I'm not very sure how I missed a thread that was basicly there to flame me, but yeah.. I did. I am not making this thread to stir up more trouble, but just to bring up a few things.
I'm almost always on and when I'm not around my little half-Hajamin daughter is usually around stalking the novices.. so yeah. Things get taken care of one way or the other even if people have to ask me to log on over aim or msn. I am usually there in some shape or form.
Have any of the other guilds come up with an idea of incentives to give the undersecs and just the plain regular people in the guild? Right now teaching novices is a requirement to get to GR3 and the Undersecs have to teach/give interviews or they will be replaced, but that doesn't seem to make them want to work with some of the peskier novices..
With the influx of novices I have found that my undersecs don't want to deal with some of the really horrible newbies. I'm not very sure how to get around this because some of them are just.. really bad newbies and I can't deal with all that by myself or I'll go insane.
If any of the other guild leaders have a system that they think works really well please tell me, because I'm in the process of redoing bits and pieces of the Aquas.

FORCING people to work with novices is a /bad/ idea. Just in general.
I for one would never, ever do it.
I for one would never, ever do it.
Xavius2005-09-16 04:14:02
The biggest incentive I've had is 1) getting my arse handed to me by Serens consistently, and 2) having a good role model. Shayle hand-raises novices that I'd look at as only mildly promising and turns them into quite amazing, active critters.
Honestly, the results are the only reason I even look twice at our novices. It wasn't that long ago that Marsu was disfavoured for teaching me and not doing the paperwork afterwards, even though any half-arsed attempt to look through the logs would have shown it.

It's not the only thing they can do to pass that interview, but they have to do -something- and teaching novices is the easiest.
Varrin2005-09-16 04:17:35
Maybe you have this allready but just have a number of lessons with novices they need to complete for GR3 whether it be 3,5 or 10. Training novices is disheartening when maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 even hang around. People need the option of saying no to training for awhile.
Saran2005-09-16 04:35:51
for moondancers originally there was the novice sphere who were incharge of taking care of the novices. that was our only responsibility, with the witching path (i think it might degenerate it a little) any moondancers can teach 3 novices (if they have permission) as a task for advancement. Originally it was ten novices trained and you got GR2, hmm 10 graduation talks for GR3 (lil hazy)
This basically means that if you want to be advanced (heh i don't actually care that much right now, more fun meeting dusties) you have to catch the novice as they enter the realms otherwise they learn from the scrolls and thats generally not good unless they are returners.
In my achaea days i would create an alt see how long it took the guild to offer some in-person help. too long suicide fun.

Please ignore everything the troll said - he was just here to stir up trouble for some psychology project about addiction. Is that legal, using someone as a test subject without permission? Can an admin track down where he attends classes so we can get him in trouble? I can't stand people who pull that kind of crap >_<
Shiri2005-09-16 10:30:30
Like hell was that just a psychology experiment. The guy just wanted to annoy people and came up with a half-assed excuse like that.

Incorrect. Teaching novices in such a way as you described is one of the options we have available as a task for the formal route of advancement. There are no restrictions on guildfavours only to those who follow the Witching Path. Many ways to be advanced, without dealing with novices.

Helping novices can be done as a part of the Path, but it's not at ALL the way to advance in the guild. The tasks are trivial - the actual work in the Witching Path are the discussion topics. Sitting down with two people from the guild and telling them about something very simple, like your views on the Taint, or on how the guilds of the Serenwilde work together, or whatever the contemplation is for your rank. It's not like we force our members to do certain things to advance in rank anyway, and it angers me when people insinuate that. Most people advance through favours, which we give to people we feel deserve them for service to the Coven and to our ideals. Do not insinuate that you HAVE to train novices to advance. This is incorrect, having no basis on reality at all.

Actually I think that was just Raezon having fun with his mod privs. I know he changed some of the posts to be more amusing.
Troll boy is just rather lucky I never noticed the thread.. because I'm always around, Myna is usually around (but she's gone this week cos her compy broke), and Kaileigh is almost always around. It's almost impossible that he was around that much and never got taught. I don't even know who the hell his character was...

Hey you forgot me, I'm normally around to help novices, give or take 2 times when I had important things to do. And troll boy wasn't a novice in the Aquamancers he was someone that just wanted to stir up trouble. I don't believe he is doing a thesis on anything cause I know alot concerning the requirements of a thesis, the most important parts are:
1. You can't take any writings from anywhere without the permission of the writer. On a Forum all writers belong to the one that wrote them and he would need permission of each and single one of them unless Lusty had a copyright (didn't see it on the bottom) to transfer all rights to them.
2. If this was a thesis project he cleary missed the point where the researcher is not supposed to stage an artificial situation.
3. He is to immature to be writing a sociology/psychology thesis.
(Well this is going to get my warning level up )
Unknown2005-09-16 13:51:41
No, we dumped warn level, after Nullobject we just suspend people on first offence.
Kahazul2005-09-16 13:54:03
Well, I've seen a number of Aquamancer novices complaining over newbie that no one will help them over GNT. You guys must've gotten quite a lot more than the Geos, or no one's doing their job.
What did Nullobject do?

Well it seems we get novices in waves. When we get novices they come in waves of 5 while I'm the only noviceaid available. I try making them read 'ghelp novices' But some just miss my request on GNT and they get upset and go to newbie.
And I can only teach one novice at a time, I have seriously shortened my novice introductions from explaining each usefull skill and the use of planes to read AB PLANAR RIFT and read HELP PLANES and stuff. (I really don't like doing that)
And I think we have to little novice aides to handle the current steam of new novices. (mainly cause Myna is gone who is like the best novice aid ever )
Shamarah2005-09-16 19:12:14
Wait, Myna's gone? She didn't tell me!
But yeah. I help novices if I'm bored or don't have anything else important to do. Or if they ask me directly and I have time.

I think some novices would be scared to ask questions out of fear they'll look like a fool to other novices who could be alts or other IRE-game converts.
Also it's easier to tune to a specific novice then to a group

Yeah.. like the one time we got 3 in around.. 2 seconds. That was scary. I had to disable my greeting trigger because Vesar was about to pop a blood vein.
I've taught 3 at once. Went pretty well actually. Though they seemed more interested in cuddling each other at the time.
My intros are usually around 20 minutes long, though I've never gotten a hold of a really new novice, so it would probably take a lot longer in that case. I prefer testing..

Myna's not gone. She is just having some computer issues right now. Last time she left her internet card died.. now it's something else.
