I'm halfway through the new Wheel of Time book, and so far it's awesome! Unlike the last book, the plot goes somewhere

WoT went downhill after book 3. Too much useless junk in that series. It's about 800 pages of useless material and the last 50 pages has all the cool parts.
Revan2005-10-14 22:49:52
I'd have to disagree. Sure there are slow parts, but overall until around book 8, things were very interesting and fluid.

I canceled my order due to fear of it's absolute suck. I shall reconsider ordering it monday.

When did it come out?
Is softcover available yet?

Very recently (the 10th, I think). No, softcover is not available.

There are currently 11 'main' books, 1 prequel, and one big reader's guide. I have all but the newest book, which I don't intend to get.
As was said, after book three it starts to suck, and by ten it is simply a chore to read. There are so many different characters in so many different situations that it is difficult to keep track of them all and, due to length restrictions, none of them accomplish much in any given book. I think in Book 10 there was maybe one or two chapters devoted to each 'subplot'; you hardly even saw any of the characters.
The only high points in the later books are the battle between Rand's army and those island people, and the cleansing of the shadow from the male side of the magic thingy. The cleansing, however, was just about completely ignored in the following book. They were all just, like, "Yeah, right, I don't believe that happened. Moving on..."
Robert Jordan is trying to make an epic, but all he's making is a mess. If you want a good epic story, read The Dark Tower.

Yeah. Crazy dragon-riding lesbian princesses... what's not to love?
Unknown2005-10-15 02:16:20
I think you're in the wrong thread there, Guido. This is for Wheel of Time. aSoIaF is over there.
Revan2005-10-15 02:34:32
Well, there's hot Rand, Elayne, Aviendha and Min action... I think.... *shifty*
Unknown2005-10-15 02:36:46
Omg foursome.
On that note, christ. Rand is worse than I am.

I'd kill to be in Rand's place. Have 3 wives, kill lots of people and then be treated to a soldier's death (yet to be seen)

We're not really sure if he dies or not.
All we know is he'll lose blood - but that happens a lot, what with the Shadar Logoth dagger wound and all.

It's not out over here yet, I -think-. I picked up a catalog from the bookstore on Thursday (two days ago) and it said it was coming soon.
And I'm sure they'd have made a bigger deal out of it if it were.

Just bought the 10th book in softcover. Still trying to finish it, just because I started reading the books and I need to finish what I start.
It's just a bunch of equivocal situations artifially forced. Everybody in the "goods" side acts and reacts based on what they think the other is doing. Considering they have (almost all) means to talk among them (dreamwalking, instatravelling, telepathy, it's like lusternia) half the situations in the book have no sense. It's like everybody trying to outthink the other when, hey, they could just ask them why are they doing what they're doing!.
And Rand is supposed to die and live again. Said it somewhere in one of the books.
Would have done well in a 3-4 books set. 12 or more it's just writing more to have something to pay the bills.
PS: Sorry if there's any WoT fanatic around. I am reading them all, so I am not talking just to troll your beliefs

its out in paperback in Australia, at least my copy is - so NYAH. I have had it for a while now and just couldn't be bothered reading it (thought I didn't have it - but it turns out I did, but I was so drunk I forgot I actually bought it).

I used to play the WoT mud back in the day. If anyone remembers Lady Alliasce, the Great Wisdom, that was me. So many good times there. But eventually, I just got tired of it.
