At the moment, the skill of HerbRenewal in Ecology works like this.
Ok, so for five power you can make a plant native to that environment sprout, with 1 leaf on it. While this is fine, why not simply wait for the herb to sprout on its own? Or ask a Herbalist to replant at no cost? It's an expensive ability with little use.
So, instead, I would like to suggest either of the following updates:
So for five power, you cause a full 60-leaf plant to sprout, or even half of that, say 30 leaves out of 60. Maybe you could even make it so the amount is random between 1 and 60, with the probability density function normal and centred at 30.
So for five power you can RENEW HERB YARROW to make an existing yarrow bush sprout back to full.

In any natural environment capable of growing herbal plants that happens to be
barren, you can renew the ground causing one type of plant to sprout. The type
is a random type that naturally grows in that environment.

Sounds a bit unfair to give herbalists a potentially neverending supply of commodity.
Unknown2005-09-22 05:43:58
Well, aye, for 100 power they would get about 600 extra herbs (assuming the half-full suggestion goes in and it isn't restricted to once per day or something). I'd also imagine if these changes went in the skill would be limited to prime/ethereal (as its a druidy skill).
Maybe it is a little too strong, could you think of any alternative suggestions for making the current 5p skill worthwhile to have?

I'd simply cut the power cost to 1 or 0, or have sprout a whole plant but only be usable once per day.

Sprouting a whole plant once a day sounds fine.

Why not institute some type of serious and noteable damage to the environ from taint/flood? And it's only reverseable via Regrowth. <3

tainting/flooding already wipes out some herbs, I don't think we need it to post a little thing on survey saying: "this area is scared by the Magics of City Mages, please see an ecologist, or your screwed as an herbalist, thank you"

Removing the power cost would be fine too.

I'm pretty sure that this skill is there in case some idiot newbie harvests ALL the flax in the world (again), or someone just takes all the herbs of one type. And I always see taint and flood in the mountains, which kills off all the mountain herbs. The cost seems a little high though.

hmm...time to get out my picket signs again.
SAVE THE FLAX!
Jalain2005-09-28 01:34:50
I remember in the first few weeks, the only place that had flax was Stewartsville, so I helped with trying to replant Estelbar.. only to see the planted flax to blow away in the wind.

Even if not, then some Druid or Wiccan novice will come in and harvest it.

It doesn't matter anyway, herbs regrow on their own eventually. There's no way to actually destroy a herb population, thank the gods.
That was part of Auseklis' push for "let the Herbalists roam free!", wasn't it?

I seem to remember though when Lisaera had to give us -1- sparkleberry plant to replant because there was literally none left...

It should have come back after the next hibernation, though. Would have just taken a bit, depending on the date.
