Why are books so expensive?

This is something that has always puzzled me since taking up bookbinding, but why are all the books so expensive?

For instance, if you want as many pages as you can, you'll be paying at least 50,000 gold for a tome/omnibus. Why so much?

Is it to discourage too much unwanted literature?

They initial books are expensive, but copies are dirt cheap, so, i'm guessing that yeah, its to prevent a ton of crap from floating around, while also providing gold sinks.

Well, dirt cheap being around 5000. tongue.gif

Maybe that's it, but I wonder if there is something else that will become evident as this complex library system is released? It just seems odd to discourage too much player-created content, no matter the quality.

Any hints about that?

Aye.

People have made copies of my copies of The Basic Art

Bugger. That makes any book business very difficult.

If you're writing/copying a normal book, the actual cost is hardly anything (well, a bit more now cause of wood), but really you should be able to get away with around 500-1000 per copy.. not too horrible, really.

Edit: Also, You can SEAL BOOK, so that they can't be copied or translated.
Unknown2005-09-18 02:46:30
Well, if I write a book that will be updated, and make copies to sell... as soon as one sells I can no longer profit from copies of my book. Anyone can get one from those that were already sold. Sealing means I can't update it, so there's no point in actually owning a copy... you could just read it once and remember the information.

If you seal a copy, i'm pretty sure it still updates when you update the original, due to the magic ink part. All it does is prevent the book from being copied/translated, as far as I know.

So, so long as no one got a hold of your original, the only copies would be the one you sold.

Ah, ok. Nifty.
