texas" tongue.gif Especially with that smiley, lol.

Another odd inaccuracy in the histories.

All throughout the first part of the histories, Rowena is called 'Rowena Darkshade'. However, in chapter 5 of the first part of the history of the Holy Celestine Empire she is suddenly called 'Rowena Nightshade'. She then reverts to Nightshade.

QUOTE
INVITEES PRESENT:
Princess Marilynth Ladantine, representative of the Imperial Star Council
Tarrawen Falgirn, Dwarven Ambassador to the King of the Mountains
Brennan Stormcrow, High Druid of the Gloriana Forest Conclave
Rowena Darkshade, High Priestess of the Night Coven, Gloriana Forest Commune

QUOTE
The Board recognized the delegation from the Gloriana Commune. High Priestess Rowena Darkshade strongly objected to further

And then...

QUOTE
His Wisdom, Bhodifucius Xiim! Even the doom-and-gloom High Priestess from Gloriana, Rowena Nightshade, cracked a smile when she tried to convince

Her last name is again mentioned in the section 'Scourge of the Taint'.

QUOTE
And I, Rowena Darkshade, High Priestess of the Night Coven, stood proud and tall next to the Great Ravenwood Tree, certain in the powers of the Great Spirits that

QUOTE
Am I not as powerful as I am glorious? Am I not Rowena Darkshade, Mistress of All She Surveys!

And then, in 'Fall of the Celestine Empire'...

QUOTE
In a clearing was High Priestess Rowena Nightshade

QUOTE
Rowena Nightshade, however, was still stunningly beautifu

QUOTE
"And if the ur'Guard and Tainted are together, we must assume he has allied with Rowena Nightshade."

QUOTE
As they came closer, I saw that upon the lead giant crow was Rowena Nightshade

QUOTE
Rowena Nightshade set the Undead Emperor down

So she starts off as Darkshade, switches once, goes back, and continues calling herself 'Darkshade' even after she is tainted UNTIL the next section of the histories. Huh?

Another odd note: Brennan's last name remains STORMCROW throughout the histories, which is funny, because that's sort of a prophecy. The lightning storm of Mother Night's that destroyed the Master Ravenwood is also what made Raven become Crow, if I remember correctly.

Estarra isn't perfect. Remember, dwarves were called Clangorum at the time of the Taint Wars - it wasn't until well after the coming of Estarra that the Basin all called dwarves dwarves.

Yet, the history calls them humans.

Lovely easter eggs, honest - but Estarra's only human. tongue.gif

I wouldn't put it past Rowena to intentionally sow confusion about her own identity.

Yeah, that's it, that works.
