Since i have been looking for a cool superhero rpg for a while now that you could create your own hero. These seem like the perfect games for me. Anyone have them and able to give me some feed back on weither they are worth it or to just keep waiting for somthing else?

It really depends. I'd been playing it from Retail release up until just before CoV was released, so I'm probably qualified enough to talk about it.

I just dropped my subscription to it due to changes that have been made over the past couple of months. The game is fun if you enjoy PvE, but PvP is still pretty unbalanced and likely always will be due to how the game was made. The downside is that the only thing there is to do is PvE. You hunt, you get experience, you earn new powers, repeat. 50 levels to grind out, though the highest I've ever gotten is level 35 on my Scrapper (which is now pointless to play due to how many times that character's been nerfed).

Do I like the games? Yeah, but I won't play them again until there's much more to do and some of the recent changes have been better balanced and don't leave me feeling like a complete civilian gimp rather than a superhero engine of destr...arresting. ::coughs::

I'd recommend it, but a lot of the playerbase is feeling betrayed right now, and at least a couple have left, myself included. In the end, it's really up to you. See if you can't find someone with a free trial to burn, that would be your best option. I used to have like three of them, but I never held onto them because I have no friends. >.<

so its a online game? is there any one player story mode type thing to it?
Daganev2005-11-14 20:30:21
Any game that requires a monthly fee to pay just isn't worth it in my opinion. And there is no single player version of city of heros. However there was this GREAT comic book type game which inspired city of heros... wish I could remember its name.

I'm more inclined to agree with the "monthly fee is bad" group, but for the people that can afford it, I'm sure the game offers a great experience. There are lots of subscription based games, none of which I've played, but I'm sure they are just as fun as the free ones. The only difference is you don't have to shell out $15 a month.

Thankfully there are games like TES4:Oblivion. biggrin.gif Now, if only they'll stop pushing back the release date. angry.gif

CoH/CoV is never offline. It's not like Phantasy Star Online in any sense of the word. MMORPG's do not have offline modes, only online. Reduces the level of cheating and hacking that occurs with that particular methodology.

Yeah, subscription models are kind of a pain to work with. I'm something of an MMORPG junkie so I can always find a way to make them work eventually, but I've yet to find one that is just what I'm looking for.

There is a hero based PnP game out there, but I've never played with it. The only PnP systems I've had a chance to play with are D&D 3.0/3.5, Shadowrun 3rd(fave!), and Harn. I have a bunch of Exalted stuff, but I don't know anyone who knows how to run White Wolf systems. Pain in the arse. Meh.

My forum-sense detected the word "oblivion". *stamp of approval*
Marcalo2005-11-14 22:12:56
ahh well then screw that, i am not going to shell out 20 bucks and 60 bucks only to keep having to pay to play the damn thing, and as it looks i am now part of the herd waiting for oblivion to come out.

Game I was thinking of is Freedom Force... great game

You can download the demo there.

Well, 12€ a month, that means around 2 at the most 3 beers... I consider that quite affordable way of entertaining myself, as I spend more in just an afternoon in the cinema or in books smile.gif Not to talk about dinners...

I prefer that to the credits model, that says "you can play for free but to be good you need to have 10h free a day and exhaustive dedication, or you can just put 500$ out of your pocket to get the nifty skills". But I think the game should be downloadable, as otherwise you pay for the CDs adn then for the suscription. I guess it's to cover development costs.

Ugh the only P2P game i would ever pay for atm is WoW (go acronyms) for one reason alone

They were nice enough to actually sell their pre-paid cards in australia, it really annoys me when a MMORPG that either ignores people without credit cards, or only give the pre-paid option to people in america.

Your loss, Saran...

::shivers and mutters bad things about WoW::
Marcalo2005-11-15 16:47:38
Its not the price per month that bothers me. Its the fact the game to buy is 60 dollars. Then each month you have to pay like 10-30 bucks depending on the game. To me the game should either be free, then you pay per month. Or have no pay per month charge and cost a little more.
Saran2005-11-15 17:19:18
I do mean mainly because i can't pay for any of the others and i'm not paying 100 AUD to play something for only a month, Oh and i forgot about Guild Wars thats fun and the developers did something smart with the instancing

though some of the others really need to take a look at MUD features *shudders at the WoW "skillsets"* (ugh why not just enhance the skill rather than just giving ten versions of the same one or make them stronger through training like Guild Wars)
Marcalo2005-11-15 17:29:30
Thats another game i was looking at GuildWars is that a online only game?
Saran2005-11-15 17:33:22
yeah but it's been done better than the others apparently.

You only go to level 20 but thats not the important bit. what matters is how you play your class combination, how well you use your skills and how good you are in a team.

You can actually go "PvP" and just play the arena games at level 20 or go RP and level up. you have to gain skills in rp to equip them to your PvP characters.

The entire thing is focused around group combat and actual-skill.
Richter2005-11-15 18:04:46
I think it would be neat to have the games for free (or like $10) and then have it all paid for by the monthly fee. Only problem is, they'd have to jack up the monthly cost to something we won't want to pay (like $30 a month). Imagine their loss of several million units * $60.
Rauros2005-11-15 18:07:04
Just because there are only 20 levels in Guildwars, it doesnt mean youre done with the game once you hit that level. You'll reach level 20 long before you finish the main storyline.

And GW has a one time fee, $50, the cost to buy it. No monthly subscription, and free updates. It's actually quite a deal, and is dial-up friendly (which is the main reason why I bought it).

Yes, GW is online-only. But it's dial-up friendly.

Guild Wars is also incredibly boring and frustrating to play if you don't have people to play it with. I was a beta tester for the game since the November World Preview Event, and played the game for about three months after it was released. Having been unable to find a decent guild and with friends dropping like flies, the game has sat inactive on my hard drive for the last half year.

Be very wary of buying the game, and do your research. It can be fun, but it's not for everyone.
Marcalo2005-11-15 18:23:40
So guildwars is a online game, but no subscription cost? hmmm if thats so i might look into getting it. I like being a loaner in games i don't like having parties so if i can get away with it i won't ever form a party.
