Anyone may learn the artisan trade skill. This craft generally involves
the construction of furniture, though it does allow the creation of some
smaller items that may be carried, such as pipes. Furniture usually
involves a significant amount of commodities to craft, thus making this
trade skill extremely expensive. However, furniture is much in demand by
those with manses as well as guilds, cities and communes. At some point
during the career of an artisan, the master artisan will so value one of
piece of furniture that he or she created that a special bond will be
formed between them.

Now this says we can make smaller items such as pipes and yadda, which basically includes baskets and boxes, but what about other items, such as toys, dolls and the like, i mean, they're also constructed, and it'd bring in an aspect of Artisan of which it doesn't cost 50K or so to get one item which is actually half decent looking, and 200K to furnish a room to look good.
With this also it would allow you to if we can make dolls, to place them upon smalltables actually giving some of the lesser skills actually do something worth while, since who would actually use a smalltable since it does nothing, i mean you could fit two chests in the area you need for a smalltable. If the dolls or item was placed upon it, it could actually show in the furniture description as. A smalltable stands here, a small doll resembling *person/thing* is placed upon it.
Obviously these dolls wouldn't actually do anything like the one Ialie has, since that would make hers worthless, or most likely be crafted of the Divine, but even if it's not dolls, toys would be a good thing to have in Artisan, since basically now it's useless, it costs too much, and the only really good things out of it are the longer lasting pipes, thrones, desk n chair, and large tables.

Sounds good to me!

This is a solid idea, but can you think of even more nice little things to add?
(The more the merrier, even if they can't all be done. )

I was actually trying to develop another skillset with all kinds of details to submit to You guys, but I suppose it could actually be a part of artisan...
The dolls thing has always been one that I wanted, and would work like this:
You'd either have to be standing in front of the person, or have two sketches of them. You'd craft the doll, which would have a slightly different comm cost by which race they were (for shapeshifters, it would be the current race). It would copy their description much like a statue. The dolls wouldn't really do anything, but they'd be neat to have around.
Also, music boxes. When making the design for them, you'd have one or two lines of written music in a new design slot. You might play the anthem of Magnagora, or you might make fun of your least favorite person.
Bouncing balls would also be neat, you'd be able to bounce ball, which would show whatever it was in the design (you throw a red ball downwards, it hits the ground with a "boing!" and bounces back up). You could also bounce it really hard or something, and in an ourdoors area, a flyer would be able to briefly see it, and it would fall back to the ground. Lastly, you could bounce it $dir and it would go as far as there were rooms in that direction, going from room to room at a certain speed, slowing down at a certain rate until it will no longer move, even if there are rooms in that direction.
I had some more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I'd like to see dolls be based off of cartel designs, as well.
Maybe puppets! Oo, sock puppets. and paper finger puppets. YAY.

Some of these could be in Arts, some in Artisans.
Small Toys (Dolls, Puppets, etc. Some could be animated or little clockworks)
Hair Brushes and Combs, or maybe also hair decorations like ribbons or bows.
Spectacles (non-magical--or perhaps enchantable)
Candles, Lanterns, and Torches--self explanatory.
Brooms, Mops, Dustpans, Rakes
Wastebaskets--put something in, decays instantly. Great since we have no Humgiis in this realm.
Yoke--attach two buckets to it, good for forrest fires.
Signs--Post a sign outdoors on a road or outside a shop--or maybe carry around one--"only 16 more days until the end of the world"
Crowbars and Lockpicks--assist in opening locked doors.
Sigils and Coat of Arms--Design Heraldry!
I have other ideas but I don't know if they would count as a hypothetical engineering skill.

Maybe some things like decrative boxes, jewerlry boxes perhaps, that are smaller but keep jewelry inside from decaying as fast.

I like these ideas, except for wastebaskets. We do have a humgii - its called a nexus.

Yes, but that's not really enough. You should have a wastebasket in a village, for instance, or a manse.
Ialie2005-10-16 20:41:33
I think a donation basket would be nice. A place to put old gear that you dom't need or want that only novices could get into. Doesn't matter if it is abused by alts because no one wants it anyway.

Flags. All this national unity and NO flags!? Insane.
And if we get dolls, the Clothing makers will HAVE to be allowed to make doll clothes.
Play dress up!

Great idea- I'd enjoy seeing more PC-created roleplay props. In a RP-enforced game, people -will- pay decent coin for interesting, cool things unrelated to bashing/PvP.
Here are some more ideas for the Artisan/crafting pile: spectacles, canes, dice, playing cards, chess sets, flasks, snuff boxes, and hookahs.

Wastebaskets are too modern.
And no no no to the heraldry. Always hated Achaean heraldry, it served no purpose.

With the toys and such, i was kind of hoping that instead of having them in different skills, such as dolls, or crap, just having them as one skill, Toymaking, and having different patterns for them, that link all together under one skill. These items would include, non animated dolls, wooden toys such as minature rocking horses or small wooden sculptures, puppets could come under a different category to dolls i guess, and yes, i was thinking about that this morning, if we have dolls, tailors should be able to make dolls and puppet clothes.

Lockpicks and crowbars would encourage thieves and well everyone really gets pissed off at thieves here, so it'd really be a bad idea.
Most of those ideas would go into arts, because most of them arn't a type of construction, well construction that an artisan would do, lanterns candles and such would all probably come under arts, and well arts from what i've heard is lacking some skills, though if those skills went into arts, they'd just be generic ones.
Then again, if there was a good system for night, as in you could barely see, some of those items would be very useful, i'd love to be able to create most of those items, but they're not really what i would consider artisan, more arts. Since i'm not trying to flood artisan and make it something different then furniture, i just thought the idea of small toys and such would give us something to make and stock shops with while we wait for rich people to contact us for our highly overpriced furniture.
Having signs would be... annoying after a while because you'd just have every room with stupid ones, i mean it'd be like graffiti but worse, they're stuck there.

Hmm... I would like to see bookstands. For example.. Let's say I use a book as a catalogue for my trade, I can have a bookstand placed at my shop front and put the book on top of it. Only the author(s) of the book may pick the book off of the bookstand in order to write in it again. Hehe

Heraldry was awesome, wish I had been able to afford it.
Flags would be GREAT, but I'd think that would be in Tailoring.

Fetishes (the Voodoo kind, sickos), poppets, wind chimes, dreamcatchers (non-dreamweaver ones), small water features, hand puzzles.
