I'd love a way to let others read a book in a specific place, but be able to take it to make changes in it if I need to. Flaming the book and dropping it there works, but then you can't make changes. Just dropping it means someone is going to walk off with it.
The bookstand item could allow the one tuned to it to place a single book on it which noone else can pick up, but anyone can read, and that's all.

Make me get you two books, one a copy of the other. Flame the copy, drop it in a place. Edit the other and have the copy magically altered as you do it!

You just want me to order more books so you get more money
But yeah, I guess I could do that. It isn't as classy though, having a book flamed to the floor.

I do indeed have ulterior motives.
It's still a valid solution though.

While we're at it, let's build on Richter's teleportation circles idea, where you can set up bookstands ala Myst/Riven to teleport yourself around. Like Paintings. Or better still, a high-level skill in planar that lets you set up gates around prime! Yay!
Ahem.
Ahem.

give artisans the ability to build display pillars or bookstands
they are tuned to the owner, the owner can put an object like
a book on the pillar and anyone can come look at the book and turn
it's pages but not be capable of taking or editing it. I suppouse
it could be used for other things like jewelry or shrunken head displays.

This is the best idea ever invented.
...except you stole it from one of my favorite games.
