Speaking into the wind

This is a minor thing, but would it be possible to see when the wind takes away what you were going to say? I'd just rather not to have to trigger the message to tell the person to speak again.

How about a Capable-level environment ability that appends a message to your says when the wind interferes, eg.

You try to say, "I think I'm going to head to a less windy spot." but the howling gale drowns out your words.

Sort of like a lesser version of windtalk.

Why even make it a skill? Just.. standard.
Kiarlea2005-10-22 04:23:55
Pretty please? cookie.gif

I could remove my wind trigger if you did this! And cut down on spam! happy.gif
Acrune2005-10-22 04:28:02
Would be nice, but doesn't really make sense. You wouldn't really know that you aren't being heard over the wind unless you were told by someone that they couldn't hear you. And there better not be any new environment skills to bump tumble away from me angry.gif I already had to get shield parry back once because of the envenoming skill being moved tongue.gif

Apparently you have never been to a rock concert and tried to speak at a normal volume level. If they can't hear you, odds are you can't hear yourself either, or if you can you will notice very quickly that your voice is muffled and barely audible.
Sylphas2005-10-22 08:34:16
At work, it's noisy, and we have to wear earplugs. We're all in the habit of nodding and smiling and not having a clue what the other person is saying, and we're all highly aware of it. Trust me, you know.
Munsia2005-10-22 09:03:00
Ya but if your wind is drowned out by the voice.. noone else hears you try to say something
Kiarlea2005-10-22 10:29:25
If they're looking, they'll see you try to speak.

Edit: though, that's forcing you to be looking, I suppose.

Also, doesn't it seem odd that it's always -so- windy that your voice will be drowned out?
Sylphas2005-10-22 17:32:34
And really, that's a LOT of wind. Like, tornados, hurricanes, massive storms with lots of rain and wind and stuff. Normal wind isn't all that loud.
Acrune2005-10-23 00:22:06
It doesn't have to be loud. Wind can carry sound away without drowning it out. Sound carries better with the wind, and not as well against it.

Even a moderate wind can produce a deafening howl, particularly in mountains, woods, cities, and valleys
Kiarlea2005-10-23 06:52:29
My main problem with your comment is that it -doesn't- cause problems ANYWHERE but mountains and hills. Not in the woods. Not in the valleys. Not in the cities. Not in the communes.
Sylphas2005-10-23 07:13:50
That is odd. Wind strong enough to rip people from tree limbs is unnoticable otherwise, and otherwise unnoticable wind is enough to steal your voice.
Gwylifar2005-10-23 14:41:46
What's more, it doesn't just steal your voice, it steals your lips. That's the only explanation for why lipreading doesn't work in the wind. Somewhere on Avechna's Peak is a huge pile of wind-shorn lips.

Happens on the roads too, I believe.

Actually, you can't fly in the mountains- the wind's too strong. So it is seen other ways... unsure.gif

I've flown in the mountains before. There have been places I couldn't, but pretty sure I did in the southern Razines once. MAybe I was on the road though.

If you fly before you get to the mountains, you can keep on flying. Until really strong winds come along and smash you into the ground, at least. That hurts.

Brooch of the Tempest. Wind does nothing to me but steal my words. biggrin.gif
