I don't know if there have been any posts about this yet, but here are my suggestions for a library system.
I've seen how libraries are handled in Imperian and, well, they suck. First of all, every Guild would have a library, and every city/commune would have a library. The Guild Admin and/or the Secretaries would be in charge of guild libraries, and the Minister of Culture would have control over the city ones.
Each library would have two categories in it. Private books, and public books. A private book is a piece of writing that has been added to that library and can only be accessed by visiting it. Examples would be a book of Nihilist rituals, or a curing guide for Serenguards. Public books would be submitted directly to a 'literary admin', like the Charites (but different). Only a limited number could be submitted each month, to keep the workload down, and upon approval the book will be able to be viewed at any library in the game.
Example:
The Glomdoring Library
library list all
Duh big book o' ritualz, by Bricriu
Swordz and crap, by Daganev
Why everyone else sucks, by Guido Flagg
15 Ways to cook a Wakabi, by Visaeris
Elderberry Crunch - an exposition, by Riyo
Tae'dae Weight Loss, by Jack
library list private
Duh big book o' ritualz, by Bricriu
Swordz and crap, by Daganev
Why everyone else sucks, by Guido Flagg
library list public
15 Ways to cook a Wakabi, by Visaeris
Elderberry Crunch - an exposition, by Riyo
Tae'dae Weight Loss, by Jack
It would also be searchable by author or name, much like ads can be searched through.
library show *tae'dae* private
No results.
library show *tae'dae* all
Tae'dae Weight Loss, by Jack
library show *riyo* public
Elderberry Crunch - an exposition, by Riyo
Now isn't that fun and easy? It is!

As long as we can copy books for 250gp before, I'm happy.
And I think they said this is one fo the things they were working on, I can't wait.

I thought we were going to take the stock code from Aetolia or whatever?
Richter2005-08-03 23:08:42
The gods here rarely seem to copy anything in its exact form.

There is no such thing as stock code. There are some things that are barrowed, but on the rare chance that happens, it is barrowed from Achaea.
On the subject of libraries, so useless... doubt we'll ever get around to them.

Hajamin, as much as I love all of the administration, if you actually mean this I might have to see if I can persuade Lisaeris to add you to Her sweatshop. But if you're going to borrow code, Aetolia's library system is infinitely better than Achaea's.

Speaking as an MLS student ... grr.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the perception of libraries being useless is in-game only. If I counted correctly, Moondancers have 84 GHELP scrolls, some of which would be much more appropriate in book-form. Books available in library rooms would enhance the atmosphere and encourage socialization between members of the same groups. Libraries as community centers!

Wait, we're never going to see them?
Taika2005-08-04 04:55:29
I love how weve been told countless times that they are coming... and now your like "No."
And yes, I have been told by a Divine (Lacostian, to be precise). And Estarra, I think, some point here on the forums.

Okay, this is how it works: The individual IRE games do not as a policy share code for specific systems. We do not have access to Achaea's library system code or code of any systems in Imperian or Aetolia. This is to encourage us to develop on our own arcs and our own unique systems--we strive to be different from each other, not the same!
However, there are some CORE systems which we do all share (and which in fact we must use). These systems generally are never noticed by the average player, usually affecting stability, administrative functions, scripting tools and the like.
Regarding libraries, it just so happens that there was a core "book" system that we needed before we started coding our own library system (which relates to database architecture and management). It had nothing to do with how "libraries" work--that's for us to design and code in our uniquely Lusternian fashion.
As usual, we do not release specifics on what is currently in development or what stage we are in development of any project.

Understandable, but Hajamin essentially said no to libraries.
I don't mean to pry, but it does sound as if we get books, but not a way to store them. *chuckle*

Meh. Just take what ever Hajamin says and assume the opposite.
Tenebrae2005-08-04 11:25:32
If we were to have a library system that is completely or semi-unique, how long would you imagine it would take?
