As i was dri... flying home in my ca... on my broom (hehe i want this bumper sticker "My other car is a broomstick" what i'm not weird)
i started thinking about this.
What if there were skills that were raised by using abilities.
Such as say channeling being raised by using skills involving calling on powers (such as totems, some moon/night skills, some elementalism etc the more related skills the harder to raise) slowly as you raise channeling the skills that are related to it get tiny bonuses (very slight decrease in recovery, harder hitting or whatever)
There would be a few of these with most abilities being related to more than one skill.
lingo change skill now = talent
Alright so lets say you are a moondancer, you have mastered the channeling talent and decide to actually use shine (heh i know, asif) your practice with channeling could allow the effect to last longer.
anyone like this?

It's good in principle, but the problem is it just encourages automated repetition until the skill is 'maxed' out.

hmm *thinks* perhaps everytime you use the same skill in a row the ammount it raises the talent by is halved and you have to wait however long before it raises the skill (similar to a burnout)?
please keep in mind that some talents would relate only to attacks or defenses. and say a healing talent would only work if the ability actually did something.

The teacher card in tarot raises a random slill, truefavours will raise skills depending on what the god wishes to raise them too. I don't like the idea, mainly people can abuse it
Saran2005-08-30 12:14:39
*shrug* the idea is to give people something that they can work at. imagine wining a battle against someone who is basically your twin simply because you spent time practicing specific skills.
also doesn't teacher raise the skillset?
the idea of this is too boost individual skills

I don't think it'd work too well.

what you mean is a skill based mud, which would mean changing
lusternia and all it's player abilities and mechanics at it's core. heavily
doubt that would happen.

Having sat on skill-based muds and sitting with a reflex to "cast " repeatedly until it is 100%. I can vouch for the fact this is an abusable system.
Hell, want to improve that dodge skill, sword swing, shield block?! Attack the bank teller, he only does 50 damage and he is unkillable, 2 hours later 100% skills.
I love IRE for its uniqueness in not being just another SMAUG or ROM mud. It is what attracted me years ago and it is why I stay today. Once you throw off the shackles of the 99 million other muds out there that have far to many colours and far to many people asking "hey dude, where can I get the elite armour of dragon skin +100?" you will love IRE for its uniqueness too.

It would be interesting though, if you reach a certain rank in your guild, city, order, if you can recieve a boost call talent, which will last for so and so amount of days, and will increase the productivity of a certain skill... If you are a knight, and use it on a power skill, increase the amount of attacks or strength

I still say each race should get a special skillset and be allowed to pick a set of talents/weakness at creation like in Aracanum/Fallout
