Guild file restrictions

It would be nice if you could lock certain guildfiles out until a member has reached a position like undersec, this would help with file secrecy instead of needing a new clan.
Richter2006-01-25 18:03:48
Excellent idea!
Cwin2006-01-25 18:32:12
Not bad. There's a workaround though: Books.

Any information I want only for a particular group (i.e. only Undersecs) I make into a book and hand out copies to the applicable people. It's actually pretty nice to have, especialy since the multiple pages allows for organization without the MASS-O help files (My guide for Undersecretaries would be 8 seperate ghelps.. UGG). True, people can share that book with others, but that's no more difficult than copy-pasting a ghelp file.

It also helps promote the poor bookbinder trade.

Only problem is finding a blasted bookbinder. ranting.gif

Yeah... thats what libraries are for *peer* Wheres my bookshelf!?
Richter2006-01-25 19:02:33
I got just three bookshelves, and then was told each book I put in it was going to cost Seventeen Thousand Gold (in Aetolia it was 250 sad.gif ).

I think helpfiles are a much more cost effective solution.
Cwin2006-01-25 19:12:59
Is that the cost of the book or the cost to add it to the library? If it's the former then go for Journals I say: same pages, yet MUCH cheaper.

If the latter. Ikk. It'll be a long time before I get a library.

Still, I prefer books overall. It's a personal opinion though.
Unknown2006-01-25 19:22:03
Can you restrict access in guild libraries? And is it as expensive to publish a book as regular libraries?

I actually like Cwin's idea. I'm just not totally sure how guild libraries work.
Richter2006-01-25 19:35:01
I heard that to make a copy of an existing book, and put it in my library, it would be 17k. 10k for the outlay(?) and 7k for comms, free to put into the library. Nerf book costs.
Cwin2006-01-25 20:04:53
Bah. That's the price of a 'Book'. There are also journals, which work VERY similarly (including having 50 pages) and is MUCH cheaper in comms and outlay. Also, if you don't need that many pages, you can get something smaller: the smaller the product, the cheaper the price, comm and outlay both. A 2 page document only needs a Pamphlet, which I know is pretty cheap for what you get.

Edit: FINALY figured it out. There are two overall types of 'books': Personal and Organizational. Personal ones are the cheaper types, like journals, that can only be written on by YOU.

Organizational ones, like the official 'book', are linked to the Group: A Guild book can be written by the current Administrator and anyone marked an Archivist, for example. They are more expensive, but are meant to be major group purchases.

They work the same otherwise, so most times you only need a Personal item.

Blah, I'll simplify it for you: Ask the bookbinder to make a Journal for big items, and a Pamphlet(sp?) for small things. That'll do for 99% of you folks out there and it won't break the bank.

And, yes, any type can go into a library.

As for Guild libraries (and Manse ones, like for Deepnight, or Order ones), they have three levels of secrecy (Public/Restricted/Private, in order) that books can be put under. Manse libraries give everyone Public access while Guild/Order libraries give their guild/ordermates Public. Librarians can then give individuals access to the more secretive levels.

So, you can have a Guild library, give Restricted access to the lower officers (Undersecs, Secs, Prots, Security) and give Private access to the leaders.

Myself, I may have a library sometime, but right now I'm content just holding the master copy of a book and sending copies to whoever needs it. It's pretty nice realy.
Richter2006-01-25 20:10:57
Oh, so I gave some credits to boost his skills to "books" for no reason, hrm.

If you have a master copy of the book, does it cost less to make a copy, or is it still the full price? And what's the cost for a journal?
Unknown2006-01-25 20:33:38
Copying a book involves just commodities, and I think ink. That's all.

Seek out Tully--might have to wait until the weekend though. He's transcendent and he sometimes does this stuff for free, including commodities. He's made free books for Marina (gonna miss her), Elcyrion, Isune, Ialie, some Serenwilders, and Magnagorans. That's usually where my money earned from credits goes.
Unknown2006-01-25 21:34:32
Um, Richter, you're getting screwed.

To make a copy of an existing book, it takes a Mythical Bookbinder (to use the Printing Press), and there is NO outlay fee. Just commodities and some magical ink. To create a new book, yes, that's 17k.
Richter2006-01-25 21:35:38
Hrm, I've always wanted to switch to bookbinding. Pity we can't have more than one tradeskill. sad.gif
Cwin2006-01-25 21:49:43
Well, the smallest personal book is a Scroll (not sure how many pages it can hold, I'm guessing 1) which is 1200 for the outlay. Journals take 6000 for the gold outlay, and I think hold around 20 pages. The comms for both depend on the style but more than 5 wood, a few other things, and perhaps some ink is crasy imo. As others have said, the Gold outlay is only for the Master: copies just cost the comms.

Yes, you were ripped off, unless you plan on writing a 50+ page book.

As for the tradeskill, unless other leaders start modeling me in how they organize information, Bookbinding won't sell well: It's useful, but too many folks are too used to 'Gfile it, Project it, Post it, or Forget it'. At least the Culture system will keep the poor folks from starving (and, again, people like me who can find plenty of uses for them).

Pretty much.

Maybe I should actually come on and use my Bookbinding skills. disappear.gif Mwahaha.. uninformed population = $_$
Richter2006-01-25 23:27:36
Good thing I was so appalled that I never bought any. And yeah, you should log on every once in a while. Dad needs you. happy.gif
Shiri2006-01-26 00:34:26
Well you can buy copies of books, which costs comms and ink, but you can't then change the original and not have the copy change too, so...you'll have to buy a new book if you want to actually write anything new in it.
Unknown2006-01-26 14:38:23
Plus you can't copy a sealed book.
Shiri2006-01-26 14:39:51
That too. And all the NPC books are sealed, AFAIK.

EDIT: Jacquin, come to Serenwilde. biggrin.gif

Someone wants copies of an NPC book? blink.gif

(off topic)
A part of me wishes I made Jacquin in Serenwilde, actually. She'd be a VERY different person but her overall style would remain and she would fit in the commune.

Alas, her story's written in Magnagora, and I think the Ur'Guard would drag me back kicking and screaming if I left them. Besides, I couldn't dare leave Lyco. wub.gif
