Lusternia with graphics or not?

Back to The Real World.

What do you think? How would you want it?
Unknown2006-01-06 00:19:48
Uh... can we add a "This is impossible." option? Because it's just.. impossible.
Suhnaye2006-01-06 00:24:26
I'm gunna go with the "Its impossible option" for reality. But for a nice fantasy... I think if it was insanely well done, very expensive, and well maintained, Lusternia would be amazing with 3D graphics and would blow WoW out of the water. Just my oppinion of course.
Unknown2006-01-06 00:24:56
And since when does everything have to be possible? Think outside of the box, how would you want it?

EDIT: Damn Suhnaye you beat me by 2 seconds! But I gotta agree with you World of warcraft wouldn't stand a chance!
Unknown2006-01-06 00:26:17
And I think it would be possible. But it would be something different.
Verithrax2006-01-06 00:31:03
First, this is impossible.
Second, it would SUCK. Roleplay is simply impossible in a graphic game with anything short of a full-body motion detection suit. How am I supposed to do custom emotes?
Unknown2006-01-06 00:54:54
First of all nothing is impossible just less possible:P
And i for my share don't think it would suck...
What if it was a bit like lands of lore? I thought that game was quite good.
Yuniko2006-01-06 00:58:09
I prefer all text....

Because yes, the emotes. Can't live without them! But seeing a game with great graphics and skills like Lusternia....> WoW

Take an animation class, write a script to order the bodypart junctions to move in certain ways at certain times, with accompanied text? smile.gif

I've always preferred textual virtual worlds to graphical ones, simply because the only limit to text is your imagination. Graphical worlds require that anything that happens be drawn and planned well ahead of time.

As an example, how would I cast illusions or dreams in a 3d graphical world? The only way it could be done is to have a preset list of illusions and I have to choose one of them. Ugh. And what about our tradeskills? Would creativity become the domain of computer experts who possess advanced modelling skills? Not to mention that all the excitement and intricacy of IRE combat would be lost, as there's no way you can command that level of precision action and reaction when you have distance, direction and physical limitations to consider.

I'm firmly in the NO WAY camp. wink.gif

Yeah, I'm sure I can hire one of the three people in the world who are capable of doing this on the fly.
Richter2006-01-06 03:46:56
If it could be done, with no loss of roleplay, or anything else, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I only play Lusternia because this world is so much deeper than something like WoW can offer.

Me too. Sadly, I think we'll have to wait until technology advances to the holodeck level before we have graphical Lusternia.

I'd just like to point out that IRE is -hiring- a full time artist to lead a team. They announced looking for applications on TMS. So, expect good things to come.
Roark2006-01-06 19:38:21
Bearing in mind what Roark looks like, do you really want a graphics engine to render that in full detail?
Unknown2006-01-06 20:59:08
Actually, I was thinking about something similar.

I used to play the Simu games (DragonRealms, GemStone, etc). The clients they offer had pics and maps in them. Like if you LOOK RAT, a drawing of a rat would pop up. Also, you could commission one of their artists to draw a portrait of your character. Then, when you LOOK PLAYER the drawing would pop up along with their written description.

That's probably for the website for IRE's next game, they'll need race illustrations, for example. But, possibly, they're preparing to fully illustrate a lot of material, maybe for other IRE games too.
tsaephai2006-01-06 23:25:52
i think a solution to this would be to make it so it's a two-d game, and so that you don't actually see the character, but you see a map and it shows items and little things of where the characters would be. then have text accompany it.
of course, i think i would prefer text even if a full working graphical one would be capable.
Lisaera2006-01-06 23:52:12
Elryn listed a bunch of the stuff we'd have to drop if we did want to make Lusternia fully graphical, and for that reason it wouldn't happen - you don't convert a text game to a graphical game because it isn't just a difference in presentation, it's a difference in the whole structure of the world.

If we were going to make a graphical Lusternia, the smartest option would be to just take the idea of the world, history and organisations and build a brand new game.
Daganev2006-01-07 00:45:03
Where can I find this information about them hiring an artist???
