attention

I was just thinking (i know... dangerous)

But i think it would be nice if our characters had attention abilities

so for example if your focusing on drawing power from a nexus, you might not notice people entering the room (except for a transverse), or teleporting out.
but by the same note with thirdeye up you could "focus" on someone and notice when they actually leave

this means that some things might escape your attention when something is happening or someone is trying to disctract you.

also this could be a place to suggest hooded cloaks? ( ninja.gif ing my own thread)
where if the hood is lifted unless you pay attention to the figure you couldn't tell who they are. (woo sneaking in safely)

I don't particularly like the attention idea. Spam is distracting enough anyways.

As for hijacking your own thread (psst, it's hijacking, not ninjaing) I'd be more for hooded robes for head protection since the magical classes are in desperate need of it. As for sneaking, everyone knows everyone else's name and all of that other good stuff anyways since it's all written on your personal aether strand. You'll have to use cloaking for sneaking.

I think Saran's suggestion isn't to add more things you see, but reduce them instead.

Right now, you can see people walking around, tell who they are in a blink, and notice every say, emote, or event that happens in the room your in unless active hiding/shrouding abilities are in play. Saran wants to change it so that this is more of an ability than a divine given right. A few examples to set the idea:

When linking to a Nexus, you would be too focused on the event to notice people leaving.

Meditating makes a 'wind' effect to talk: you sometimes hear what's being said, sometimes you just hear 'mutterings around you'.

Stuff like that. It can also fall into combat roles: Focus body/mind won't let you notice the enemy eating or quaffing vials, for example. Abilities, like Thirdeye, would have the ability to nullify some of those events (toggleable: you may NOT want to hear people babble when meditating). We could even have skills (either new ones or set into other skills) that let you ignore certain events (the ones that people love to gag, for example).

I can even see odd events, like Sensitivity making you hyperaware to the point where small events start spamming out like mad.

Good for RP, terrible for gameplay.

It wouldn't be too bad if it only left out some text that isn't directly related to you. For example, if you're in a group fight (say, six people?), and two of them are attacking you, then you'll receive all of those messages. However, some of the messages involving other people will be filtered out.

That would be interesting, as it would actually allow people to run away by just... running away.
Cwin2005-09-10 19:23:31
Yah, that's generaly what I was thinking of: nothing like not seeing someone slash at you, or not seeing an attack comming: just smaller things. It's already done with Sleeping.

Sylphas2005-09-10 22:11:01
Sleeping you still notice a lot. You shouldn't.
Saran2005-09-11 03:56:41
i was thinking something like this
doing nothing: still see everything thats happening unless you normally wouldn't
meditation/linking: hmm might not notice people entering/talking/emoting unless they are directed at you
focusing on a specific person: notice everything that they do but you don't notice some "quiet" actions from others.
sleeping: don't notice anything happening around you. still get tells though and can still tell if someone tries to "wake" you(if thats an emote, never used it)

also about the cloaks i think it mightn't have been clear enough. what would happen when you lifted it is that your title would change to "A cloaked figure stands here" (what ever you wield would propably remain visible) so if you wanted to bolt through magnagora even if someone sees you they would have to actually look at you to see who you are

Meh, no cloak ability. Reminds me too much of the Idras on Imperian.
Vix2005-09-11 20:23:59
And again with the cloak thing, there's a reason everyone knows everyone else's name in Lusternia. It's written on the 'aether strand' of that person which can be read by anyone, so hiding your face won't hide your aether.

Saran,

did you come from armageddon? The cloak idea was something I remember there which I've always wanted to see elsewhere. The game mechanics are different here, there is no auto-retaliate, and combat is much more complex. But, I've always liked the idea.
Saran2005-09-12 00:11:47
i was actually playing SWR:LOTJ and they have their new armor system which conceals your name by replacing it with your armors short desc.

though they have the greet system set up. so you only see "A weak human (blah blah blah)" until they greet you.

but still it would be cool...

*gently guides people back to the topic*
Unknown2005-09-12 00:21:45
Such RP-intensive ideas wouldn't work well in Lusternia, due to its sizable and largely casual playerbase. Only smaller, niche MUDs can really afford to have such specialized functions.

See this is glaring falacy in many reality arguments. You don't define reality, especially in Lusternia. In Lusternia it is perfectly plausable that you sense things but don't hear them, etc. etc. And if you can't sense people around when you're asleep then I congratulate you, because you sleep a lot better than I do.
Archthron2005-09-12 19:58:57
It would be nice to have an ability to just concentrate on one person, and you'd ignore the random chattering of everyone else. And maybe you could do that in combat too, so you would, for instance, have a slightly higher dodge rate against them, but a much lower one against everyone else.
