Well I was just thinking and I thought that with the new Bookbinding skill, there are some possibilities for neat objects that could help in certain parts of the game. Cutting to the point:
Notepad
Syntax: Bookbind for
Usage: write page
edit page
tear from
Notepads are 20-page stationaries that can hold quick notes and jottings without going into the editor. However, to EDIT a written page, like delete things, etc etc, you use the edit command and it takes you in into the editor. BUT, not only that, you can also TEAR pages from the notepad and give them to people. Excellent for giving errands, quick orders, and grocery shopping lists! Torn pages appear as 'note######' in your inventory.
Contract
Syntax: Bookbind for (or person?)
Usage: write (can only be done once, like a letter)
sign
Ever make a deal with someone but fear they won't keep it because you have no official proof? Well! With contracts, you can give them to other people and make them sign it and then proudly show the contract and signature to the world if they ever decide to turn their back on you!
ie. This is a contract stating that the signer hereby agrees to donate 100,000 gold to Wuylinfe every year by the end of Dvarsh.
- A signature bearing the mark of Joli is here <-- this could be in another colour to prevent fraud and stuff.
Well, even if people do break contracts, it's still nice to have.
Application Form
Syntax: bookbind for (or person...)
Usage: write
edit --- for changing questions OR answers
fill in
Okay, this will probably require special coding, soo... when you do 'write', you go to a special editor and it'll be something like this:
PLEASE ENTER YOUR FIRST QUESTION:
Name:
HOW MANY LINES SHOULD THIS ANSWER BE LIMITED TO?
1
PLEASE ENTER YOUR SECOND QUESTION:
Date:
HOW MANY LINES SHOULD THIS ANSWER BE LIMITED TO?
1
PLEASE ENTER YOUR THIRD QUESTION:
What previous experiences have you had as being ruler of a city?:
HOW MANY LINES SHOULD THIS ANSWER BE LIMITED TO?
5
Etc etc. When you read the application, you'll see the questions followed by these: _________________________________________, depending on how many lines the answer is limited to. Finally, when you 'fill in', there is prompt asking those questions on the application:
Name:
- Naruto
Date:
- 1st of Estar, 126 CE
What previous experiences have you had as being a ruler of a city?
- None
Okay!

Sounds nifty.

It does. I could actually take notes. It would be awesome.
Also, we should be able to design letters. Custom letters would be very nice to have.

You should be able to treat letters with poison.

I really like the notes idea, and how you can tear it. That would be very cool.

I think all those ideas are great, this thread should be bumped every day.

I want business cards.

I'm just gonna add another idea which I think would be extremely useful to some people/organizations...
Wall Scroll
Usage: Similar to the 'exhibit' skill in Arts, it allows a scroll to be mounted in a room, good for displaying specific rules, warnings, (shop directories), etc etc. Evades the use of flame sigils, which aren't good since you're gonna have a hard time if you ever want to move or replace the scroll with something else.

Actually, since Bookbinders are magic, you could have something similar to what I've seen in other games. Make contracts that if broken, cause severe reprecusions. For instance, the following two could be good.
Binding Peace Contract, Individual:
Two parties agree to not attack each other. If either break the contract, the breaker suffers from multiple Karma Curses and gold automatically gets deducted from his person or bank account.
Binding Peace Contract, Community:
Two cities agree to a peace treaty. If any member of the community violates the treaty, that instantly causes a drain in community gold, city power from the nexus, and/or automatically enemies all members of the offending community. Maybe other repercussions, such as the city suddenly losing all its villages.
This latter would be a fabulous way to have peace treaties. If Magnagora and Serenwilde agreed to a peace treaty, people who break the treaties would suddenly be ostrasized by their communities. It may not mean anything if two players raid a city, but if the offending city sudden had, say, 250,000 power lost from the nexus and lost 2 million gold...you can bet there will be hell to pay.

Nah, I think your idea is a bit too extreme, Phred. It's just...sometimes, you can't really anticipate some things.
But I like the Notepad idea.

Well, you could do it this way, at least for community contracts:
The community leaders have control over the contract. You can write it as simple or as complex as needed. You can then have the community leader be the judge in determining if the contract is broken, and execute the "breach" command.
The divine (via the fates) will review the contract and determine if the terms were broken. If they feel the contract was not breached, they will revese the decision. If they feel the one using the breach command was acting in a false manner, they will penalize the community for doing so.
I think this is a good way to enforce peace treaties. Consider that such a treaty would be rare and important, it's not going to be a huge headache to implement. And it brings a sense of justice to the basin.

How about this? I promise not to kill Phred and sign a magically enforced contract. But, I do so anyway so one of the following could happen to me: certian people are notified as soon as I kill him, I become KOS (kill on sight), I will automatically become an (temporary?) enemy of whatever, lose access to whatever, loose X amount of gold, etc.
Unknown2005-08-27 19:35:29
Forcing the Divine to do ANYTHING is a bad idea. Especially something as player-caused as peace treaties.
