Yay, Economy!

"Smart production" by the villagers has been on my wish list ever since I arrived; probably the most glaringly absent puzzle piece of a fully functioning economy, and one I've never known to be implemented on a MUD before.

Add to that the fact that more tradeskills = fewer players with each tradeskill = greater market share for each tradesman, and things have been steadily looking up.

Although there are still plenty of economic principles that could be incorporated, I never thought I'd see even this much implemented.

I have to concur.

Love the concept, and it makes sense.
Lisaera2005-10-04 15:17:47
Roark's confusing. I've taken to hiding whenever he asks for opinions on his latest bout of economic changes.
Nayl2005-10-04 15:21:41
Yea, all that math.
Add more Socials!

Mmm... Math...

I wholeheartedly agree. Economics BELONGS in games. Some of us can't have fun without a few numbers.

I happen to be an economics buff. Right now I'm wading through the unabridged "Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith, for example, and after that I'll probably read through Ludwig von Mises and *shudder* Keynes. The economy is not the ideal I'd like to see, but certainly better. If the time were justified I'd have multiple constraints like labour, capital, natural resources, etc. and then do Simplex Method optimization of production. Plus I'd like to have things like shortages and surpluses. A good or bad season could cause all vegetables to be in surplus or shortage across the realms. Or perhaps Rockholm's minors go on strike and everything from that one village alone becomes in short supply, etc. I'd also like more intelligence in how much it will shift production form one comm to another. But let's see how this works out and go from there.
Malicia2005-10-04 15:49:10
That sounds amazing.
Shiri2005-10-04 15:55:51
That seems really complicated for the effect I can see it feasibly having (Roark's post, not the already-announced thing, which rocks, MORE WOOD WHEE (EDIT: Unless I understood that wrong and it's actually going to get more expensive, too tired to check dry.gif)), but of course I'm sitting in the wrong place to see. Whatever works for you economist people, I guess. biggrin.gif
Iridiel2005-10-04 16:04:54
If you want surpluses and carencies to kick in, you need the comms to decay after a time. Otherway, people will just store them in their rifts for the bad years.
You could add a skill called engineering, for making fridges.

Alger2005-10-04 21:52:36
then then then roak we can implement a currency system! where we'll be using our own bills... the Magnagoran Dollar vs the Celest Dollar
Ashteru2005-10-04 21:54:36
I'd totally open up a false coining studio and kill Celest with inflation. ninja.gif

There's always allowing shops to turn Corperate and creating a Stock Market.

The insanity that would cause is almost making me drool*

*remember, I'm the same person that likes the idea of cities actualy being able to be destroyed in the right circumstances, just to see the PoV I'm comming from.
Acrune2005-10-04 23:26:38
Eek, no vegetable shortages, everyone but me and about half a dozen others in Celest would starve to death tongue.gif

Stock market would be kind of neat... Not really sure how it'd work. And I have enough real life frusterations with stocks *punt microsoft*
Ashteru2005-10-04 23:32:51
Come on...mobs drop neutral gold, and if you give it to certain mobs in Glom/Seren/Mag/Celest, they'll give you their currency wich you have to use in that city/commune.

Like for 1 neutral gold, you get 10 Celestial lira, but only around 0.5 Magnagoran Dollar.

The more money you get, the less worth it is...and for example if the Celestial Lira defers too much from the Magnagoran dollar, say 5 currency points, the Dwarfs in their villages would tend to revolt faster since they want to get paid with hard gold, whereas for example the hippiekins in Estelbar would revolt slower since it wouldn't be 'all about the money' in their dominators city/commune.
Nokraenom2005-10-04 23:45:26
What a completely awesome change.

You kick ass, Roark! cheers.gif
Athana2005-10-04 23:48:11
Very impressive stuff, Roark. Thank you. smile.gif
