Ok, I've been trying to work what things have an effect on damage. As far as I can tell there are two sources of damage, physical and magical. Abilities that do physical damage are affected by strength, whereas abilites that do magical damage are affected by intelligence.
However, there are also damage types. These are linked to race penalties and benefits. So point cudgel would do less damage to a tae'dae than a human, but would do the same damage to a human and a loboshigaru, even though its origin is magical.
Is this right? Let me know if I've got anything wrong. I'd also like to know how much of an affect intelligence has on damage done by magical abilities.

You've got it right.
As for how much of an effect intelligence has, it's not a linear scale, so I don't quite know how to describe it. But the difference between 13 and 14 was noticeable for me with my moonburst, and Thaemorn's 17 INT cudgels hurt considerably more than Sylphas' 13 INt ones.
