My calendar says it's Australia Day.

I've never heard of it! One of you Aussies explain.
Vix2006-01-26 22:40:44
Founding of Australia? Independence from Britain? Sydney Olympics?
Unknown2006-01-26 22:41:45
It's also called Invasion Day by some of our indigenous population. tongue.gif

January 26, 1788 is when the penal colony of New South Wales was established after the British shipped all their riff-raff over here (or something like that). New South Wales is one of our states now.

So on this day, Aussies all lounge about, cook barbeques and drink cold beer, and celebrate everything ocker.

I really, really despise it. I -hate- blind patriotism in theory, and I detest most of the 'true blue Aussie' stereotypes.

Unknown2006-01-26 22:49:37
Heh, I decided to make sushi and go see a gay western. I thought that was sufficiently deviant. cool.gif
Richter2006-01-26 22:49:45
How's that Australian?
Unknown2006-01-26 22:50:12
I think that was sarcasm, Richter. tongue.gif
Vix2006-01-26 22:50:57
So what're -you- doing, Murphy, on this fine Australia Day?

Oh, I was gonna say, I slack off while working too! Most of my 5600 posts or so were from work! I'm Australian now!

Incidentally, we're still not independent from Britain. wink.gif

Tsk. I pity you.
Richter2006-01-27 00:03:10
Ha, we got rid of them in 1776. tongue.gif
Shiri2006-01-27 00:30:42
Poor, poor wayward children.

See, Aussies at least mostly speak properly still.

Waaay to many adverbs there, kiddo. As for speaking properly, have you seen that list of Australian slang? Need I mention box smashing? tongue.gif

(Yes, I am aware that Shiri is older than me.)
Shiri2006-01-27 00:47:55
Hey, it's a legal sentence!

And what I mean is, they SPELL things with the necessary "u"s in, and stuff.

I mean, they have a few (hundred) extra words as well but at least the ones they have they get right!

AND they drive on the correct side of the road. angry.gif (I think.)

EDIT: Okay, I see him reading this topic, and yes I KNOW Murphy can't spell or anything, but he's the exception rather than the rule. tongue.gif

EDIT: And you're younger than me. No "kiddo"s out of you, girl.
Arix2006-01-27 00:49:11
Please don't mention box-smashing, Vix
Murphy2006-01-27 00:50:13
uhhh i'm soooo hungover, Australia day was yesterday for us here.

I had a barbeque, and got very drunk with my mates it was great, I did get a few good new words from an email i received,

Words for 2006 -
Swampdonkey - an unattractive girl
BOBFOC - Body off Baywatch, Face of Crimewatch - descibes a girl (or guy) with a good body and a bad face.

My favourtite, Greyhound - descirbes a very short skirt because it's an inch from the hare.

I don't remember most of my Australia Day. SOMEONE made me drink 3 bottles of wine without eating dinner. Tsk tsk, stupid brain.
Thaemorn2006-01-27 01:51:32
Murphy - There's always the the AFD rule. (allow for distance) biggrin.gif

My Australia day was fine.. then I got home, balanced a half-bottle of rum on the bench while I did something.. then it fell off and smashed.

My garage still smells like rum. And, incidentally, is still a garden of broken glass.
