Is there any designated area for young players after newton? I've been told to rat to level 30 and while I have found a few other things to do such as pilgrims and scholars, pretty much the only options I have found are the totally utterly mind-numbingly boring task of IRE ratting, or walking 10,000 rooms with half-handful of pilgrims/scholars. Neither are very much fun and I find myself being really put off by Lusternia right now.
Orcs at the shallac ruins were mentioned here. I tried, and was told to .. um rat to level 30. Rockeaters kill me in like two hits so while i could probably manage with some luck, that doesn't seem to actually work despite the comments here.
Is there nothing like "The Rock" or the desert in Achaea?

Toronada tidal flats are pretty decent for that level. Surprised you can't handle rockeaters though. I killed rockeaters to get to level 30, myself.

I tried one at like level 22. My lack of any armor (robes I guess? not that I can find much of anything in the way of armor in my city's shops) probably contributed. Maybe at level 25 it will be a little easier.

When you don't have a lot of health (if you're a faeling, for example) Rockeaters can be hard at first. I always used to invoke a circle between nature curses so I'd have time to take the two or so sips of health I'd need after getting hit by the Rockeater.
Just alternate hitting with shielding so you can heal up and having a trigger to stand is a good idea too.
And yeah, the Tidal Flats are a good place to go.

The village quests are pretty good at low levels.
Hajamin2005-12-04 01:25:04
Ratting is the worst and slowest option you have.
Xavius2005-12-04 01:39:44
People usually suggest ratting because it's the safest.
What you can kill depends a lot on how patient, quick, and skilled you are. I know Galvadore was fighting sharks and starsuckers right around level 30. Personally, I found questing to be the best option at that level. I can run from area to area pretty quickly. Power quests, pilgrims, scholars, some of the non-commodity village quests, and the like (the comm ones are either no or very little experience). Really, it's just a matter of what you can handle.

I got the levels 20 to 30 as a Viscanti from ratting.

Also depends on what class you are. Gatchel's using cosmicfire...Anyways stright out of Newton at level 21 I bashed at the toronada tidal flats, up to around lvl 30 or 40. Start with the birds, and when you get stronger go on to crabs and turtles. Turtles cause heavy bleeding while crabs break bones, so make sure you're preapred for that. With pentagram it should be alright, though I did a few times to crabs during those levels...
Galatae2005-12-04 01:45:51
I got most of my levels from 21-30 by cows and pilgrims (and now scholars, but those didn't exist back then), as well as by quests such as capturing shadows for my commune, then by rockeaters.
Unknown2005-12-04 01:46:05
I got from level 2 to level 45 just on ratting since everywhere else was always bashed out.

So was Galvadore.
Then again he was merian...maybe different for Gatchel, since he's not that or mugwump.

Low-level Xavius was a Celestine. So was Galvadore. Cosmicfire's bad, but it's not horrid. It's just a touch stronger than a longsword combo.

If you have low health, like a faeling, do not go to the tidal flats. The crabs there hit me pretty decently, and I'm at level 50.
Village quests are your friends, and influencing to. All my experienced gained so far has been through quests and influencing and a tiny bit of weeviling.

Actually, I found Balach Swamps to be quite good for it. The gold is lousy, but you don't need health or mana vials. Just blast away until you're wounded too much, or too low on mana, then Circle/Pentagram, and sleep/meditate until you're ready to go again. Even in the middle of combat.
Nokraenom2005-12-04 02:39:35
Whoever told you to go ratting is going to get slapped when I find them.
There's plenty of things to do: village quests, the tidal flats, the seas (with shielding), grubs on earth (with shielding), etc.

i should add that the second time, i was trying orcs in the ruins of shallach and i think it was intended as friendly helpful advice to keep me from getting dead.
and i misquoted in my earlier post. oops

Orcs are great from level 21 to 40-50. Start off on braves, then move on to archers. Warriors and elders can be tricky, and don't attack any Ur'dead unless you want to die AND tick off Magnagora.
Jack2005-12-04 05:08:45
ur'Dead Knights are easy as hell. Just get them when there's only two or so in the room, as they team.
Troopers are hard, though.
Right about the pissing-off-Magnagora part, however.
