It annoys me that Lusternia has no Heraldry even though it would be more interesting here than in other IRE muds, since everyone has access to tradeskills.
Picture this:
You'd go to Avechna's peak and buy a coat of arms for yourself or an organization you're head of. Then tailors can embroider the coat of arms on clothing, jewelers can engrave it, artisans can mark it on furniture, and bookbinders can seal books with a coat of arms. Signet rings would be like engagement rings: expensive, and don't decay. They'd be able to mark a letter with a coat of arms, proving that you were the one who wrote the letter (Since right now you have no way of proving authorship of a letter). Artifact signet rings would be able to mark your coat of arms on any object. Artists would be able to make paintings with someone's coat of arms on it, and artisans would be able to make complete achievements of arms for hanging above the fireplace. Tapestries, flags and pennons with coats of arms would be made by tailors.

Thats a really good idea, it would add more flavour to trade skills for sure.
Kiarlea2005-10-23 07:30:58
No.
No.
No heraldry.
No!
No.

No!
Kharne2005-10-23 07:31:44
Why not?
Kiarlea2005-10-23 07:32:42
We're not Achaea, don't take Achaean ideas please. I left Achaea cause of stupid things like that.
You pay a fortune and get this.
She bears the arms: Argent, a wolf courant contourny Sable within a bordure
rayonny Gules.
No offense, but it just sucks, IMO.
Edit: It makes NO sense unless you're a Herald. Or study it for some obscure reason. It turned into just another honours line to have. Why bother? Be original, have something privately crafted rather than turning it into a useless system.

Then don't buy it. The point of heraldry is that it's a roleplay device, it's a personal symbol that has deep meaning in a medieval society, but people who don't care for it don't need it. People look at something with 'Sable, an estoile Argent in dexter chief' and can immediately identify it as belonging to me, or I can place an achievement of arms with 'Sable, on a chief Azure, a wolf's head Argent' in the fulcrux room of Kalidasha's manse to identify it as the Stormwolf family manse.

I don't think Lusternia's admin would make something that silly. What if it was just a symbol described in common english? Like the symbols that each of the gods have. "Her symbol is a silver chalice wreathed in ethereal vines."
Edit: Not that it would be an honors line, but you could buy the signet ring Verithrax was talking about to be able to imprint it on various items.

That's a blazon, an unanbiguous description of a coat of arms. Heraldry is a formalized system, so there's a specific jargon for describing a coat of arms without ambiguity. It's actually quite simple, look it up in Wikipedia.
Unknown2005-10-23 07:46:51
Oh, if you mean formal medieval heraldry, then I'm against the idea too.
This isn't Lusternia: The Middle Ages.

I don't see why the hatred for Heraldry. It was neat in Achaea, but it's not like you had to deal with it really.
Astraea2005-10-23 07:54:45
I'm going to have to agree with Kiarlea. Heraldry was one of my least favorite things on Achaea. You pay like 5000000 gold to get a coat of arms on your shield. Just put a coat of arms into your description if you want it so badly. You could have it tattoed onto your forehead, for instance.

I really don't think you get the deep significance a coat of arms had and still has in some places. You only got one if you were nobility or someone highly placed. And you DIDN'T get it just to have a pretty picture.

Except everyone and their grandmother had it on Achaea. It was not special at all.
Unknown2005-10-23 08:03:13
I actually hated Heraldry in Achaea - it was so gross and uncouth. Don't tell Erion's old flame, though. I think I complimented him on it once or twice.

So? It's something for people who want it, and just another thing that doesn't matter much to everyone else.
Kiarlea2005-10-23 08:21:36
No, it's annoying and useless, a waste of gold, and hurts my eyes when I honours people or HELP . At least, it used to be, not sure if the Houses have it now or what.
Use the systems ALREADY IN PLACE, create a PRIVATE DESIGN, and you can put anything you like on it, if you pay enough. And it's STILL CHEAPER than Achaean heraldry was.

Unknown2005-10-23 08:42:49
Yeah I don't see the need for it. Keep to the design system we have.
Unknown2005-10-23 08:46:56
Agreed - No need for Heraldry.
Sylphas2005-10-23 08:50:45
There's no NEED for a lot of things. And private designs aren't at all the same, which is what I was trying to point out.
Unknown2005-10-23 08:51:51
You know, with Heraldry, you'd have more idea about what it meant if it was just a random jumble of letters put in, it was evil, worthless, and i mean, wow if you want to have pieces of clothing with your family thing on them, get a TM tailor to make you a private you only design, it'd be cheaper as well.
