I just thought of something. I had much more fun as an Aetolian nobody, than a Lusternian something-of-a-recognized-persona.
Why is this?
Because in Aetolia, I went around from place to place, exploring, bashing a bit, and learning about the history of the place. I read books, played chess, and did other such things.
Now what do I do? I hang around Glomdoring, Deepnight, and generally do nothing.
I'm not sure if its because I've gotten used to sitting around and doing nothing, or what... I've also noticed it with some other people. I really miss questing, exploring, goofing off a bit, and being -able- to be a hermit (a gem of cloaking might help that).
And you know, I just might have to do all of that, and I'm going to invite you all to do the same. What percentage of the world have I actually been to? Am I always confined to Glomdoring, waiting for the next boring thing to happen?
Now, go out and explore, and stop fighting so much!

Plenty hermit themselves already, but yeah, the more you are known the less time you have to do nothing.
Richter2005-08-03 07:01:53
Yep, I don't have a lot of time to do nothing, sometimes. How much of the game are some of us actually using, staying in one place, doing the same thing over and over?

welcome to MUDding.
When it comes down to it, MUDs are lots of repetitive nothingness broken up by interesting roleplay/events/interaction.

I'm really starting to agree with you lately. Which is probably why I've been drifting away from Lusty and towards other games.
Vesar2005-08-03 13:21:21
I don't think the lack of interaction here is necessarily a problem with the game, but more of the way you're playing it? I'm not trying to flame or anything, but if you're getting bored with it, there are plenty of new things you can do, projects you can start, etc. Work on getting level 80 or something, or become a Planeswalker, or get honours quests, etc.
Unknown2005-08-03 13:33:17
Well... that's kinda a problem. I think you are all getting "well-known" confused with "well-hated". Not to bash you Richter it doesn't apply as much to you as to some people, but I'm sure you are enemied to quite a few places. And given enemying, it strikes out exploring or questing in the villages, exploring or bashing on several higher planes, and means you tend to have people after you, and worry about that before having a good time. Hmmm... I have a sudden Idea...
Taika2005-08-03 14:13:07
He may be well hated, but that doesnt answer for everyone else.
Syrienne2005-08-03 14:37:32
Hmm well to be honest no one forces you to sit up in Deepnight hiding. If recall this was most peoples main beef with you being Admin is even when you were here, as little as that was, you were in your manse and not alerting anyone to your presence. Now i understand the need to want to sit around and not be hassled but meh when you take on the role of Admin you got to expect to be bothered.
Given however that you've resigned from this post I'd say there's not alot stopping you from doing something other than working on the next Deepnight room or Richter cartel. I mean feel free to go explore, get lv 80, find someone to play chess etc whatever.. I know when I was on Mag on my first alt we'd play alot of chess.. Me, Valek, Mordechai, Revan etc tons of people just for fun. Sometimes be sitting there an entire day in a sort of mini tournament mode.

I pretty much agree with what Richter said, though it isn't to discredit Lusternia (Where I explore, influence, etc when I'm not working/have time). It's simply a different environment in Aetolia where you could freely walk around and quest without someone saying "Get out of or die" or talk to different factions of people without a big issue starting up from association alone.
In the end it really boils down to the playerbase and how they decide things are done, much like in Aetolia. If a certain faction wants to warmonger or another wants to co-sign with anything another organization decides to do then it's infinitely on them.

I don't think you can really blame the game for something like this.

I'm going to agree here. Maybe my post was misleading, but I was blaming the boredom on myself, and wondering if anyone else was feeling the same thing. I just don't get out much (as a character).

Yeah, enemied to a whole lot of places.
1. Serenwilde
2. Serenguard
3. Delport
Man, I suck.

Again, going to agree (I must not post my thoughts well). I was expressing that it feels like I do nothing, because I hang around Glomdoring or whatever, talk to the same people, and just don't explore as much of the game as possible, and was looking to see if other people feel similarly. And the me as admin thing, I expected to be flooded (part of why I resigned, because I didn't get any personal time, and it was no longer fun, oocly).
Have to tell you, I like you a lot more out of game. Maybe I'll hit you up for a game of chess sometime.

It certainly is up to the playerbase. They can help a game progress, or they can hurt it.
And I do miss being able to go pretty much anywhere. Even if I'm not enemied to a villiage, other places start looking at you crosseyed for being there.

I agree with you Richter i think being not as well known is a good thing unless you just a bad ass PvPer like the top fighters who most liek to be known for the fear factor. I was feelign the same way as you were so i decided to take a break from guild duties and my positions and just go out and do things i wanted to do. Hell take a vacation around the basin go explore and bash some.
Richter2005-08-03 17:03:22
Taking a break from duties and getting an ic vacation is pretty fun.
And I don't want people to think I was saying "I'm well known (because the majority of people probably don't know me) because that just leads to people flaming. Even people that aren't well known can bury their heads in work, or log on, sit in Glomdoring for hours, and log off.
Maybe people here have good ideas for things to do? Honors quests? Chess? Bashing to level 80?

Chess aside, I don't know if you should limit yourself to things based around game mechanics alone (Though having level 80 and tons of honours quest would look nice, but not necessary). However, it would be difficult to get some everyday fun interaction with commune/guild mates since most can be lazy/non-cooperative. I don't know.. I wouldn't say you need a clique because you probably have one (or know of people you'd prefer to be around), but something where you're walking around, smiling at people.. maybe heading to a nice place in the forest for some food or drink with someone/a group - random opportunities basically just to spice things up.
That's really why I put a lot of it on the playerbase. I understand there are places we shouldn't associate with, but people need to step away from some things and make it more casual at times so we won't have monotonous times.
Either way.. I don't think you could do it alone.
Exarius2005-08-04 01:25:36
My own favorite luxury is to simply keep an eye out for new faces. Established players always seem to be on the run or simply wanting some peace and quiet (see original post above), but more newbies than not will stop for a bit of pleasant conversation if all you do is smile at them.
New players are also not entrenched in politics or dogma, prepared to spit on me because I interpret some passage of the histories differently than they do.
And while some newbies are indeed clueless and tedious -- just like some well established players -- the very best friends I've ever made in all the MUDs I've ever played have all come from my introducing myself to newbies.

I've actually found that it's easy to slip into a similar rut with all my GM duties as well. If I don't pay attention to what I'm doing, I'll end up spending all, or nearly all, of my time in Magnagora with the occasional trip to Nil. That isn't to say that this is "being lazy," because there's a lot to do in a leadership position such as your former Admin one or my GM one.
However, I do find it to be refreshing whenever I take a little break from whatever I'm doing to head out into the world for a while. Whether it's doing some village comm quests, an occasional honours quest, raising some power, or just exploring or meeting other people, I find that it definately helps me return to the GM role feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work. A lot of times, I'll just take a stroll and enjoy the scenery (and all the hard work that went into it! )
In other words, set aside some time for a few personal goals (even if they're small and easily achievable) that you can work on. Don't let your role consume your character, but have it instead be another (albeit large) facet of yourself.
That, and delegate, delegate, delegate!
