I've been browing around the internet lately, and I came across something quite interesting here. It tells about Google bombs, and how to increase a site's rank on Google by how many links there are to it. If you're new to the concept, I'd advise you to check it out.
Now, being somewhat new to the concept, I have some questions, but the biggest one is, can we googlebomb to show "mud" as Lusternia at #1? From what I'm gathering, all we'd need to do is grab our blogs (you all have one, don't lie), and put in a link that says "mud" with the target as www.lusternia.com. If I'm understanding this correctly, and we get enough people, we can actually put Lusternia on the first page of google, when you search for "mud".
Anyone think there's a flaw in this that I can't see? Think it's a good idea?

Isn't using goggle bombs considered an unethical business practice? I mean, I know people do it... but it basically manipulation of the google algorithm, no?

I don't like the idea of abusing the system to our advantage.
Hajamin2005-10-12 06:40:38
It's not really abuse of the system, that's what the system is there for. That is common practice for all web developers to use. I used to do web design professionally, and still do it from time to time.
In this case, mud isn't always the best word to use. Game, RPG, mud, etc are all good ones to use.
The way google, and most search engines work, is they have a program called a spider that follows links on all websites. It records how many sites link to X website, and uses that to determine where to list it in the rankings. It's really a measure of how popular a site is, so linking to it from your personal site or blog is exactly the purpose of the system, to show that Lusternia is a very popular site to visit.
A good way to do it would be to write something like:
This is my favourite game, it's an RPG mud that has...

That sounded lkike a subtle hint from Hajamin.

Just giving more information on how the linking system works. I'm not for or against doing it, such things are, and always will be, up to you.

Well, I briefly thought I understood the concept, but why is it that whenever I search for "Richter Carthan" or "Marc, Lusternia" they both bring up the IRE site, to which I'm sure has little or no links with either my real or fake name going to it.
Sylphas2005-10-12 17:54:23
Because it's entered into the database if it mentions something, and then is ranked by how many links go to it. Since you have like, no links, the one that mentions it most is probably at the top. I think.

Many sites link to IRE, so IRE has a high ranking. Your name is on the IRE site(as one of the player comments), hence when you search for you name IRE's site appears.
Googles ranking is based off more than just how many sites link to yours, it also takes into account what words are on your site.

So if I got a bunch of friends on myspace to make a link that says Richter Carthan and that links to myspace, we'd likely see Lusternia pop up as the first choice for my name?

Ah, so there is more than one way then.
