Is alchemy still worth it if you are not trans?
Vix2005-10-26 00:23:29
Not really. It's handy when you can make your own stuff, but with kegs it's a lot easier to find refills. You don't make much money anyways.
Sylphas2005-10-26 06:50:24
Kegs killed it for a majority of the alchemic population.
Narsrim2005-10-26 07:14:14
Of course, it is always nice to be an alchemist for yourself and the philosopher stone is amazing.
Sylphas2005-10-26 07:25:02
Mhmm. Alchemy is pretty much like any other tradeskill now. Don't do it for the money, do it for being helpful, helping yourself, and the trans skill.
Morik2005-10-26 09:45:59
yup. herbs is about the only trade skill where being non-trans doesn't matter one bit. Doesn't that suck?
Jewellery: trans+hammer, noone else will buy from you. Gems were, when I tried, hard to come by, and noone wanted to buy anything from you at more than 50 gp per cut gem.
Alchemy: Although being a Glom alchemist can be useful, kegs has killed this. A couple of well-stocked trans alchemists can supply a city, screwing things for the non-trans refillers who only fill to 50 sips.
Tailoring: screwed if you're enemied to magnagora. screwed if you're not high, as noone wants to buy stuff that lasts 8 months. Playerbase isn't big enough to support a whole lot of tailors, the items trans tailors make last long enough to make it not worth buying elsewhere.
Haven't tried cooking or poisons. Haven't tried enchantment, but I believe needing virt+ in highmagic to enchant mercy/perfection makes things doubly difficult.
Herbs, and here's what I love:
* the low skills all matter,
* the high skill has nothing to do with your ability to harvest
So how, exactly, can you join the trade ranks without near-transing a skill first?

Yup, for enchanters, it doesn't matter who fills the cubes, for one; and for two you still need 1 charge on something to enchant it, so they arn't out of business. Alchemists though... if you arn't trans, and arn't in contact with a store owner, you had better start reducing your prices to attract some business.
hmm, I just thought of something, never again can there be an effective alchemy ban on a specific place, for 1 alchemst in Magnagora or even Celest, could refill, through this, for the whole city.

Except its a near trans skill to charge the cubes, where any alchemist can fill a keg if they can do the potion.

Yeah... a charge. Even if the enchanter refuses to put just one charge on things, 10-50 charges for every peice of jewelry the customer owns isn't that much considering its maybe 3 real months or more before you'll be seeing them again.

I don't think being trans alchemy affects kegs, unless Selthar's shop has some one else filling the kegs.

Aren't any alchemists in the cities. Unless you meant alchemists helping Magnagora or Celest. Alchemy bans would still have an affect, just a smaller one, because it would be tricky to find refills for the kegs, and more expensive as well.
On top of all that, I haven't seen any of the cures in kegs yet, so alchemists still have all those to fill as well.

Wait till I cross that off my to-do list.

Herbs don't need trans but are uggy if you're not high. Many of the more asked for herbs are closer to the top of the list firstly. Secondly, actualy GETTING the herbs is a big issue. For us having a big ocean in the middle of the world, Sargassum is rather hard to find in large quantities, for example. If you don't mind spending the whole day hunting for herbs, planting half you find back into the ground in empty spots, and harvesting the rest you'll do fine.
