So I was talking to Elaria about this yesterday. What do you guys think about Ravnica from what you've seen so far? I'm kind of disappointed actually. They could have done more with the plot (the little bit I've seen of it), an all-city premise in a fantasy world looked pretty interesting but it looks kind of messy on second thoughts. The mechanics just aren't as interesting as CHK either. I'm going to miss the Kami a lot, I think.
(And I really need to get the E-Books of that block actually. If anyone knows where I can get a hold of 'em, I'd love it if you'd tell me, it's one of the first blocks that's really interested me in ages.)

What I've seen of Ravnica looks splendid. I haven't really liked Kamigawa block.

WTF is a Ravnica?
Sylphas2005-09-10 01:33:35
Ravnica is the next MTG expansion.

Oh. I have about 1000 cards from 7th edition and some of the other sets released around that time, and a nice deck, but I haven't been keeping up with things. Never got too into it.

Weirdo.
CHK was awesome.

I've only caught up recently. I hadn't really played since Urza's block, but my friend dragged me to a draft tournament, and I had a great time, and started building up a new collection. The new card format is pretty.

I heard that whenever they release a new block of cards, all the old ones are void and can never be used in official tournaments again. That's what seriously turned me off.

You heard wrong.
Standard covers the current year of cards, and the last year of cards.
Extended covers the last 5 (?) years of cards.
Vintage or whatever they call it these days counts every card ever made.
The thing is though, Standard is the cheapest to play, because you don't have to have the money potential to buy like 6 years back of cards before you can actually play competitively.

I quit playing in 11th grade, so it's been 3 or 4 years since I've picked up a deck. I can't imagine the OMGZ BUYBUYBUY thing that would happen though, if I started playing again. Back in middle school, I was buying commons with spare change... Ah... to have a real job now...

Anyway. The mechanics seem kind of dull, as I say. Dredge, Convoke...this stuff is basically the same mechanics we've all seen on other cards before and just given a keyword.
Guild mana looks kind of interesting, but more because of the symbol coolness than the way it actually works. I mean...it won't even have much effect at all, since most of them are designed to work in multicolour decks so it's not like it can work in a single-colour deck at full efficiency anyway (which is what would have made it interesting, IMHO, like a new take on certain-colours-only artifacts.)
The radiance stuff seems kind of lame too, and auras aren't anything special. And convoke...we've seen this all before. Dredge is a bit weird, though. The uniqueness on this block is really low, is all. I hope the next two sets have more interesting stuff to offer.

Let's see, I stopped playing right around Ice Age. I still have a Jester's Cap, Dark Icy Manip, 5th edition Shivan, Balduvian Hordes, all sorts of stuff lying around. I'd sell it all, but I doubt it'd go for much on Ebay.
