Some things that have been on my mind for a little while.
Which tradeskill is most profitable when you own a shop?
What things tend to sell best in your shops?
Edit- Forgot to mention, I'm most interested in hearing about regular shops though manse shop information is helpful too.

Cheap weapons and armour (field plate is harder to sell), slings are hard to sell, food is always good. Herbs sell -really- well. Uh... It's been a while since my store has actually been stocked. >_<

Tailoring sells better in shops than in person, and if you stock semi-regularly, is less of a hassle.
Richter2005-08-12 18:18:49
Everything sells better in a store than it does in person.
1. You can charge a bit higher, and people will still buy (and can't complain to you, cause you're not there).
2. Shops are always there, you're not.

Tailoring used to be a pain to deal with in person, before I wrote a showsketch script, that shows someone a design without me having to copy/paste/deletenewlines.
Edit: Oh, right I should post ontopic too when I post offtopic. Selling tailoring in a shop is nice because you can stock a variety of each type of thing, giving your customers a visible selection to choose from. When you sell in person, it's hard to get across what all your designs are and what they all look like. This makes it much easier. So, tailoring is good to sell in a shop, I think.

Tailoring is nice in shops. I made some nice money off my shop with it.

Yeah, I used to have an aether node, when someone told me 'Tailoring', I went into the tailoring spiel. They could tell me 'Tailoring shoes' to see my shoes designs. 'Tailoring shoes 1' to see the descriptions, costs, etc., for the first shoes pattern.

Herbs and Alchemy.
Niara2005-08-12 23:34:25
Herbs sell always well but also alchemy, though I think that's mostly because alchemists always hide and only very few people stock potions in their shops.
Things like pipes go slow but steady and tints vary a lot but generally go slow and steady too.
Herbs go extremely well when the shop is near an alembic.

I can always find a market for herbs and jewelry. Put them in the stockroom of a friend and watch them sell out dead fast. Even in Magnagora. Of course, we're all herb and elixir cows here, but that's beside the point.

I find it difficult to sell other people's stuff consistantly.
That's why we need to let me learn multiple tradeskills.

Hand it all to me, Richter. I'll sell it for you. I won't even take much of the profits.
Eyod2005-08-13 01:57:42
showsketch script, what where, I want!

Especially now that we've got manse shops available to anyone who's truly determined to be a shopkeeper, trying to sell other peoples' stuff is one of my big pet peeves. Not because your friends don't deserve a market for their wares, but because it gets really annoying the number of shops that aspire to be some sort of Medieval Wal-Mart.
This is a multiplayer game. How about we try to do one thing really well and let the other players have something to do, too?

I played Aetolia for around 2, maybe 3 years... I ran 5 shops at one stage, three of them being personal shops and two of those being in probably the most populated area in Sapience. I -loved- being able to stock them myself, and without relying on someone to fashion wares for me. shopkeeping.
In Lusternia, I was proprietor of 4 shops simultaneously in Serenwilde, and another for a short period of time during the early days in Magnagora. (Don't ask Skyla about it because she blames Tuek entirely) Terribly terribly hard to keep them all stocked well when you must rely on others, and when given the small playerbase. Also, it is close to impossibe while holding a position in leadership.... Although the latter was my choice. (A burden that one chooses is not felt.. if you can even call it a burden Moondancers!)
But then, this is not Achaea or Aetolia (thank GAWD for that) and Lusternia has always struck me as a game where it is close to impossible to achieve anything solo. You need comradery and co-operation to survive, so being the idealist that I am, I think I like the status quo.
Skyla2005-08-13 08:18:54
Pssst... I secretly want to learn more trade skills but shh
Niara2005-08-13 10:21:04
It is true, it is definitely difficult to keep your shops stocked with things that you cannot provide by yourself, especially when you have to beat the next trans alchemist to the alembic to make potions for you.
Ekard2005-08-13 10:27:04
There is one more thing why we shouldnt be able to learn few tradeskills. Their impact on combat.
Lets see someone learned:
Forging - adding runes to weapons/armours + full plate.
Herbs - more puffs in pipes, faster herb balance.
Poisons - immunity for one poison (mantakya mostly).
Thanks god that rest of skills isnt so good.
Those Omnitrans would be ever better with few trade skills.
I i realy loved to run shop, and i want one again. Ohh, where are you Kalidasha?!?

Someone needs to let me run a tailoring shop in each city/commune. Mine is the only one that ALWAYS has a decent range. (I'm biased, but my Geo can never find anything in Magnagora, and my Celestine doesn't have much more luck in Celest, last time I checked).

If Rexali hadn't gone bookbinding, his shop was going to have a full array of clothing. As is, he has all the shoes designs... one more week, and it'd be fully stocked. Heh.
As is, it isn't as hard as you think to stock a shop - the key is bulk orders.
